Kondo Misaka

Kondo Misaka (近藤貞花) is a Lily who attends Yurigaoka Girls' Academy. She is the captain of Legion Sanngriðr. Her Schutzengel is Murakami Tokiwa. Her Schild is Kurokawa Nady Hanna.

Known as the Uncontrollable Lily, Misaka is the most popular Lily among the younger Yurigaoka students. She prefers using sword-type CHARMs[8].

Misaka is the main protagonist of the Assault Lily Wunder novel, and a significant amount of it is written from her perspective. She also plays a key role in the Assault Lily New Chapter stage plays, starting with At the Seeds' Frontier / When the Bugle Blooms.

Misaka's Childhood[edit | edit source]

When she was a little girl, Misaka was a huge fan of Shirai Yuyu's older sister, Shirai Saaya. She dreamed of being a Lily just like Saaya and becoming one of Yurigaoka's student council presidents.

After entering Yurigaoka and showing her talent for dueling, she was praised as a genius. This earned her approval from the members of the Dueling Generation such as Izue Shinobu. They even said that Misaka would be the future Brynhildr, and she came to believe it as well.

Starting in kindergarten, Misaka made three close friends: Totori, Homare, and Chihiro[9]. They swore an oath to fight together as a legion<[10]. Then, in the midst of a certain battle, Chihiro died in combat. Much later, when Legion Sanngriðr officially formed, they registered Chihiro as one of their members, even though she was long dead by then.

Misaka's dream of being the Brynhildr was crushed when Yurigaoka changed its tactical focus away from dueling. With the rise of the Neunwelt Generation, having a rare skill became a requirement to be a top-class Lily[9]. Misaka was slow to awaken her rare skill, and some saw her as a failure due to that. Among all her friends, Touka stayed by her side and encouraged her the most through those days. In return, Misaka still feels a sense of duty to stay with and support Touka[7].

Murakami Tokiwa was another Lily who paid no heed to to the criticism Misaka was receiving, and supported her wholeheartedly as the girl continued to devote herself to training. After entering high school, Misaka took the Schutzengel's Oath with Tokiwa and became her Schild[11].

Her own experience as a young Lily may be the reason why Misaka was so attentive to the girl who would later become her Schild, Hanna, who was also slow to awaken her rare skill and went unappreciated by the Garden and her peers[12].

It was difficult for Misaka and her friends to get approval to form Legion Sanngriðr, in large part due to Misaka being the captain. However, her friends insisted that Misaka should be captain of the legion[13].

The Odaiba Counteroffensive[edit | edit source]

Before the Odaiba Counteroffensive, Misaka wasn't thought of by anyone as a Lily of particular note[14]. As one of the Lilies present on Odaiba for the Neunwelt Tactic Technical Conference when the nameless Ultra attacked, she fought as part of the Second Division.

Early in the battle, the winning strategy the Lilies had devised fell apart when the Fifth Division overextended themselves, allowing the Huge to surge forth into areas where the evacuation hadn't finished. As a consequence of that, some junior high school Lilies from Odaiba Girls' School were confronted by a horde of Huge lead by a gigant-type.

The young Lilies called for help, and Misaka, who was just then returning from a solo mission and happened to be nearby, went to their aid without a moment's hesitation. She radioed for the others in the Second Division to join her when they could, then—in order to buy time and protect the junior high school Lilies behind her—took up position on Nozomi Bridge and, for over twenty minutes, fought the horde and the gigant-type entirely on her own[15].

Misaka survived against these impossible odds despite not having any identified Rare Skill at the time[16], and not being a Boosted Lily[17]. When her friends made it to the bridge, they executed the Neunwelt Tactic together, with Misaka herself landing the finish shot and killing the gigant-type.

Because of the duel Misaka had fought, the Lilies were able to hold the line of battle and fight their way to the end of the Odaiba Counteroffensive without a single fatality. Misaka's overwhelming popularity among both the students of Odaiba Girls' School, and first-year Lilies in general, owes itself to the stories told about her duel on Nozomi Bridge—one that could easily have ended in her own death[11].

Because of its members' achievements during the Odaiba Counteroffensive, Legion Sanngriðr was finally recognized as an official legion. But back then, it was rare that they were allowed to take part in expeditions, and they were instead usually given the menial (from Sanngriðr's point of view) task of defending Yurigaoka itself[7].

Garden Defensive Duty[edit | edit source]

Yurigaoka's "Medal of the Holy White Lily" is normally given to legions after they defeat a gigant-type Huge as proof of their strength, and grants them the right to go on expeditions. But even though Legion Sanngrithr started killing gigants right after they formed, and went on to accomplish other remarkable martial feats, they weren't given this medal or allowed to go on expeditions. Instead, they were assigned to support Legion Schwertleite in defending the vicinity of the Garden.

As they carried out their duty of defending Yurigaoka, Sanngrithr often left the locations they'd been dispatched to in order to destroy Nests and kill Huge. This habit of seeking out new battles to fight without permission lead to them being nicknamed "The Uncontrollable Legion." Though they were often censured because of this, they gave excuses like "It was an emergency, so we destroyed that Nest" and "The battlefield was in total chaos, you see?" so often that others could predict what they would say beforehand. These excuses were usually invented by Tokiwa, while Misaka was the one who said them[18].

Misaka didn't approve of the punishment that the student council inflicted on Takegoshi Chihana after the First Defense of Oiso, and has been critical of them ever since. Many Lily Otaku suspect that Sanngriðr's defiant attitude towards the student council is one of the reasons they weren't awarded the Medal of the Holy White Lily for so long. Even after they were given the legion rating of SSS thanks to the many Nests and Huge they had destroyed by ignoring their dispatch orders, they still weren't permitted to go on expeditions[11].

Touka's Recovery[edit | edit source]

During the First Defense of Oiso, Hasebe Touka fell into a vegetative state as a result of using an experimental fourth-generation CHARM, and was hospitalized for several months. When she woke up again, she discovered that the legion she had been a member of, Legion Álfheimr, had disbanded. The former captain of Álfheimr and Touka's dearest friend, Takegoshi Chihana, had entered a new legion by the name of Legion Lohengrin.

But then, Touka found out that the position in which she was most talented—the right-side BZ—in Legion Lohengrin was already occupied by a Lily she had long had an inferiority complex to, Sakaizawa Naru. Heartbroken, she refused to join Lohengrin even when Chihana visited her and invited her to the legion personally.

Misaka visited Touka afterwards to try and comfort her. "Ever since we fought side by side at the Odaiba Counteroffensive, I wanted to stay with you, forever," she said. "I know you're all alone right now... Maybe you could help me fix that? As a Lily, and as a person, I love you, Touka."

Upon hearing this, Touka burst into tears, and Misaka took Touka into her arms. "You are always, always in my heart, Touka," she told Touka. "I swear it on my blade."

Misaka and Touka then took the Roommate's Oath together, and Touka joined Misaka's legion, Legion Sanngriðr[19].

The Award Ceremony[edit | edit source]

The members of the acting Ortlinde's executive committee thought highly of Touka. After she had joined Sanngriðr, and they had fought a couple more battles in which they mostly killed mid-types, the legion was abruptly awarded the Medal of the Holy White Lily. By then, most people were convinced that the student council had been punishing Sanngriðr for their disobedience by not awarding them the medal, but Misaka accepted the honor nonetheless.

When the Medal of the Holy White Lily is bestowed upon a legion, a ceremony is held in which it's given to the legion's captain. The moment that the medal was pinned on her by Takeda Mimi[20], Misaka tore it off and flung it away. "What's this medal even for? Are you trying to tell us ‘You'll get medals if you do as the student council says?'" she remarked with a fearless grin, then walked off the stage and left.

The student council came down on Misaka like a ton of bricks over this, but a lot of first-year Lilies quietly approved of what she'd done. "Go, go, Misaka-sama! That's our Uncontrollable Lily!" they said[11]. The Yurigaoka chairwoman, Takamatsu Shiera, also approved of Misaka's behavior[21].

Combat Style[edit | edit source]

Misaka prefers to fight the Huge in close quarters[22]. Between Misaka's remarkable physical abilities and her excellent swordsmanship, it's easy to understand why she's such an amazing duelist. When she takes part in the Neunwelt Tactic, she's a versatile AZ Lily who can land finish shots from even the trickiest angles.

Her experience fighting together with Tsukioka Momiji in the Odaiba Counteroffensive only made her better at holding the top position on the front lines. While it took a very long time for her to be recognized, Misaka's started attracting attention at Yurigaoka as a Lily who's foreshadowed the latest trends in AZ fighting[11].

Futagawa Fumi considers Misaka to be the Lily with the flashiest fighting style[23].

Misaka has several unique CHARMs, the most famous being the Sohaya-no-Tsurugi[24].

  • Her favorite food is steak[7].
    • Misaka's favorite cut of steak is rump (AKA sirloin)[25].
    • She likes her steak cooked to medium rare or medium[26].
  • Her hobbies are sports, dueling, and camping, while the thing she enjoys the least is studying[7].
    • Misaka is particularly bad at math and science, and better at subjects that only need memorization[27].
    • When Misaka needs help with studying, she will ask Tokiwa or Totori[28].
  • She is as good a cook as Hasebe Touka is, for certain kinds of dishes[29].
  • Among famous people in history, Misaka admires Alexander the Great[30].
  • Misaka is one of the Lilies who receives the most Valentines' Day chocolate in Yurigaoka[31]. As well as from younger girls at Yurigaoka, she gets chocolate from the Lilies from Odaiba that she saved during the Odaiba Counteroffensive[32].
    • This makes Touka very jealous, even though she also gets a lot of chocolate[33].

Plagiarism issue[edit | edit source]

In November 2018, when Azone announced Legion Sanngriðr at the AK-GARDEN 15 convention, fans quickly noticed that Misaka's character design was very similar to Ranun, a character from CAVE's game Gothic wa Mahou Otome. The red and white uniform also worn by Totori, Hibari, and Luise fell under suspicion of being plagiarized as well. Azone decided to not use the problematic character designs again in the future.

Because of this, whenever the official @assault_lily Twitter answered any questions regarding Sanngriðr and its members prior to February 2023, Fumi used a picture of Totori, Hibari, and Luise's cameo in Assault Lily: Bouquet, in which they are all wearing the standard Yurigaoka uniform. She never posted Misaka's original artwork, and instead used Tokiwa and Hanna's pictures as a stand-in.

On February 1st, 2023, Rampage announced that the upcoming Assault Lily Pop-Up Store would sell goods featuring Misaka's artwork[34]. After that, the "Azone Hobby Department" Twitter account posted a new character design for Misaka, redrawn by Gochisousama, a well-known Assault Lily fanartist[35]. The official Twitter account now posts the new artwork when discussing Misaka.
