[edit | edit source]The Odaiba Counteroffensive. A battle that saw its conclusion without a single Lily or civilian losing their lives
Amidst some of the most grueling conditions, how was the First Division able to live through it all?
This is the tale of the actual battles they undertook, hidden beneath the Counteroffensive's "miraculous", "historical" and "legendary" status.
Summary
[edit | edit source]Part One
[edit | edit source]During the battle at the Aomi undersea tunnel, the First Division struggles to hold out against the Huge as they begin to reach the limits of their exhaustion. Though faced with the third Gigant-class Huge they've encountered, the Lilies remain unable to perform the Neunwelt Tactic as Shirai Yuyu is unconscious and Taniguchi Hijiri is providing her care. As they continue to hold their ground, the First Division's leader, Takegoshi Chihana, notes the unusual circumstances of the Soldier Ants' appearance, as well as the difficulty they're having in defeating them. In the meantime, Fukuyama Jeanne Sachie and Ichinomiya Himari continue to face off against the swarm of Soldier Ants, in spite of their injuries.
Several hours earlier, at Uminomori Park, the First Division engages the Soldier Ants. After being informed by Tithia Paumgartner that the Fifth Division had been driven out of the battlefield, they were forced to halt their advance towards Wakasu Park, where the Nestless Ultra and the Great Cave was, and instead begin drawing the hordes of Huge away so that the Second and Third Divisions could proceed in their stead, while also taking the task of eliminating the several Caves in Uminomori. As they continue to fight, Yuyu notes that Sachie appears particularly agitated.
The Lilies make contact with the next wave of Huge, and with several Large-class present, Chihana instructs Hijiri and Hibino Waku to engage them individually. Himari questions her orders, but Chihana explains that as both of them are Phantasm users, attempting to careleslly have them work in unison may induce unnecessary confusion from their predictions. Meanwhile, Kawamura Yuzuriha wonders why the pair was ordered to engage the Huge without any backup, and Chihana, confident that they would be capable of handling it by themselves, encourages Yuzuriha to keep her focus on her own role. Yuzuriha acquiesces, but thinks to herself that since she hasn't yet awakened her Rare Skill, she can't actually be useful to any of the others.
Watching in awe as Hijiri and Waku masterfully mow down the swarms of Huge, Yuzuriha thinks of how she had always wanted to awaken to Phantasm, but had only been able to unlock its Subskill form "Rainbow Path". Sulking, Yuzuriha admits to herself that even she were to awaken to Phantasm, she would never be able to reach Hijiri and Waku's level. As they continue to fight, Yuzuriha's frustration at her realization causes her Magie to begin sparking, and quickly taking notice of its characteristics, Chihana restructures the First Division's entire formation around her. Chihana tells Yuzuriha that her Rare Skill is starting to awaken, but Yuzuriha still doesn't see how that would make her useful, as she wouldn't be awakening to Phantasm anyways.
Another wave of Huge, led by two Gigant-class, approaches the Lilies, and Chihana orders the First Division to split into two teams, with the eventual goal of performing two Neunwelt Tactics in short succession. Chihana places Yuzuriha as the cornerstone of their operation, encouraging her to reach for and embrace her awakening powers in order to ensure its success. Though still struggling to accept that she wouldn't be awakening to Phantasm, Yuzuriha is eager to find a way to make her powers useful to her teammates, and as she analyzes the battlefield in order to make it happen, she comes to the conclusion that they need a way for Chihana's Regista to reach all the Lilies equally. Soon after this realization, Yuzuriha's powers bloom, allowing the others to fight off the Huge with greater ease, and Chihana quickly recognizes her Rare Skill to be Testament.
Part Two
[edit | edit source]Shortly after Yuzuriha awakens to Testament, Sachie and Yuyu take the role of lures for the first Gigant-class while the rest of the First Division continues to mow down the Large-class in the area. Sachie, appearing frustrated, attempts to dash directly at the Gigant-class, but is stopped by Yuyu after she was targeted by the Small-class Huge still nearby. Yuyu questions her actions, and Sachie tells her that she desperately wants to become someone whose powers can actually be used to protect others. Yuyu admits that she shares her sentiment, though acknowledging this impulse to try to do everything by herself as a "bad habit" of hers.
After fully clearing the area of Large-class Huge, the First Division begins their first Neunwelt Tactic, with Sachie being ordered to continue distracting the second Gigant-class while they carry it out. After most members make their passes, Himari suggests to Chihana that they quickly move to provide backup to the members still exchanging the Magisphere, arguing that they should work under the assumption of a worst-case scenario. Chihana, however, disagrees, declaring that they should change their formation to one that assumes the Gigant-class will be defeated, as she is confident their Neunwelt will succeed.
Hijiri takes the finishing shot, and the first Gigant-class is successfully destroyed. Sachie returns soon after, and informs that the failed to keep the second Gigant-class in place, and it is now advancing towards Aomi. As the Neunwelt left the First Division with low Magie reserves, Himari proposes that they split into two teams, with one continuing to fight the Small-class while the second works to slow down the Gigant-class. Chihana, however, requests that the Fourth Division handles the Gigant-class while they continue to hold off the swarm of Small-class, a plan that would allow them to better recover their Magie.
With all members in agreement to Chihana's strategy, the First Division fights the Soldier Ants with great difficulty due to their low Magie, with Sachie being the exception, as she didn't participate in their Neunwelt. Taking advantage of this, Sachie dashes directly at the horde of Huge, hoping to compensate for failing to keep the Gigant-class restrained. Sachie soon finds herself surrounded, but Yuyu is able to rescue her. Yuyu pleads with Sachie to ease her desperations, noting the responsibility they have to fight for those that depend on them. Yuyu argues that while it is right for them to lay down their lives in order to defend others, it is not yet the time for such sacrifice.
As Yuyu continues to fight the horde of Huge, Sachie admires her fighting form, and thinks of how she would like to become someone who, like her, can wield their power so masterfully despite all the burdens weighing down her heart. Motivated, Sachie resumes fighting, and as she is assaulted by another group of Huge, she successfully intercepts them by herself after retrieving a second CHARM from one of the nearby CHARM pods, awakening to the Rare Skill Circlet Bless. Sachie decimates the Huge surrounding her, and Himari is particularly in awe of the elegance of her fighting style. With the provisional CHARM Sachie retrieved already completely destroyed, Chihana gives one of her own CHARMs for her to use.
As the First Division's battle progresses, Sachie, Yuzuriha and Hijiri's CHARMs break, leading Chihana to retreat from her commanding role in order to repair them. As the remaining Lilies continue their offensive, Waku and Mozuna Noa display a remarkable degree of teamwork. Just as Chihana finishes her repars, another Gigant-class appears before the Lilies, and they soon perform a second Neunwelt Tactic, with Waku and Noa once again showing impecable coordination while making their passes. Noa takes the finishing shot, and succeeds in destroying the Gigant-class.
Though once again left exhausted of their Magie, the First Division continues to hold off the Huge, eventually being being pushed to the Aomi undersea tunnel, where several Caves had formed. While fighting, Sachie and Himari are knocked down by an attack, and a group of ten Large-class begins to close in on the Lilies. Yuyu dashes ahead in an attempt to kill all of them by herself, but is promptly knocked down as well, and Sachie pleads with her to stop, urging her to recall the words she herself had spoken earlier. In response, Yuyu insists that this is something she must do, as she isn't the "Grim Reaper" that others made her out to be, but someone who fights to protect others. Once again dashing towards the group of Large-class, Yuyu activates her Lunatic Trancer, causing her to be promptly possessed by her Divine Possession Aberration.
In her berserker state, Yuyu single-handedly destroys all the Large-class Huge, as well as all the Caves in the area, before immediately collapsing. Sachie realizes that she had just then made the decision to place her life on the line in order to protect everyone else, and expresses her desire to honor her resolve, with the rest of the First Division equally touched by her bravery. As Yuyu is unconscious, Chihana asks that they continue to hold their position until the Second Division can neutralize the Nestless Ultra.
Part Three
[edit | edit source]Yuyu regains consciousness as the First Division continues struggling to keep up with the oncoming hordes of Huge, as they are now faced with their third Gigant-class Huge of the day. Chihana engages against the Gigant-class by herself, determined to honor the resolve that all her teammates had shown so far. But though Chihana's resilience motivates the rest of the First Division to continue fighting, all the surrounding Huge, including the Gigant-class, suddenly halt their advances, and instead begin moving towards Wakasu Park, where the Nestless ultra is.
Chihana considers continuing ahead to prevent the Huge from reaching Wakasu Park, but is hesitant given how extremely exhausted the entire First Division is. By Waku's suggestion, the First Division members make plans to have an outing at a cake shop after the battle is over, motivating Chihana and all the other members to continue carrying through. Having ascertained that the Huge began moving towards Wakasu Park due to the other Divisions beginning their takedown of the Nestless Ultra, Chihana once again declares her intentions to hold the horde of Huge at bay. Himari suggests that taking down the Gigant-class leading the horde should prove effective in stopping their advance, and Chihana agrees to it, though adding that they will still need to lure away the remaining Huge right after in order to prevent them from scattering around the area, noting that any strategy must always account for its worst-case scenario.
The First Division reaches the Gigant-class and promptly open fire in order to slow its advance. To ensure their strategy's success, Chihana gives Hiiri, Waku and Yuzuriha a set of Magie recovery shots, aiming to have Yuzuriha's ability as a Linker allow for Hijiri and Waku to utilize their Phantasm in unison. The plan proceeds as expected, and the trio is able to clear the area enough for the Neunwelt Tactic to begin. The First Division begins making their passes, over the course of which Noa's Rare Skill begins to show its first signs.
Together, Hijiri and Waku take the finishing shot, but though they succeed in destroying the Gigant-class, the First Division is yet again left to contend with a large horde of Huge while with low Magie. Regardless, all Lilies remain determined to continue fighting, and this resolve allows them to hold out until the Second and Third Divisions finally destroy the Nestless Ultra, causing all the Huge crawling across Odaiba to evaporate. As the sky clears, Chihana announces to the other members of the First Division that not a single casualty had been reported.
Later that day, Himari speaks with Chihana, telling her of how much she was able to learn while fighting by her side and watching her conduct, and expresses her desire to one day join her in combat once again, a sentiment that Chihana shares. The next day, following the celebration parties, Noa and Waku reunite. Noa regrets how they were ultimately unable to go out and have cake due to the cleanup work they're set to undertake, but Waku doesn't mind, instead wanting to discuss something more important before Noa returns to Yurigaoka. Waku is reluctant to part ways after how much she enjoyed being by Noa's side in battle, and offers her bracelet to her as a token of their bond. Noa accepts, offering her a memento of her own in return, and the pair promises to meet each other again, already making plans to reschedule the First Division's cake outing.

Trivia
[edit | edit source]- The word Erwachen originates from German, and translates to "Awakening".
- In the event's key visual, Sachie is shown wielding an Asterion similar to that of Kishimoto Maria Mirai.
- The outfit Hijiri wears throughout the event is called "Tactical Conference Uniform", implying that it was the standard outfit worn by the Lilies attending the conference.
- Interestingly, the outfit "Elegant Striker" was previously introduced as a uniform worn by the Lilies who participated in the Odaiba Counteroffensive. However, Yuyu, one of the Lilies implied to have worn this uniform, does not actually wear it throughout the duration of this event.
