Akutsu Magdalena Maaya

Akutsu Magdalena Maaya (あくつ・マグダレーナ・魔妖), also known in later appearances as Akutsu Lucifer Maaya (あくつ・ルシファ・魔妖) is a Special Instructor at Ludvico Private Girls' Academy.

Personality

Maaya is normally somewhat aloof, speaking in a monotone, uninterested tone of voice, even when making humorous remarks. However, she is shown to be irritable at times, particularly when she is made to deploy to the battlefield. Maaya is noted to be a very strict Instructor, with Ludvico's students and even other Instructors appearing intimidated by her.

Schwester's Prayer (Original Ver.)

Main article: Assault Lily: Schwester's Prayer

When the first-year Lilies' training session is suddenly interrupted by the appearance of a Cave, the second year Lilies take the lead in countering the Huge's advance. They are eventually faced with a Gigant-class, which knocks down Fukuyama Jeanne Sachie and Ichinomiya Michaela Himari despite their attempts to push back. As the Gigant-class moves in to kill the Lilies, they are rescued by Maaya, who single-handedly takes it down, prompting the surrounding Huge to retreat. However, Maaya collapses on the floor soon after, angrily remarking that she had used up all of her Magie, which would require her a full month to recover.

Behind the Scenes

The character of "Akutsu Maaya" predates her appearance in the Assault Lily universe, appearing in previous stage plays performed by the Ludvico Private Girls' Academy troupe, where she is always performed by Sakuragi Sayaka, Ludvico's playwright and stage director. Maaya would primarily appear during a short interactive interlude between the play acts, where, under the guise of conducting a "special lesson", she would offer feedback notes on the stage actresses' performances during the first half of the play, often having the actress who made the most mistakes perform a small punishment game.

In the Assault Lily stage plays, Maaya's only appearance within the storyline occurred in the original Schwester's Prayer, with her subsequent appearances in Schwester's Secret and Schwester's Oath occurring exclusively in the interlude segments. Starting from the original version of White Resistance ~The Promise's Path~, the plays no longer featured the interactive interludes, and in the revival version of Schwester's Prayer, Maaya is replaced by Amatsu Marei in her single in-universe scene.

Sakuragi would return to portraying Maaya in voice only in New Chapter 2, where she would explain the basics of the Assault Lily universe to the audience before the start of the play. She later appeared in the same capacity in The Snowdrop.

Trivia

• Maaya's baptismal name, "Magdalena", is in reference to Mary Magdalene, one of Jesus' most notorious followers during his ministry.
  • While likely added for humorous effect, Akutsu adopted the baptismal name of "Lucifer" in Schwester's Secret, which would go on to be used in all of her subsequent appearances.
• Maaya is notorious for having completely mastered her Rare Skill, Heaven's Measure, awakening to its Dead Eye advancement. As such, the equally proficient Heaven's Measure user Miyairi Fubuki has been referred to as "Akutsu's Second Coming".
• Maaya has her own Twitter account, titled @ludojyoakutsu.
