Assault Lily: The Fateful Gift

From Assault Lily Wiki

Assault Lily: The Fateful Gift (アサルトリリィ The Fateful Gift) is a stage play created by AZONE International and acus in collaboration with Bushiroad and SHAFT. It is the sequel to League of Gardens, and a continuation of the events of White Resistance ~The Blade of Truth~. The play was originally set to take place at the Kameari Lirio Hall in Katsushika, Tokyo, but due to restrictions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the performance was moved to the Tokyo Tatemono Brillia HALL. Because of this, five additional performances where added to the original ten, and the play ran from September 3 to September 13, 2020.

A sequel, titled Assault Lily: Lost Memories, premiered on January 20, 2022. The events of the play were also loosely adapted in Chapter Two of Assault Lily: Last Bullet.

Plot[edit | edit source]

Prelude[edit | edit source]

Yurigaoka Girls' Academy’s Team Hitotsuyanagi is deployed for a routine neutralization of a Cave, where their captain, Hitotsuyanagi Riri, reminisces on the events that led her to that point, including the formation of her Legion, and her relationship with her Schutzengel, Shirai Yuyu. Meanwhile, Toda Eulalia Kotohi, a Lily of Ludvico Private Girls' Academy reports their previous takedown of a Gigant-class Huge to a mysterious contact. Kotohi is reassured that their experiments will proceed as usual, and Kotohi informs that she gathered them plenty of data, including that of Yuyu, whom Kotohi had vowed to take revenge on due to Yuyu leaving her and her friend for dead during the Koshu Withdrawal, ultimately resulting in her friend’s death.

Prologue[edit | edit source]

Despite taking the Schutzengel’s Oath with Yuyu, Riri worries if she is being an adequate partner, both in combat and as her Schild, remarking how she still cannot bring herself to talk with Yuyu about her late Schutzengel, Kawazoe Misuzu, despite knowing how her memories still cause her grief. Though she is reassured by her teammates, Riri continues to doubt herself, pointing out how she is the only one among them yet to awaken her Rare Skill. Miliam immediately disputes this, recalling the unique sensation they experienced during the Shimokitazawa Expedition, and though Kuo Shenlin believes it is still too soon to draw any conclusions, Futagawa Fumi disagrees, telling Riri of Kishimoto Lucia Raimu, a member of Ludvico’s Legion Ironside and the Schwester of Fukuyama Jeanne Sachie, whom them met previously.

Fumi tells Riri of how during their previous battle, Matsunaga Brigitta Kayo reported that Riri’s Magie possessed the same qualities as Raimu’s, ultimately concluding Riri’s Rare Skill to be the same as hers: the very uncommon Rare Skill Charisma. Fumi and Kaede Johan Nouvel use this to encourage Riri, remarking how Charisma is a highly beneficial Rare Skill for a user of Lunatic Trancer, due to its ability to purify Negative Magie and stabilize one’s mental faculties. With renewed spirits, Riri steels her resolve to become a partner worthy of Yuyu, while Fumi notices that she has suddenly lost contact with Kayo.

In Tokyo, Raimu and Sachie fight off multiple Huge, following the outbreak that came in the aftermath of their Garden's collapse. They’re joined by fellow Ironside members Hasegawa Gabriella Tsugumi and Kuroki Francisca Yuria, who inform them that Kayo had left the frontlines, with her Schwester Tsugumi taking her place. Meanwhile, Yuyu trains in Yurigaoka’s combat simulator, appearing to struggle to make full use of her CHARM. Yoshimura Thi Mai remarks that her current CHARM, a Brionac, handles differently than the Dainsleif she used to wield, and suggests that Yuyu switch back to using one. Yuyu refuses, pointing out the rumors that Misuzu's body had wounds that were said to match her Dainsleif, and that she herself remembers impaling Misuzu with it, though she still cannot remember what happened after. Yuyu realizes how strange it is that, in spite of the rumors, she hasn't heard of anyone in particular who actually saw Misuzu's body, and with the gap in her memories, Yuyu wonders if there is a possibility that Misuzu might still be alive. As they speak, Yuyu’s old Dainsleif is shown to be in Kotohi’s possession.

Yuyu is later met by Riri, who apologizes for not realizing her Schutzengel’s sorrows. Yuyu explains that, as she still cannot remember what happened that day, she fears that the same situation might repeat itself with Riri this time. Riri assures Yuyu that no matter what happens, she won’t ever disappear from her side. An emergency alarm goes off, prompting the pair to head to Yurigaoka’s main office. Meanwhile, Legion Ironside continues to fight off the Huge, being joined by Ishikawa Aoi of Sagami Girls' Academy and Kawamura Yuzuriha of Odaiba Girls' School’s Legion Heorot Saints, as they face off against one of many abnormal Huge that sprawl the area.

Team Hitotsuyanagi are informed of the fall of Ludvico, with the Garden being rendered virtually inoperative, and the Huge held as test subjects in its annexed research lab breaking free and are spreading throughout Tokyo. They're told that the city’s Gardens agreed to send out their own reinforcements to the area, and Team Hitotsuyanagi expresses their desire to go to their aid as well, having shared the battlefield with Ludvico once during the Shimokitazawa Expedition. Ando Tazusa is particularly disheartened by the situation, pointing out the unusually high number of Boosted Lilies Ludvico held, and how they were notorious for forcing their strongest Lilies to undertake the Boosting procedure by purposefully maiming them with selectively deployed Huge. Empathetic to her fellow Boosted Lilies, Tazusa also asks Riri that they take this expedition. Riri agrees, as all of them share Tazusa's sentiment, and they begin to prepare for what would be Team Hitotsuyanagi's first officially conducted expedition. Meanwhile, Kotohi reports to her contact that their plan is proceeding accordingly, as she watches over Raimu.

Over in Tokyo, Ironside, Aoi and Yuzuriha continue to face off against the outpouring Huge, while Kotohi briefly duels Serizawa Chikaru of Herensuge Girls' Academy’s Legion Hervör, before being stopped by their leader, Aizawa Kazuha, who arrives with the remaining members of their Legion: Iijima Renka, Hatsukano Yo and Sasaki Ran. Kotohi is suddenly rushed by an excited Ran, and after exchanging a few blows, the small Lily nonchalantly states how she was never once attacked by any Huge, a remark that leaves Kotohi perplexed. Kazuha tells Kotohi that they’ve come to Sachie’s aid, and invites her along as they search for her.

Before leaving, Kotohi briefly reports to her contact, revealed to be GEHENA, that their plan still continues on, and that “they’ll be brought together soon.” Suddenly, she is met with a Gigant-class Huge, which is quickly subdued by a woman in a black dress, wielding Yuyu’s Dainsleif. Kotohi kneels in reverence to the woman, and tells her that their own plans are also carrying on as expected. The woman pierces the Gigant-class Huge with the Dainsleif before sending it away, and the pair part ways once again.

Sachie’s group are joined by Funada Kiito, Funada Ui, and Shiba Tomoshibi of Odaiba's Legion Hronesnæsse, reporting that they’ve heard of a Gigant-class Huge to be amongst the escapees from Ludvico Labs. They’re soon joined by Kotohi and Hervör, and the sight of the latter causes Kiito to be upset, as she is aware of Herensuge’s particularly cruel treatment of its Lilies. Kazuha assures her that the current iteration of Hervör is different from what it once was, and that they earnestly wish to change their Garden’s ways.

First Battle[edit | edit source]

The Legions receive reports of a sighting of the Gigant-class, and immediately set off to intercept it. Before they leave, Kotohi is approached by Tomoshibi, who had immediately deduced her involvement with the current situation. While assuring that she’ll stay out of her way, Tomoshibi warns Kotohi against targeting her beloved Kiito. Put off by Tomoshibi's devotion, Kotohi recalls her friend’s death during the Koshu Withdrawal, remembering how the battle had left her severely injured, and she was taken in by GEHENA and subjected to multiple Boosting procedures under the guise of "treatment". Kotohi points out how it was her own devotion to taking revenge on Yuyu that allowed her to withstand all of what she suffered at GEHENA's hands, and that she hopes that Yuyu will eventually suffer a fate even more painful than her own.

Team Hitotsuyanagi arrives in Tokyo, immediately making contact with the Gigant-class. Yuyu notices her Dainsleif embedded on the Huge’s body, and it causes her to immediately lose control, unleashing the full power of her Lunatic Trancer against the Gigant-class. The remaining members of Team Hitotsuyanagi draw the Huge away from Yuyu as Riri attempts to stabilize her with Charisma. After successfully calming her down, Riri suggests that they retrieve Yuyu’s Dainsleif, so that she can finally find closure. As they speak, all the surrounding Huge begin suddenly to converge at a single spot, and Team Hitotsuyanagi sets off in pursuit of the Gigant-class.

At the same time, Sachie’s team struggles to make their way to the Gigant-class, as they’re surrounded by an exceedingly large amount of Huge. Ran is suddenly attacked, much to her own surprise, and as Raimu tries to help her up, the pair suddenly experiences a surge of Magie as their hands touch, which allows Ran to destroy all the surrounding Huge at once. The other Lilies are puzzled by what they’ve witnessed, and Kotohi points out Ran’s earlier remark of having never been attacked by the Huge before, with Sachie somberly pointing out that the same happens with Raimu.

Raimu explains how she was born a Boosted Lily due to experiments conducted on her mother when she was pregnant. As a result, she attracts the Huge's presence ever since she was a baby. However, because she was born with Huge cells, the Huge consider her one of their own, and as such, she is never attacked by them. Chikaru confirms that the same is the case for Ran, though they're not aware of the specifics. Sachie tells Hervör of how GEHENA’s interest in Raimu led to the fall of Ludvico, and that Ran may suffer the same fate.

Suddenly, a large number of Huge, including the Gigant-class, converges on their location, attracted by Raimu and Ran’s Magie. Team Hitotsuyanagi follows in pursuit, reuniting with the other Legions just before they spot a second Gigant-class. In the wake of this, Kiito presumes that they’ll likely need at least three Magispheres, on the chance that one of them possesses a Magie Reflector, and though they total only 24 Lilies, Ui assures them that, with the sheer amount of Huge they are faced with, it should raise the local Magie Intensity enough to compensate for it. Yuyu insists that her Legion deal with the Gigant-class they previously encountered, as this is a matter she must settle herself. The others agree, and Team Hitotsuyanagi promptly leaves, while Sachie orders the remaining members to split into two teams as they pursue the second Gigant-class, with one of them serving as backup in the event the Huge does possess a Magie Reflector.

Team Hitotsuyanagi begins their Neunwelt Tactic, during the course of which, they encounter an abnormal Huge able to withstand their attacks. After continuing to fire at it to no avail, the abnormal Huge eventually explodes on its own. Tazusa activates her Rare Skill, Phantasm, but as she does so, the other members receive an ominous vision of the future. Meanwhile, Kotohi speaks with the woman in black, Gozen, who expresses her awe at Ran and Raimu’s power, referring to them as “Princesses”, and stating that, by surpassing their limits in order to survive this battle, they'll be able to "reach even greater heights". After finishing their communication, Gozen is approached by Tomoshibi, and the two fight. Gozen is able to fend off the incredibly fierce Tomoshibi even without using a CHARM, and the latter reveals that she is aware of Gozen’s primary objective not being the Princesses, but to reunite with "someone else". Gozen dismisses the notion, claiming to not be driven by emotion, but Tomoshibi disagrees, telling her that precisely because they’re no longer human that they continue to pursue an element of humanity in all of their endeavors. As Tomoshibi leaves, Gozen expresses her desire to claim Shirai Yuyu in both body and soul.

The two multi-Legion teams begin their Neunwelt, and similarly, as Aoi uses her Phantasm, the Lilies receive an ominous prediction of the future, which immediately comes to pass as a third Gigant-class makes its appearance. Kotohi is in disbelief, as GEHENA had previously told her that only two Gigant-class Huge would be dispatched. She attempts to contact them, but their communication channel was closed, further confirming their betrayal. Kotohi concludes that they intend to kill all Lilies present, including her, in order to prevent her from revealing their plans. Yuria promises to further inquire Kotohi later on, and with no other choice, the Lilies resume their Neunwelts, now with mere hope that neither of the Gigant-class Huge have a Magie Reflector.

Meanwhile, Team Hitotsuyanagi finishes their own Neunwelt, successfully destroying the Gigant-class. As the Huge disintegrates, Yuyu briefly retrieves her Dainsleif before being ambushed by Gozen, wearing a mask. Gozen forces Yuyu to relive the moment when she impaled Misuzu two years ago, and the shock of experiencing her trauma once again leaves Yuyu paralyzed. Gozen uses her Magie to knock Yuyu unconscious, prompting the rest of Team Hitotsuyanagi to attack her. Gozen is able to effortlessly overpower all the Lilies, and leaves taking Yuyu’s Dainsleif with her once again. Yuyu wakes up with no recollection of the previous events, and seeing how intensely Yuyu had reacted, Mai decides against telling her of what happened.

As the multi-Legion teams continue their Neunwelts, an enraged Kotohi takes hold of the Magisphere, finally revealing her extensive combat capabilities as she unleashes her Rare Skill, Zenon Paradoxa. Receiving the final passes, Sachie and Tomoshibi simultaneously fire the finishing shots, but only one of the Gigant-class is destroyed, while the other instead absorbs the Magisphere and amplifies its power. The Huge shoots the Sphere at Ran and Raimu, but Kotohi is able to shield them from the blast, as she possesses a Magie Reflector herself, though it causes her to lose consciousness. With their Magie reserves running low, the Legions make a retreat, seeking to use the downtime to elaborate a plan to deal with the remaining Gigant-class, as well as interrogate Kotohi. Later, Tomoshibi and Gozen speak once again, and Gozen insists that she is not using Kotohi as GEHENA did, and that instead they share the common objective of getting to Yuyu. Tomoshibi taunts Gozen, wondering how she will continue her plans with Kotohi out of the picture.

Interlude[edit | edit source]

Team Hitotsuyanagi reunites with the other Legions, breaking them the news of what transpired on their end. After waking up, Kotohi reveals to the others that, in order to fulfill her revenge against Yuyu, she had been working with GEHENA all along, aiding in their deployment of Irregular Huge and documenting them the results. She reveals that all the Irregular Huge they’ve encountered so far were created by GEHENA, and as such are able to attack Raimu and Ran. Wondering how to deal with the last Gigant-class, Yuria points out that it did not immediately absorb the Magisphere, seeming to struggle for a brief moment. Fumi mentions the uniquely resistant Huge they’ve encountered prior, and surmises that they might be able to defeat the Gigant-class by overpowering it in the same fashion.

Kotohi concurs, citing that due to obtaining the data from their previous battles, the Huge must have been created to withstand the very upper limit of the Neunwelts they had performed so far. Mai posits they then need to create a Magisphere that greatly extrapolates the limits of what GEHENA is currently aware of, with Tazusa adding that to do so, they would need to perform a Neunwelt with as many people as possible, which should be feasible, as having three users of Charisma among them would allow for the supercharged Magisphere to remain stable. Kiito suggests that all 24 Lilies take part in it, but with many of them still drained of their Magie, Sachie suggests that only the ones still capable of fighting take part in it. While initially unsure of herself, Riri volunteers to participate after seeing Raimu's resolve to continue fighting. Yuyu attempts to follow suit, but is advised against it by Mai, as not only she’s drained of her Magie, but she is not in a stable state of mind to return to the battlefield just yet.

Second Battle[edit | edit source]

Of the 24 Lilies present, they decide on 16 performing the Neunwelt, with the others remaining as backup. The team begins to make their passes, and as she watches over the other first years’ performance, Riri, determined to prove her worth to Yuyu, runs off by herself, as the number of surrounding Huge continue to increase. Riri exhausts herself attempting to extract as much of her power as she can, leaving her open to the Huge's attack, and as she is about to be hit, the Team Hitotsuyanagi members in reserve come to her aid. Yuyu tells Riri that she shouldn't push herself beyond what she can do for her sake, urging her to think of her role as their captain. Assuring Riri they'll have her back, Team Hitotsuyanagi provides her backup as she returns to the Neunwelt team. Upon arriving, Raimu uses her own Charisma to replenish Riri’s Magie, telling her that it is a power best used not by herself, but to protect the people around her.

The Neunwelt continues on, and finally, Riri makes her pass with the Magisphere, sending it to Yuyu. Before she can take the finishing shot, however, she is ambushed by Gozen, once again wielding her Dainsleif. While the other Lilies hold the Gigant-class in place, Team Hitotsuyanagi works to keep Gozen away from Yuyu, but as she watches them fight, Yuyu notices that Gozen’s fighting technique is identical to that of Misuzu’s. Gozen eventually overpowers all of Team Hitotsuyanagi, making her way to Yuyu, who is unable to resist, once again paralyzed by the shock.

Gozen attempts to strike down Yuyu before Riri is able to stop her, continuing to try to get through to her Schutzengel. Suddenly, Yuyu finds Misuzu’s dog tags hidden in her uniform, which pushes her to snap out of her shock. Retrieving the Magisphere from Yuyu, Riri uses Charisma to revitalize her teammates’ Magie yet again. As she does so, Gozen attempts to strike Riri, but is stopped by Yuyu. The two battle, with the remaining Team Hitotsuyanagi members giving Yuyu support, and eventually, Yuyu lands a hit on Gozen’s mask, causing her to retreat, covering her face. With the path now clear, Riri makes the finishing shot, and successfully destroys the Gigant-class.

Epilogue[edit | edit source]

In the aftermath, Kotohi reports to GEHENA that while their experiments with the Gigant-class Huge succeeded, she failed to retrieve Raimu and Ran. She tells them of how all Lilies were able to survive the battle, and that they won’t have things go their way from now on, discarding her comms device. She meets with Gozen, who assures her that she won’t allow them to take her life, just as she has done when she previously rescued Kotohi from GEHENA's custody. Gozen wonders if the power Yuyu displays is owed to the importance she places on Misuzu and Riri, particularly expressing that she wishes to see how being with Riri will change her going forward. Finally, Gozen declares that the next time they meet, Yuyu will be hers.

Meanwhile, Yuyu tells Riri of how, after taking the Schutzengel’s Oath, she and Misuzu exchanged their dog tags, and that Misuzu’s had the words “so that Yuyu may remain safe, and live” engraved on it. She presumes it must have fallen inside her uniform after handling her old Dainsleif again, and that upon retrieving it, it reminded her of her own promise to keep Riri safe. Joined by Team Hitotsuyanagi, they ponder Gozen’s identity, with Yuyu remarking that she seemed somewhat familiar, having “a nostalgic scent”, and they presume that she’ll attempt to come after Yuyu again. The other members tell Yuyu of the insecurities that Riri carried, and she assures her Schild that she has long been her pillar of strength, regardless of any power or skill that she may or may not have. The Cave alarm goes off, and Team Hitotsuyanagi leaves for battle, ready to face the battles looming in their horizons.

Production[edit | edit source]

The play is the second project released under the "Assault Lily Project (アサルトリリィプロジェクト)" label, immediately preceding the animated series "Assault Lily: Bouquet", which began airing a month after. The Assault Lily project is a joint venture between AZONE and acus, holders of the Assault Lily brand, and the multimedia enterprise Bushiroad, aiming to expand the production of Assault Lily's stage plays, as well as the launch of several other media, such as music, merchandise, the television series and the smartphone game, Assault Lily: Last Bullet, which the play was developed in conjunction with.[1]

Production was led by Odaka Taro (岡田太郎), with Bushiroad's Kitani Takaaki (木谷高明) as lead supervisor and Matsuzaki Fumiya (松崎史也) of SHAFT as production director. Credited with additional production are Hayazono Sho (早園正) and Nakagawa Shuuhei (中川秀平) of AZONE, Kubota Mitsutoshi (久保田光俊) and Ooshima Miku (大嶋実句) of SHAFT, Gensho Tetsuo (源生哲雄) of TBS, Kawashima Masayuki (川島将之) and Kobayashi Masahide (小林正英) of Pokelabo.[2]

The studio Kyodo Factory are credited with providing additional staff. The original draft was by the author of the Assault Lily Series, Obanazawa Ken'ei (尾花沢軒栄), with Sakuragi Sayaka (桜木さやか) of the Ludvico Private Girls' Academy troupe in charge of the screenplay.

Soundtrack[edit | edit source]

The soundtrack for The Fateful Gift, titled Assault Lily: League of Gardens/Assault Lily: The Fateful Gift - Special CD (アサルトリリィ League of Gardens/アサルトリリィ The Fateful Gift 特典CD) was composed by Tani Naoki (谷ナオキ) and was released as a bonus for the Blu-ray release of play and its prequel, League of Gardens. It includes the play's opening theme, "Kimi no Te wo Hanasanai", as well as tracks "Bonds", and "Count Our Blessings", performed by Team Hitotsuyanagi's stage actresses, for a total of 37 tracks. The Blu-ray containing the soundtrack was released on May 26, 2021, while the vocal tracks would later be released in streaming services as part of the "Edel Lilie" single, which served as the play's ending theme, released under the label Bushiroad Music.

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • Fumi is now shown wielding her blue Gungnir, after being the only member of Team Hitotsuyanagi not to have a unique prop for her CHARM in League of Gardens.
  • Yujia and Shenlin now wear uniforms directly based on their original designs, as their attires in League of Gardens were more in line with Yurigaoka's standard uniform.
  • In the play, Fumi points out how Riri's Rare Skill is the same as Raimu's: Charisma. Curiously, in the original version of Schwester's Secret, upon learning of Raimu's Rare Skill, Saeki Julia Karen remarks how it is "the same Skill as Hitotsuyanagi Riri from Yurigaoka!". In order to avoid the continuity error of Riri not yet being aware of her Rare Skill at this point in time, the revival of Schwester's Secret changes Karen's line to be "I hear that Hitotsuyanagi Riri of Yurigaoka may or may not have awakened to the same Skill!"
  • The play is, chronologically, the first time Kayo and Tsugumi are shown as members of Legion Ironside, as while they are shown joining the Legion at the end of the original White Resistance ~The Blade of Truth~, held a year prior, the play's later revival would ommit this scene.
  • The play marks the first ever appearance of Legion Hervör, who would go on to become one of three primary Legions portrayed in Assault Lily: Last Bullet.
  • Tazusa explains that Boosting procedures were originally conceived to merely complement a Lily’s shortcomings and aid her in fighting better. One such Lily who underwent a moderate Boosting procedure is Homma Akehi.
    • Furthermore, Fumi also explains that the more a Lily undergoes Boosting, the less stable the Huge cells on her body become, ultimately turning the Lily into a quasi-Huge, as it was the case with Kishimoto Maria Mirai.
  • Sachie points out that Kotohi "hasn't joined any Legion", implying that after the fall of Ludvico, other Legions began to arise within the Garden.
  • When watching Sachie, Renka refers to her Rare Skill by its English Name, “Circlet Bless”, as opposed to the more frequently used Japanese name, 円環の御手 (Enkan no Mite).
