I don't know your name, miss. But I know you are my inspiration.
I want to be like you. You, who kept reaching out for others until the end. You, who cried for me.
To be like you…!
To protect everyone, and everything to the very end! As a Shieldmaiden!—Aizawa Kazuha, Rebellion of Skjaldmær, scene 5-4
Aizawa Kazuha is chosen by Herensuge as this year's Rank 1 Lily, making her captain of their top legion, Hervör. She immediately causes a stir by publicly announcing that she is opposed to Herensuge's view that their Madecs and Lilies should lay down their lives, without question, if ordered to do so. Kazuha selects Iijima Renka, Hatsukano Yo, Serizawa Chikaru and Sasaki Ran to be members of Hervör; they struggle to grow used to Kazuha's rigorous training and her lofty ideals.
Some early successes bolster Hervör's spirits, but on a day off, they find themselves fighting an unexpected battle against overwhelming odds. Kazuha orders the rest of the legion to protect civilians while she holds off three large-types on her own. She is soon overwhelmed, but Yo disobeys orders and comes to fight with her, resulting in Yo being grievously wounded and falling into a coma. Heartbroken, Renka blames Kazuha for what happened to Yo.
Yo eventually recovers, but Kazuha is unable to regain her confidence, even as the Huge attack Herensuge itself and Hervör is ordered into combat. Amidst the fight, Kazuha remembers the Madec who saved her life and inspired her long ago, and vows that she will once again strive to protect everyone and everything. Hervör performs a Neunwelt to defeat a powerful enemy, winning the battle. Afterwards, the five Lilies swear an oath that they will forever fight together as Shieldmaidens.
Main Story, Chapter 1
[edit | edit source]I'm probably a much more immature leader than you are, Kazuha-san. No, even as a Lily, I still lack both the strength and the experience I need.
But, there are people who support me and push me forward. The strength they give me is what makes me strong!
That's why, Kazuha-san... Even though we belong to different legions, I want to be a source of strength for you. In return, if you would lend me your strength as well... it would make me very happy!—Hitotsuyanagi Riri, Legions, Assemble, scene 8-2
Team Hitotsuyanagi is assigned a mission to rescue an expedition of Lilies from Herensuge Girls' Academy. During the operation, they encounter LG Hervör, who had defied Herensuge High Command to launch their own rescue effort. The two legions join forces against a mutated HUGE, but despite their cooperation, the HUGE manages to escape. Later, while preparing for the Yurigaoka Green Fair, they befriend LG Gran Eple from Kamba Girls' High School for the Fine Arts. Determined to eliminate the threat, Mashima Moyu organizes joint training among the three legions, which ultimately leads to a successful extermination of the forementioned mutated HUGE.
In recognition of their victory, the three legions are invited to the West Tokyo Defense Plan Conference several weeks later. Team Hitotsuyanagi uses their downtime to explore Herensuge and Kamba alongside local Lilies. However, while the groups are separated, the Area Defense around Shinjuku suddenly collapses. Rushing to regroup, the Lilies battle HUGE and rescue civilians along the way. Once reunited, they reorganized into legions, then divide into three routes to intercept three newly reported mutated HUGEs. Although Team Hitotsuyanagi does not locate their initial target, they link up with LG Hervör to destroy one of the mutated HUGEs before rushing to assist LG Gran Eple in their ongoing battle.
Don't you dare say this is the "end," okay? Because after this, Gran Eple's... no, our battle will continue.
...This time, I will protect everyone. Takane-chan... and all of my precious comrades...
Everyone, lend me your strength! As Gran Eple, we are going to take this enemy down...!!—Kon Kanaho, Incubating Catastrophe, scene 1-6
LG Gran Eple engages one of the three mutated HUGEs during their combat, quickly discovering its ability to adapt and learn from their attacks. Although the legion manages to strike the creature down using feints, the HUGE summons reinforcements before expiring. A second HUGE of the same type arrives and consumes its fallen comrade, merging into a Large-class in size but with superior firepower and intelligence. Gran Eple attempts a Neunwelt tactic, but the attack is neutralized by a Magi-Reflector, leaving the Legion in a desperate position.
As they struggle to secure a retreat route, Team Hitotsuyanagi and LG Hervör arrive to provide reinforcements. Futagawa Fumi suggests utilizing wave attacks to prevent the creature from adapting to their patterns. Overwhelmed by the assault, the heavily damaged HUGE retreats to the top of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building, encasing itself in a protective cocoon.
To destroy the cocoon before the HUGE can finish incubating, the three legions execute a Neunwelt tactic. However, the Magisphere remains hindered by the Magi-Reflector just as the HUGE completes its metamorphosis. Faced with this crisis, Hitotsuyanagi Riri activates her Rare Skill, Charisma, to maintain the battle; The skill's output reaches an abnormal level. However, a powerful beam from the HUGE interrupts the fight before it can be decided, leaving the battlefield in total chaos.
Team Hitotsuyanagi, Hervör, and Gran Eple. The strength of our three legions has united as one...
This is Laplace... the Rare Skill that creates miracles!
It's a power meant to connect me with the precious people I trust... with all of you. By turning our feelings into strength, we will move forward into the future!—Hitotsuyanagi Riri, Our Bonds a Bullet Leading to the Future, scene 3-3
Members of Team Hitotsuyanagi, LG Hervör, and LG Gran Eple gradually awaken in the hospital. While some immediately return to the frontline, the forces convene once Hitotsuyanagi Riri regains consciousness to formulate a strategy against Evolve—the official designation for the mutated HUGE occupying the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. They resolve to execute an unprecedented Neunwelt tactic utilizing all 19 Lilies across the three legions, pinning their hopes on Riri awakening the power of Laplace.
The Lilies march on the building via the most direct route, supported along the way by inspired Herensuge Lilies. Just as they arrive, Evolve fires another devastating beam, destroying the area around Shinjuku Station and obliterating the frontline command. High Command orders an immediate retreat. With another blast imminent and the legions in grave danger, Riri deliberately activates her Rare Skill.
Recalling a past discussion among the three legion captains about their duty to protect, Riri resolves to stand her ground and defend everyone. This unwavering determination successfully triggers Laplace. Empowered by Riri's awakening, the 19-Lily Neunwelt tactic begins. Channeling the combined feelings and Magi of every participant, the three captains deliver a synchronized Finish Shot, finally bringing the battle to an end.
Half a month later, an official assessment of Riri's Rare Skill concludes with no confirmed signs of Laplace. Despite the lingering mystery, the three Legions reunite at the hot springs of Yurigaoka, reaffirming their shared bonds and resolution.
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- Hervör is the name of two mythical shieldmaidens described in the Hervarar saga; there is also a valkyrie by the same name. The name means "army-guardian."
- Herverar is the same word in genitive case (equivalent to the English "of Hervor".)
- While Herensuge and its legions are generally themed after Basque myth, Hervör name is based on Nordic myth. This goes back to the era before Auñamendi System came into the Garden's management. Before that, Herensuge is Nordic themed, and this is also reflected in the Shieldmaiden tradition that still persist there[2].
- All the members of Hervör are Boosted Lilies except for Renka, who is a normal Lily with an aberration.
