Lily
Lilies are the teenage girls who serve as the front line of defense against the Huge.
When CHARMs were invented, women—in particular, girls of junior high school and high school age—were found to be the most effective at synchronizing with them. This lead to the worldwide establishment of Gardens, military institutions to train these girls in the use of CHARMs and serve as bases for their operations. A Lily is thus a girl who can fight with a CHARM and is stationed at a Garden[1].
Lilies activate their CHARMs using Magi, which is also the life energy of the Huge. They (as well as girls who aren't currently Lilies, but could become them) can perceive Magi as visible light, unlike other people, to whom it is invisible[2].
In battle, Lilies wear specialized clothing that can conduct Magi. Clothing made for civilian use cannot conduct Magi, though Arsenals can modify it to be capable of doing so[3]. More commonly, Lilies simply wear their Garden uniforms or other purpose-built outfits into combat. Lilies sometimes wear more rigid armor atop their combat attire, but it is not considered a necessity and usually only covers small areas when they do.
Legions[edit | edit source]
Lilies fight in groups known as legions. The primary purpose of fighting in a legion is so that they can perform combination attacks, the most common one being the Neunwelt Tactic. To execute the Neunwelt Tactic, multiple Lilies pass a bullet between their CHARMs, and each Lily charges it with her Magi to finally deliver a devastating attack that can obliterate even the mightiest Huge.
The Neunwelt Tactic strikes the best balance between difficulty and power when performed by nine Lilies, and so legions usually sortie with teams of nine, while having a few extra members as spares. In some well-defended areas (such as Tokyo) where those Huge which appear are generally weaker, legions may have as few as five members.
The Dueling Generation[edit | edit source]
As of the current year, there are relatively few third-year Lilies. This is because the Neunwelt Tactic was not in widespread use when these Lilies were in training, and they were instead taught to fight the Huge one-on-one. This was a dangerous battle strategy with a very high fatality rate. 3rd-year Lilies are known as the "Dueling Generation" because of this, while newer Lilies are called the "Neunwelt Generation."[1]
The primary means that Lilies had of killing stronger Huge during the Dueling Generation were B-type Armaments. These powerful but risky weapons left those who used them almost defenseless, and were a contributing factor to how deadly it was to be a Lily during this era.
Lilies from the Dueling Generation with team-oriented Rare Skills such as Regista and Testament mainly supported others from the rear[4].
Rare Skills[edit | edit source]
Most Lilies have a special power called a Rare Skill. There are a variety of different Rare Skills, but every Lily has one of them at most. Some also have subskills, weaker versions of some Rare Skills that Lilies can have a multitude of (in addition to their Rare Skill.)
Boosted Lilies[edit | edit source]
The organization GEHENA has developed techniques to give Lilies special Boosted Skills which normal Lilies do not have. One of the best known Boosted Skills is Regenerator, which allows those with it to recover from injuries almost instantaneously. Lilies who have undergone the procedures to have given these skills are known as Boosted Lilies. Despite the considerable advantages it grants in battle, GEHENA's questionable methods and the side effects of the boosting process upon the Boosted Lilies themselves make them a fiercely divisive organization.
