Legion Ironside (LGアイアンサイド) is a Legion of Ludvico Private Girls' Academy. The first ever independent Legion to be formed in the Garden, Legion Ironside arose as an offshoot of their Top Legion, the Temple Legion, in an act of rebellion against Ludvico's administration due to their close affiliations with GEHENA.
History[edit | edit source]
The idea of Legion Ironside was first conceived by Kishimoto Maria Mirai, the captain of the Temple Legion during the height of the Duelist era. As opposed to always acting under the will of the Garden, Mirai aspired to create a Legion that was truly her own, hoping to be joined by her Schwester Fukuyama Jeanne Sachie, her younger sister Kishimoto Lucia Raimu and her childhood friend Amamiya Sophia Seren, as well as her closest colleagues in the Temple Legion, Nosaka Jacqueline Kazane, Takatori Natalie Towa and Li Christina Susu.
However, Mirai and Kazane tragically died before they could bring this ideal to fruition, and so, the Temple Legion remained the single active Legion in Ludvico following her death, with Sachie, Raimu and Seren coming to integrate it. Nonetheless, the now third year Towa held onto the idea of creating a Legion apart from the Temple Legion, wishing to honor Mirai's legacy. At the same time, Sachie came to learn that prior to her death, Mirai had been forcefully made into a Boosted Lily, causing her to grow distrustful of Ludvico's administration due to their presumed compliance with GEHENA's experiments.
Ironside's formation[edit | edit source]

Sachie's unease was greatly amplified when the Temple Legion eventually encountered a resurrected Mirai in one of their missions, who was subsequently killed by her own sister, Raimu, after mindlessly attacking the Lilies as a result of the multiple Boosting experiments she endured. Upon learning of this, Towa told Sachie of Mirai's old dream of creating a Legion of their own apart from the Temple Legion. Though initially unsure, Sachie's distrust of Ludvico reached its tipping point after the Temple Legion's current captain, Ichinomiya Michaela Himari was suddenly ambushed by a Cave that was not reported to the Garden. Immediately after the battle that ensued, Sachie publicly declared that she would no longer be a part of the Temple Legion, not wishing to submit to the Garden's orders any longer.
With Sachie, Raimu, Seren, Towa, Susu, Seto Veronica Ichika and Saeki Julia Karen as their initial members, Sachie gave their brand new Legion the title of "Ironside". Similar to the Temple Legion, they also wore a unique jacket, theirs being black in color, and brandishing a white rose as its insignia, denoted by Sachie to symbolize their resolve "to not be consumed by the darkness that surrounds them". In their very first battle, they were joined by Kuroki Francisca Yuria, who hoped that in their freedom as an independent Legion, they could always come to the Temple Legion's aid whenever needed.
Despite the express disapproval of its existence by Ludvico's administration, Legion Ironside continued to operate regardless. However, as a result of their creation, the Temple Legion no longer possessed the required nine members in order to perform the Neunwelt Tactic, which greatly impacted their effectiveness in battle. And as Ironside themselves were still short of nine members, they could only provide support to the Temple Legion during combat. During this period, Ironside's members continued to investigate Ludvico's connections with GEHENA, leading them to conflict directly with the Garden's pro-GEHENA Instructors.
The fall of Ludvico[edit | edit source]

The increasing tensions between Ludvico and its Lilies eventually came to a head when GEHENA deployed a Gigant-class Huge directly within the Garden's premises, with their primary goal being the retrieval of Kishimoto Lucia Raimu due to her unique abilities as a born Boosted Lily. After the Lilies of both Ironside and the Temple Legion alike refuse to comply with their demands, Instructors Makabe Melania Sayoko and Toride Suzanne Reika disable the protective barrier surrounding Ludvico, causing a Great Cave to form directly atop the Garden's campus, and allowing the Huge to directly attack its facilities.
The two Legions resist GEHENA's assault, with Ironside battling the two Instructors while the Temple Legion tasked themselves with ensuring the safe evacuation of the Garden's Lilies. However, despite the two Legions ultimately succeeding in their endeavors, the Huge's attack caused severe structural damage to Ludvico's facilities, while simultaneously allowing the Irregular Huge held as test subjects in GEHENA's Ludvico Labs to break free. Furthermore, many of Ludvico's Instructors died in this battle, and the Garden's administration completely fell apart. As a result, Ludvico essentially lost its ability to properly function as a Garden.
Because of this, the Temple Legion was no longer able to operate in any official capacity, as they could no longer have any members appointed to integrate it.[1] As such, Legion Ironside, now joined by Matsunaga Brigitta Kayo and Hasegawa Gabriella Tsugumi, took on their role as the Ludvico's representative Legion, leading the defensive efforts against the swarms of Huge now freely roaming their National Defense Lines, while also being at the forefront of Ludvico's collaborations with the other Legions sent out by nearby Gardens to cover their territory.
By the time of the Izu Oshima Nest Survey, Legion Ironside remains as Ludvico's acting flagship Legion, as though Ludvico is said to have regained its operating capabilities by the time of this Expedition, the Temple Legion's current status remains unknown.
Combat Style[edit | edit source]
Legion Ironside is noted to adopt battle strategies similar to Yurigaoka Girls' Academy's Legion Schwarz Grail,[2] who are known for the high degree of tactical knowledge displayed by each of its members, making them a greatly combat-oriented, yet strictly logical Legion.[3] Sachie simultaneously acts as their captain and tactical coach.[4] Their Regista user, Karen, plays a pivotal role in maintaining Ironside's formation, as her high versatility allows them to fight with two Lilies in the BZ position, something that otherwise would be incredibly difficult for a Regista user to manage.[5]
As opposed to the Temple Legion's 3x3x3, Ironside instead makes use of a 3x4x2 formation, noted to favor aggressiveness in combat. In general, they adopt the "gallant and freeform" fighting style that Sachie is famed for,[6] a direct inheritance of Mirai's relentless and Duel-centered fighting style. Himari describes this approach to combat as one that "allows for the Lilies to express their individuality", making it possible for them to make decisions individually and alter their formation to better adapt to the changes in the battlefield.[7]
Relationships[edit | edit source]
As the two flagship Legions of Ludvico, Ironside and the Temple Legion frequently deploy to the battlefield together, and have worked in complete unison on multiple occasions. Ironside has also developed a close working relationship with many of the Legions deployed to cover Ludvico's National Defense Lines following the Garden's collapse, these include Team Hitotsuyanagi of Yurigaoka, Legions Heorot Saints and Hronesnæsse of Odaiba Girls' School, Legion Hervör of Herensuge Girls' Academy, and, in the anime/game continuity, Legion Gran Eple of Kamba Girls' School for the Fine Arts.
Members[edit | edit source]
-
Fukuyama Jeanne Sachie (captain)
Notes[edit | edit source]
- In Assault Lily: Lost Memories, when Serizawa Chikaru informs Sachie that she will provide her cover with her Heliosphere, Sachie tells her that she is "incredibly reliable, just like our vice-captain". This possibly refers to Ichika, implying that she is Legion Ironside's vice-captain
