Matsunaga Brigitta Kayo

From Assault Lily Wiki

Matsunaga Brigitta Kayo (松永・ブリジッタ・佳世) is a second year Lily who attends Ludvico Private Girls' Academy. She is a member of Legion Ironside, and formerly a member of the Garden's Top Legion, the Temple Legion. Kayo is the Schwester of Hasegawa Gabriella Tsugumi, and is a major character of the Ludvico series of stage plays.

Personality

[edit | edit source]

Kayo is usually a socially awkward and oftentimes recluse individual, notoriously assuming a hunched position when walking, and always speaking with a strong stutter. A self described "Lily Nerd" (リリィオタク), she is knowledgeable in all matters pertaining to Lilies, and will become highly ecstatic whenever discussing the topic. Likewise, Kayo is also interested in traditional geek culture, such as games, manga and anime, even attributing her desire to become a Lily to an anime series called "Magical Lily".

While she'll become relatively more energetic when talking about the things she likes, Kayo's personality changes completely whenever she's under the influence of her Rare Skill, Lunatic Trancer, as not only she becomes highly aggressive, to the point of being uncontrollable, but her speech and mannerisms will become equally unrestrained. She'll abandon her usually polite speech and instead assume a vulgar and overconfident tone, filled with swear words. Likewise, her meek and unassuming body language gives way to a wide and completely unreserved fighting stance. Kayo's combat approach can be described as nigh-barbaric, as she shows a particular preference to brutally maiming the Huge in close-quarters combat, which often drives her to carelessly dash to the very front lines.

Perhaps surprisingly, Kayo appears to be highly averse to taking risks while in her normal state, and will easily panic if placed in a disadvantageous position during combat. She retains this trait outside of battle, coming off as overly cautious, and often serving as the voice of reason to the more adventurous types such as Sano Matilda Kokoro. Kayo is also greatly against dishonesty, being unable to keep important secrets from her close friends when she feels they need to know them, and when offered to join the rebel Legion Ironside, she appeared to genuinely grapple with her own moral integrity, as her desire to be a member of the Temple Legion was put at odds with her drive to stand for what she believed to be just.

Kayo is very self-conscious, and appears to not think too highly of herself. She strongly blamed Seto Veronica Ichika's injury on her own reckless behavior, despite her closest friends and even Ichika herself assuring Kayo that she wasn't at fault. When Tsugumi first proposed that they take the Schwester's Oath, Kayo's immediate reaction was to wonder if Tsugumi was in her right mind. She refused to believe that anyone could look at her in admiration, citing multiple of her traits as negative when Tsugumi insisted on her proposal.

History

[edit | edit source]

Kayo was noted to be a fairly unremarkable Lily during her time in middle school.[1] At an unknown point in time, she met and became good friends with Fukuyama Jeanne Sachie, Seto Veronica Ichika and Tachibana Theresia Nagisa, though on the other hand, she appears to be more unfamiliar with Kuroki Francisca Yuria. Kayo also became acquainted with Sano Matilda Kokoro at some point.

League of Gardens

Following a sudden outpour of Huge in Shimokitazawa, Tokyo, Kayo and Sachie are deployed to counter their advance. They are joined by Funada Kiito and Funada Ui of Odaiba Girls' School's Legion Hronesnæsse, as well as Kawamura Yuzuriha and Tsukioka Momiji from Legion Heorot Saints, as they presume a Gigant-class Huge to be present in the area. They learn that Shirai Yuyu of Yurigaoka Girls' Academy had also been deployed to Shimokitazawa, accompanied by a new Legion.

Continuing their advance, the Lilies are also joined by Toda Eulalia Kotohi, a first-year Ludvico Lily, as well as Kon Kanaho of Kamba Girls' School for the Fine Arts and Aizawa Kazuha of Herensuge Girls' Academy. Learning that Yuyu would also be joining them, Kiito expresses her worries, pointing out Yuyu's reputation as a lone, uncontrollable Lily. Sachie and Yuzuriha then tell Kiito how Yuyu's current personality is a result of her traumatic experience during the Koshu Withdrawal, with Kayo adding that Yuyu had avoided using her Lunatic Trancer ever since.

Sachie's team converges with Yuyu's, and they shortly make contact with a Gigant-class Huge. Initially, the multi-legion team task themselves with clearing the Huge in the area as Team Hitotsuyanagi performs the Neunwelt Tactic, but while doing so, they encounter a unique, Large-class Huge, impervious to any attacks. Kayo tells them of how that variation of Huge was reported to only be defeated by the Neunwelt Tactic, and with no other choice, Sachie's team performs their own Neunwelt to destroy it. They later move to regroup with Team Hitotsuyanagi, arriving just in time to see the Gigant-class fleeing the scene, still alive.

After concluding that the Gigant-class Huge was able to survive due to possessing a Magie Reflector, the Legions agree on performing two simultaneous Neunwelts at once, which eventually succeed in destroying the Gigant-class. After the battle, Kayo maintained contact with fellow Lily enthusiast Futagawa Fumi.

Schwester's Prayer

[edit | edit source]

Main article: Assault Lily: Schwester's Prayer

Kayo frantically informs Sachie and Ichika of Ichinomiya Michaela Himari's arrival in Ludvico, having transferred from Irma Girls' High School for the Arts. As a veteran of the Odaiba Counteroffensive, Kayo remarks that Himari is sure to be chosen for the Temple Legion, while Ichika and Sachie tell Kayo that soon enough, she'll undoubtedly be selected as well.

As a second year Lily, Kayo is enlisted to supervise the training of the newly enrolled first-years, being tasked with supervising Narumi Clara Yuko and Saeki Julia Karen together with Yuria. Kayo, however, is unable to restrain herself due to her Lunatic Trancer, and goes on a rampage, destroying the dummy Huge by herself while interrupting the other first years. Briefly stopping her, Yuria advises Clara and Karen not to learn from her example.

At Maria's Hill, Ludvico's cemetery, Kayo approaches Sachie, telling her that she harbors doubts over the death of her Schwester, Kishimoto Maria Mirai. She explains that upon prying on the reports of her death, the details of it are suspiciously vague, merely listing that Mirai "died in combat" and nothing else. Kayo tells Sachie that she has a bad feeling about their current circumstances, but Sachie tells her to simply let it go.

The Garden notifies the appearance of a Cave, and with no orders to assemble the Temple Legion, all Lilies are ordered to deploy into battle. Kayo and the other second years lead the way in fighting against the Huge, and while Kayo unleashes the full might of her Lunatic Trancer, the usually sharp Sachie shows herself unable to fight, eventually finding herself completely defenseless after experiencing a triggering flashback. The group is joined by first years Kishimoto Lucia Raimu and Amamiya Sophia Seren, and under Himari's leadership, they begin a counterattack as they're surrounded by six Large-class Huge. During the battle, Kayo is dumbfounded by the appearance of the famous Arsenal Amatsu Marei of Ryuto Girls' Academy, who joins them in killing the remaining Huge.

Later, Kayo and Kokoro enter a secret room within Ludvico, hoping to uncover more information on Mirai's death. There, they watch Instructors Izumi Rosa Rina and Kosaka Anastasia Ryoko hold a meeting with an unknown party, reporting to them that Himari currently has the highest Skiller Value in the entire Garden. The figures tell the Instructors to carry on "the same procedure done to Mirai", and Kayo identifies them as GEHENA, concluding they must be conducting experiments with Ludvico's students, which Mirai was a victim of. Kayo considers telling Sachie of what she discovered, but Kokoro insists that she don't do it, arguing that Mirai herself likely didn't wish for Sachie to know while she was alive. However, Kayo insists, remarking that Sachie cannot continue to be consumed by her grief like she had been so far.

During Ludvico's Easter Festival, Ludvico receives reports of another Cave, with the Huge all converging at Ludvico's cemetery, Maria's Hill, where Raimu was. Predicting the appearance of a Gigant-class, the Temple Legion is assembled to neutralize it, with Kayo being one of the Lilies chosen. They arrive at Maria's Hill just as the Gigant-class makes its appearance, and so, they promptly begin a Neunwelt Tactic. During her turn with the Magisphere, Kayo's frustrations are heightened by her Lunatic Trancer, and she blurts out to Sachie that the reason Mirai had suddenly disappeared from Ludvico before her death was because she was subjected to a Boosting experiment. Yuria confirms this, explaining that GEHENA targets the Lilies with the highest Skiller Values within Ludvico to make them Boosted Lilies. Finally, at Raimu's request, Seren reveals that Mirai died due to her Magie going out of control, causing her to explode. While in shock at this revelation, Raimu successfully takes the finishing shot and kills the Gigant-class, seemingly awakening to the Rare Skill Shukuchi.

In the aftermath, Kayo, Sachie and Ichika further discuss the circumstances of Mirai's death, with Ichika theorizing that the Boosting procedure likely multiplied the power of her Rare Skill, Phase Transcendence, beyond her control, ultimately causing her demise. Changing the subject, Kayo points out that during their previous battle, she felt much more in touch with her teammates and her own abilities than usual, and wonders if Raimu's Rare Skill really was Shukuchi.

Schwester's Secret

[edit | edit source]

Main article: Assault Lily: Schwester's Secret

As the Temple Legion made their way back to the campus after defeating the Gigant-class, Ichika, Kayo and Kokoro run into Karen, Tsugumi and Haneda Catalina Mei as they fought against a group of remaining Huge in the area. Ichika tells Tsugumi to leave and find them backup, while the remaining Lilies hold out against the Huge. Faced with multiple Large-class Huge, Kokoro urges Karen and Mei to leave, but the pair insists on staying and fighting as well.

Meanwhile, Kayo, under the influence of her Lunatic Trancer, fights in an increasingly erratic manner, continuously disrupting the other Lilies as they attempt to fight the Huge. After Kayo forces her Heliosphere to come undone, Ichika's leg is injured by a stray attack. This, in turn, causes Kayo to stop her rampage and fall into a panic, blaming herself for Ichika's injury. Karen attempts to take the lead in fighting, but is unable to take down one of the Large-class Huge, and as it moves in to attack her, Ichika steps in the way, being severely injured as she uses her body to shield Karen from the attack. Ichika asks that Kayo not blame herself for what happened before falling unconscious, and she is carried by Karen and Mei back to Ludvico while Kokoro defeats the Large-class Huge.

Later, Kayo decides to visit Ichika in the medical bay, but is unable to find the courage to enter her room. She meets Sachie and Nagisa, who had immediately transferred back from Heimskringla Trädgård after learning of Ichika's injury. Kayo tells the pair what happened, once again blaming it on her reckless behavior, but both Sachie and Nagisa assure her there is no reason for her to feel guilty, pointing out that Ichika simply acted the way a Lily should.

As the Lilies are deployed following the appearance of a Cave, Kayo, still unable to let go of her guilt, refuses to activate Lunatic Trancer, fearful that it may cause her other teammates to be hurt. This bothers Himari, who advises her to leave if she doesn't wish to fight, but as the Temple Legion members begin to be appointed, Nagisa brings Kayo along, believing she'll be selected as usual. However, Tsugumi is selected as their final member, prompting Kayo to run away from the battlefield.

After refusing to show up for training for five days, Kayo is visited by Kokoro, who tries to encourage her to return by telling her that as Lilies, it is their duty to continue working their very hardest despite all the pain and hurt they may eventually face. Kokoro cites how her own continuous hard work led her to awakening the Subskill Stealth, leading Kayo to conclude that, if she awakens to a Subskill of her own, then she'll be able to fight without needing to use Lunatic Trancer. Motivated, Kayo sets off to further research Subskills.

Later on, another Cave is reported, and the Temple Legion is assembled to neutralize it. Despite being selected this time, Kayo still doesn't show up, and Himari orders Tsugumi to go find her. She finds Kayo far away from the others, still afraid that her fighting style may cause them to get hurt. Tsugumi reveals that she had always admired Kayo for always fearlessly fighting at the front, pointing out that it motivated her to shake off her own fears and face the battlefield. Kayo, however, does not believe that she could ever be an inspiration to anyone, prompting Tsugumi to offer her Medalha, showing her that she genuinely wishes to fight by her side. Kayo still does not believe someone could ever desire her company, and Tsugumi tells her of how her Rare Skill, Brave, is capable of bringing Lunatic Trancer under control. Kayo gives Tsugumi her own Medalha, and the pair take the Schwester's Oath.

Together with Tsugumi, Kayo returns to the Temple Legion, allowing them to begin a Neunwelt Tactic, however, they are interrupted by the reappearance of a resurrected Mirai, whom the Temple Legion had briefly encountered previously. Appearing completely mindless, Mirai promptly begins fighting the Lilies, and is able to overpower the entire Temple Legion with little issue. Yuria hypothesizes that she had undergone a second Boosting procedure following her presumed death, causing the Huge cells in her body to go out of control and turning her into a quasi-Huge. And so, the Temple Legion members work to restrain Mirai's movements, eventually allowing Raimu to shoot her with the Magisphere.

In the aftermath, Nagisa and Kokoro congratulate Kayo on taking the Schwester's Oath with Tsugumi, pointing out how they are a perfect match in Rare Skills. Kayo then tells the pair of how, in her research into Subskills, she was able to ascertain that Raimu's Rare Skill was not in fact Shukuchi, but instead Charisma, pointing out that Raimu merely possessed Shukuchi's Subskill form, Invisible One. At some point, Kayo would discuss this with Fumi, remarking that she experienced a similar sensation when fighting together with Hitotsuyanagi Riri during the Shimokitazawa Expedition previously, eventually leading Fumi to figure that Riri had awakened to Charisma herself.[2]

White Resistance ~The Promise's Path~

[edit | edit source]

Main article: Assault Lily: White Resistance ~The Promise's Path~

Kayo, Sachie and Nagisa, break the news of Mirai's fate to the third year Lilies Takatori Natalie Towa and Li Christina Susu, Mirai's former Legion mates. Kayo proposes that they join them in training, so that they also integrate the Temple Legion in order to keep close watch on GEHENA, and help in protecting Raimu. However, Towa and Susu refuse, as they suspect that Ludvico themselves may have approved the experiments conducted on Mirai, and they do not wish to take part in a Legion directly run by the Garden. Instead, Towa proposes that they form a new Legion in honor of Mirai’s legacy.

After learning that Instructor Rina had suddenly departed from Ludvico, Kokoro and Kayo once again sneak into the secret conference room, hoping to find information on her current whereabouts. They witness Instructor Ryoko speaking with Instructor Toride Suzanne Reika, who tells her of the importance of Ludvico to GEHENA, as well as the necessity of the experiments they conduct. After the Instructors leave, Kokoro begins to rummage through their computers for information on Rina, however, they are swiftly interrupted by Instructor Makabe Melania Sayoko, who agrees to let them go free in exchange for "becoming friends" with her. Later, Kayo surmises that Reika’s words imply that Ludvico was directly complicit in the Boosting experiments conducted on Mirai and Yuria, and that they are still attempting to conduct more.

Kayo immediately sets off to find Himari, as she is likely their primary target for a next text subject due to being the Lily with the highest Skiller Value in the Garden. She finds her away from the Garden facilities, training Hanaoka Angela Moe, and briefs her on the danger she faces. Himari responds that she is aware, and has taken necessary precautions, but as they begin to make their way back to the Garden, they are suddenly ambushed by a Cave. Kayo leaves to retrieve her CHARM and call for backup, and upon returning with the other members of the Temple Legion, they find Yuria, working to draw the Huge away from Himari and Moe while they make their escape. Nagisa stays behind while the remaining Lilies move out to regroup with Himari.

Reaching the pair, the Temple Legion members are immediately surrounded by Huge, which they have an increasingly harder time pushing back against. After Himari is knocked down, Moe falls into a panic, causing her to awaken to the Rare Skill Phantasm, allowing the Lilies to immediately repel the Huge. Once the battle finishes. Sachie declares that she no longer wishes to be a part of the Temple Legion, as she no longer trusts the Garden's administration due to their ties with GEHENA. Instead, she'll be forming a Legion of her own, independent from Ludvico's control.

Sachie invites her fellow second years to join her new Legion, and Kayo, conflicted, asks to be given time to think it over. However, she is unable to come to a decision, causing her to be scolded by Kokoro, who advises her against settling for a half-hearted answer regardless of which Legion she chooses. Kokoro argues that being a member of the Temple Legion doesn't mean being the Garden's underlings, and that they too, can stand against Ludvico if it ever comes to it.

The Temple Legion is assembled to neutralize another Cave, but Kayo is still conflicted about joining them. She is found by Tsugumi, who assures her that she'll follow her Schwester no matter which Legion she chooses, and despite still being unsure of herself, Kayo decides to remain with the Temple Legion for the time being. They arrive at the battlefield, where they meet Sachie's new Legion, titled Ironside. Under Himari's orders, the Temple Legion performs the Neunwelt Tactic while Ironside keeps the surrounding Huge at bay, however, Moe fails to properly control the Magisphere during her pass, causing it to be lost. With no other choice, the Temple Legion members with Magie still remaining join Ironside as they perform their own Neunwelt, successfully destroying the Huge.

In the aftermath, Sachie tells the second years of how she learned from Seren that Raimu's father, Professor Kishimoto, had allegedly killed Seren's mother after failing to use her as a test subject for his experiments on implanting unborn fetuses with Huge cells. Kayo theorizes that, in failing to use Seren's mother, he could have used Raimu's mother instead, which would mean Raimu was born a Boosted Lily, though assuring Sachie that her Rare Skill, Charisma, should be able to mitigate any adverse side effects.

White Resistance ~The Blade of Truth~

[edit | edit source]

Due to the formation of Legion Ironside, there are no longer enough Lilies in the Garden for the Temple Legion to meet the minimum of nine members required to perform the Neunwelt Tactic. As such, when deployed to neutralize a Gigant-class, they are forced to rely on the aid of Instructor Sayoko in performing the Neunwelt Tactic.

Later, Kayo, Kokoro and Haneda Catalina Mei are approached by Raimu and Seren, who ask them for help in uncovering more information on the death of Seren's mother. Kokoro is offered a large sum of money for her services, but Kayo very strongly refuses to allow her to accept it, much to Kokoro's displeasure. While reluctant to join their investigation out of fear of being caught, Kayo ultimately tags along with Kokoro and Mei in searching for information within the Garden, after being personally requested by Sachie and Yuria. Meanwhile, Raimu and Seren return to the Kishimoto family home, hoping to find clues within Professor Kishimoto's old belongings.

Kayo, Kokoro and Mei begin to search for information within one of Ludvico's private rooms before being ambushed by Instructor Sayoko, who immediately begins attacking the three Lilies. The Instructor overpowers them with ease, but is eventually interrupted by the arrival of Instructor Ryoko, who forces her to leave. After tending to Kokoro's wounds, Ryoko urges the trio to stop prying into the Garden's affairs. Kayo is particularly left in shock at being directly attacked by one of the Garden's Instructors.

As the Lilies leave for battle following reports of a Cave, Kayo's group meets with Tsugumi, and while Kayo attempts to tell her of how they were just attacked by one of the Garden's Instructors, Kokoro interrupts her, arguing they need to focus on thee battle at hand. The Lilies are then met by Nagisa and Hojo Monica Asahi, who remark they haven't been able to reach Sachie. The group sets off to look for them, learning that Raimu and Seren had been targeted by the Cave while away from the Garden. Regrouping with the remaining Temple Legion members, they agree to keep the outpouring Huge at bay while Legion Ironside sets off to rescue Raimu and Seren.

Successfully making their way back to Ludvico, Raimu and Seren were able to retrieve a notebook they’ve found in Professor Kishimoto’s room, which contains a detailed observation journal of the first fourteen years of Raimu’s life, with Kayo noticing that the very last page had been torn out. While the journal proves that Professor Kishimoto did not in fact kill Seren's mother, they learn that Raimu awakened to her Rare Skill at only 6 years old, and Kayo surmises that she must have been triggered by a particularly shocking event for such an unlikely occurrence to happen. However, Raimu does not remember any of it, suffering from a strong headache whenever she tries to.

The group is approached by Instructor Ryoko, claiming she wants to aid in their investigation in order to prove Rina's innocence. And on her request, Kayo, Kokoro, Mei, Raimu and Seren enter Rina's old dorm room, hoping to uncover further information. There, they're once again ambushed by Sayoko, who begins fighting the Lilies. The Temple Legion is appointed to take down a Gigant-class Huge that appeared near Ludvico, and though Sayoko allows them to leave, Kayo stays behind, not wanting to leave Raimu and Seren behind. Sayoko attempts to interrogate the trio on the contents of Professor Kishimoto's journal, but she is interrupted by the reappearance of Rina. She engages Sayoko in combat, allowing Kayo, Raimu and Seren to finally leave.

The trio run into Sachie, Yuria, Tsugumi and Karen, who were sent to look for them, and as they make their way back to their Legions, the Lilies watch the Gigant-class fleeing the scene, still unharmed. They learn that the Temple Legion and Ironside's joint Neunwelt against the Gigant-class had been interrupted by Nosaka Jacqueline Kazane, who had been resurrected the same way as Mirai was. And so, they set off in pursuit of the Gigant-class, fighting off the surrounding Huge, while Kokoro returns to the Garden to retrieve a second Neunwelt bullet.

The Legions immediately begin a Neunwelt once Kokoro returns, but they're ambushed by Instructors Sayoko and Reika before they are able to finish it, having engineered the situation in order to deplete all the Lilies of their Magie, so they could more easily retrieve Raimu. After Himari and Seren refuse to comply with their demands, the two Instructors disable the protective barrier surrounding Ludvico's campus, causing a Great Cave to form atop the Garden, which allows the Huge to begin a large-scale attack directly against the campus. As such, the Temple Legion members (minus Himari and Nagisa) leave to aid in evacuating the Lilies still in the Garden, leaving Legion Ironside to fight the Instructors and the Gigant-class.

In the aftermath of the battle, Kayo, together with Tsugumi, finally decided to join Legion Ironside. With Ludvico completely ceasing to function due to the damage it sustained, Ironside was left as the only Legion able to hold the line against the large number of Huge that still remained in the area, whose numbers were further bolstered by the breakout of the specimens held as test subjects in GEHENA's Ludvico Labs. At one point, however, Kayo was forced to retreat from the front lines, with Tsugumi taking her position.[2]

Combat Style

[edit | edit source]

Kayo is notorious for her berserker fighting style, which favors solo action over teamplay. She'll often dash to the very front lines in order to fight the Huge at close range, with Tsugumi describing her role as "carving open the path for the others to follow". Though unusual, Kayo's fighting style is said to reflect the bravery for which Ludvico Lilies are renowned for, earning her a positive reputation.[3] Though not uncommon for Ludvico Lilies, Kayo is said to be a particularly zealous fan of Duelist techniques.[4]

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Kayo's confirmation name, "Brigitta", could be in reference to Catholic Saint Brigid of Kildare, the patroness Saint of Ireland.
    • Notably, "Brigitta" is a commonly adopted German pronunciation of "Brigid". In English, a common modern spelling of the name is "Bridget"
  • Kayo's existence as a character predates her presence in the Assault Lily universe. A character named "Matsunaga Kayo" appears in other plays by Ludvico Private Girls' Academy and Saint Ludovico Academy dating back to 2013, where she was performed by Ogata Arisa. However, in some of these plays, Kayo differs significantly from her Assault Lily incarnation in appearance and personality.
  • Kayo's hobbies include collecting information on Lilies and reading manga.[5]
  • Kayo's favorite food is cotton candy.[5]
  • Kayo's dislikes include sneaking around, making decisions and loud noises.[6]
