Legion
Legions are groups of Lilies from the same Garden who fight together as a team.
The main purpose of a legion is to perform combination attacks, such as the Neunwelt Tactic favored by Yurigaoka and many other Gardens. As a result, legions must have the minimum number of Lilies necessary to perform these attacks (9 for the Neunwelt Tactic as it is traditionally executed[1].). In well-defended regions such as Tokyo where full-strength combination attacks are not often necessary, legions may have as few as 4 or 5 members.
It's common for legions to have extra members as spares. One of the largest legions is Yurigaoka's Legion Reginleif, which has 18 members.
The Turnover System[edit | edit source]
At Gardens which train their legions to perform the Neunwelt Tactic, even though a Neunwelt is normally performed by 9 Lilies, the strongest legions are considered those with at least 12 members. This is because it's common for Lilies to become unable to fight due to fatigue or injuries. When this happens, reserve members take their place while those Lilies rest and recover. The entire arrangement is called the turnover system.
Those Lilies in a legion who preferentially sortie are called headliners. Different Lilies are suited to different combat situations, and the convention of having headliners doesn't necessarily outweigh tactical considerations. But there are typically a few Lilies who strive to be present at every battle, as the faces of their legion[1].
Legion Ratings[edit | edit source]
A legion's rating, sometimes called its "Legion World Rating", is a formal and methodical estimate of the legion's strength. It factors in the strength of the Lilies, as well as their coordination, tactical ability, and accomplishments.
The best-known ratings are SSS, SS, and S, followed by AAA, AA, and A. Legions that would receive ratings lower than A are rarely evaluated[1].
Yurigaoka has four SSS-rank legions: Legion Álfheimr, Legion Lohengrin, Legion Reginleif, and Legion Sanngriðr.
