Hitotsuyanagi Riri
Hitotsuyanagi Riri (一柳梨璃) is a Lily who attends Yurigaoka Girls' Academy. She is the captain of Team Hitotsuyanagi. Her Schutzengel is Shirai Yuyu.
Personality[edit | edit source]
Riri is always bright, cheerful and optimistic no matter how disheartening the situation. She cares deeply about others, even when she doesn't know them well, and never hesitates to place herself in danger for anyone else's sake.
History[edit | edit source]
Riri was born in Yamanashi, Japan. She was a well-liked girl from a young age on account of her boisterous personality and boundless energy. She scored amongst the highest in physical fitness tests of anyone in the entire prefecture of Yamanashi. Some people said that she should be admitted to Kaiseizan, Yamanashi's strongest Garden, on this merit. As a retired soldier, Riri's father also hoped that she would become a Lily[1].
At that time, however, Riri herself was not interested in fighting. She planned to enroll in a civilian high school after graduating from junior high school. Then the Huge attacked Koshu and changed her life.
When she was saved by Shirai Yuyu during the Koshu Evacuation, Riri decided to become a Lily and enroll in Yurigaoka. Riri scored the second lowest of any applicant who took the Yurigaoka entrance exams, and was added to the waitlist as a consolation prize[2]; she barely made it into Yurigaoka through sheer luck.
Combat Style[edit | edit source]
Riri normally fights from the BZ by providing fire support, but is known for her recklessness, often charging into close combat when someone else in the legion is in danger. Her Gungnir is a versatile CHARM that can both use suppressive fire to keep the Huge at bay, or engage them in melee combat. Even though Riri only became a Lily when she entered high school, she's a quick learner who is already decent at using her CHARM.
Riri is also notable for her endurance, born of her excellent athletic ability; she's a reliable teammate who doesn't grow tired even in the most strenuous battles.[3].
Family[edit | edit source]
The Hitotsuyanagi family was well-known in Yamanashi for their crystal workshop.
Riri's father, Hitotsuyanagi Hiroshi (一柳弘嗣), was formerly a distinguished soldier in the JGSDF's Yamanashi garrison, though he was rarely involved in anti-Huge combat. He was called up from the reserves during the Koshu Evacuation. He took his wife's name in order to join the crystal workshop run by her family.
Riri's mother, Hitotsuyanagi Rika (一柳梨花), is known for her remarkably cheerful demeanor, which Riri's own personality likely takes after.
Riri's younger brother, Hitotsuyanagi Hikaru (一柳光), is a fourth-grader in elementary school. He currently lives in the evacuation zone set up for refugees from Yamanashi. According to Riri, he's very mature for his age[1].
Trivia[edit | edit source]
- Riri loves Ramune, and according to Futagawa Fumi, always carries a minimum of 3 bottles of it in her bag[4]. She also likes other junk food, particularly hamburgers.
- Riri likes four-leaf clovers.
- Riri's hobbies are exercise of any sort and (originally due to her family's involvement in the crystal business) collecting crystals. She has brought most of her crystal collection to Yurigaoka with her.
- According to the Special Feature on Radgrid, Riri hates bugs.
- Fumi later explained that Riri doesn't hate all bugs, just certain bugs like cockroaches[5].
- On one early design sketch of the Gungnir, presumably made before the release of the version 1.0 Riri and Yuyu dolls in 2013, Riri is referred to as "Imouto-chan" (Little Sister.)
- The characters in Riri's given name mean "nashi pear" (梨) and "lapis lazuli" (璃). Her surname, Hitotsuyanagi, literally means "one willow."
- Riri's surname may be a reference to the real-world architect Merrell Vories Hitotsuyanagi.

However, Japanese sports that give out these prizes (particularly bowling and golf) generally adjust it to be the second lowest-scoring player, so that it's harder to deliberately win the booby prize.
