Legion Sanngriðr
Legion Sanngriðr (LGサングリーズル) is a legion at Yurigaoka Girls' Academy.
They are known as the Uncontrollable Legion because they often skirt on overstepping their orders. While the legion wont go as far as sortieing without permission, they would often move to another battle, or destroying other Nest under their own discretion while returning from expedition, claiming it's emergency. Homare even ask back what's the problem because they got the enemy's head[7].
When that happened, usually their captain got sent to the punishment room[8]. In most case though, they only got grounded from sortieing thanks to Tokiwa's political influence towards the student council[9].
History[edit | edit source]
The legion begins as a promise between Misaka, Totori, Homare[10], and Chihiro[11] to fight together. But because of Misaka's reputation, they faced difficulties in receiving approval to form a legion[12]. On top of it, Misaka's unidentified rare skill is also a factor[13].
Sanngriðr was finally approved as a legion after the Odaiba Counteroffensive. In addition to Misaka and the other members' remarkable accomplishments during the Counteroffensive, Tokiwa's announcement that "From now on, I do not intend to sortie with any legion other than Sanngriðr" was a major factor. Tokiwa was one of the strongest Lilies in her year and Yurigaoka did not want to lose the ability to deploy her to the battlefield[14]. When they were approved, Sanngriðr had only 7 members: Misaka, Hanna, Homare, Seira, Tokiwa, Tomoyo, and Totori[15].
Back then, three of those members (Hanna, Tomoyo, Seira) were still in middle school, and could not officially become members of the legion yet. To meet the minimum of 9 members, Tokiwa asked for help from Noda Ameri, leader of the Labyrinth at that time. Five members of the unofficial Legion Ginnungagap were registered as members of Sanngriðr and they even took part in missions together.[6]
Defensive Legion Era and Yurigaoka Medal Incident[edit | edit source]
After the legion is officially recognized, despite having members with very high aptitude for offensive moves, Sanngriðr are assigned to Garden defense duties, which means they are only sent to battles in Yurigaoka's nationally assigned defensive perimeter. Even as accompanying legion, they only have few chance to accompany other legion in expedition, which chance they use to do side missions such as exterminating nearby Nests. As result, the members are frustrated.
Their work also went unrewarded. Despite them deliberately taking their own course to take down many Gigant class and already ranked SSS, they are never awarded with the St. Yurigaoka Medal.
The frustration peaked when the newly formed Legion Ráðgríðr is awarded just because they finished a Gigant class who had been weakened by Álfheimr[16]. Homare made cynical remark about favouritism in the awarding process. This opinion is shared by other lilies, and even Okada Kisara (head of the Disciplinary Committee at that time) asks for more transparency in the awarding process.
In reality, the only person who is highly against giving the medal is Takeda Mimi. Even Izue Shinobu, the Brunhilde, vouches that it’s just matter of time until Sanngriðr became one of the core part of Yurigaoka's expedition legions.
After Touka recovered, and joined Sanngriðr, they are finally being rewarded for just finishing 1 or 2 battles with only middle class Huge. The official reason cites consideration to the legion's past exploits, but this only fuels more suspicion about favouritism because Touka is known to be liked by the deputy Ortlinde faction.
At the end of the awarding ceremony, which the medal is given by Mimi as representative of the student council, Misaka took off the medal and asks Mimi, what is this? So you want to tell us we will be rewarded if we would just quietly obey the Student Council?
then throw away the medal before walking out.
This act is criticized by the student council, but it gains applause from many first year Lilies. Student Council also didn't cancel the award because of Kisara's statement, saying it is healthier for Yurigaoka to have legion who can speak up against the Student Council.
Chugoku Expedition[edit | edit source]
The battle against Huge in the Chugoku region has forced territory between Kyushu and Hyogo to be evacuated[17].
Morishita Miyabi, student council president of Ambrosia, one of the main Garden fighting to recapture the Chugoku region, sent her request for support to Chihana and Rosalinde from Yurigaoka. Since both are ex-Sigrún, the push for sending support is strong among the Sigrún faction of the student council[18].
Because Álfheimr has just returned from the Niigata Expedition, the task then falls to Sanngriðr who is also an SSS-rank legion[19].
Battle style[edit | edit source]
In the legion's tendency chart, Sanngriðr, like Hronesnæsse, are categorized as highly intuitive and aggressive.
Like many top legions with ex-Alfheim members in Yurigaoka, Sanngriðr employs the variable formation, where all members can change their position and function as needed. This is mainly thanks to Touka who previously act as deputy for Chihana[20]. Touka's addition also allows Homare to fully utilize her offensive strength[21].
Because they have two Regista (Hibari and Luise), Sanngriðr can apply Double Regista tactic where they have two commanders[22].
Relationship[edit | edit source]
- Sanngriðr has an alliance with other top legions, such as Álfheimr[23], Reginleif, and Lohengrin[24].
- They also have alliance with Ginnungagap, although that legion is not officially recognized by Yurigaoka[25].
- Like many other top legions, they have bad relationship with Eir.
- For their history of disobedience, they also have bad relationship with the student council legions, especially Brynhildr Line.
- Outside Yurigaoka, they have also cooperate with 1st Air Cavalry Platoon Michael from St. Mercurius International School during expedition to Chugoku region[26].
- They often fight alongside Saints[27].
- Because all the 2nd year members also took part in the Odaiba Counteroffensive, they have good relationship with other lilies who are also member of the task forces, especially the 2nd and 4th.
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Sanngriðr (pronounced approximately 'Sangrith') is the name of a valkyrie, and means either "very violent" or "swift stroke" in Old Norse.
- The legion often held barbeque party[28].
- Despite Misaka being the captain, Tokiwa was chosen to represent the legion in the 13 Legions Meeting because the Student Council took her opinion more seriously[29].
- According to the novelization author, if it was Misaka who participate in the meeting, it would have been Sanngriðr who accompanied Álfheimr to Niigata instead of Odaiba's legion. Or, they might have become the legion sent from Yurigaoka instead of Álfheimr[30].
- Yamaguchi Chihiro, despite already fallen in battle years before the legion is formed, is still listed as a member.
- Sanngriðr's gunship is named Sessrúmnir[31]. It is faster than typical gunships[32].
- Sanngriðr's legion colors are black and red[33].
Legion room[edit | edit source]
In Yurigaoka, legions are allocated with a room they can decorate as they please. In Sanngriðr, the members all have strong individual character, and nobody to coordinate the interior, so the room is chaotic from the objects each of them brings in[34]. This habit is started by the first year members (Tomoyo, Luise, Hanna)[35].
Some of the known items inside are:
- Kotatsu[36]
- Mahjong table[37]
- Replica of Bocca della Verità (brought by Luise)[38]
- A big porcelain tanuki figure (brought by Hanna)[39]
- Suit of armour (brought by Tomoyo)[40]
- Bonsai (brought by Touka)[41]
- Poster of documentary movie about outsider artist (brought by Hibari)[42]
- Exercise equipment (brought by Totori)[43]
- Sword with name that sounds like Tanuki (brought by Misaka)[44]
- Chandelier for room lighting (brought by Tokiwa). Said to be the most normal compared to the other[45].
- A "genuine spirit sword" (brought by Homare)[46].
- A very big mirror and many anime blu-ray discs (brought by Seira).
- A very expensive lantern (brought by Toa)[47]
- Expensive notebook computer (brought by Maho)[48]
The legion members are thinking of putting a support robot in the room, but haven't agreed on which type[49].
Plagiarism issue[edit | edit source]
Legion Sanngriðr was introduced in AK-Garden 15 event (2018-11-25) as part of the Mashima Moyu's CHARM Workshop, a serialization in Dengeki Hobby website[50]. Later, there are suspicion about plagiarism with character design of Kondo Misaka, as well as costume of other legion members. To avoid further problem, Azone canned the project.
A new project, featuring Hronesnæsse, became the successor of the web serialization, as well as using the CHARM design previously made for this project.
The Assault Lily: Bouquet anime featured cameo from many minor characters. Episode 8 especially gives cameo for the characters from Sanngriðr. Because the characters in anime are wearing standard Yurigaoka uniform that are not subject to the plagiarism issue, Fumi used screenshots of these cameo when making explanation related to the characters and legion. She also posted artwork of Hanna and Tokiwa when answering questions about Misaka, who did not appear in the anime at all.
in 2023, all of the Sanngriðr characters with problematic character designs received brand-new artwork, and Fumi now tweets this artwork instead of the anime screenshots when answering questions about them.
