Izumi Rosa Rina

From Assault Lily Wiki

Izumi Rosa Rina (泉・ローザ・莉奈) is an Instructor at Ludvico Private Girls' Academy. Together with her longtime friend, Kosaka Anastasia Ryoko, Rina was primarily responsible for conducting and overseeing the training sessions for Ludvico's first-year Lilies, as well as appointing the members of the Garden's Top Legion, the Temple Legion. Secretly, however, Rina and Ryoko worked in service of GEHENA, reluctantly aiding in their experimentations on Ludvico's students. Rina is a major character in the Ludvico series of stage plays.

Personality

[edit | edit source]

Rina is noted to be a very stern and strict teacher, who adopts a completely merit-based approach to teaching.[1] As such, she submits her students to very intense training sessions in hopes to extract their full potential. Despite this, however, Rina shows genuine care for the Lilies she teaches, and is strongly against the idea of causing them any harm. As such, while many of her students see her as a fearsome figure due to her strict training regimen, she is equally respected by them, to the point that Makabe Melania Sayoko, a seemingly much more friendly and easygoing Instructor, claimed to feel that her students preferred Rina over her.

Rina is greatly conflicted by her subservience to GEHENA, as the care she displays for the well-being of her students often clashes with the institution's unethical handling of Ludvico's Lilies. Rina particularly regrets being the one to send Kishimoto Maria Mirai into GEHENA's hands, feeling that she betrayed the Lily's earnest aspirations to better herself. As both Rina and Ryoko appear to serve as mere underlings, they are mostly unaware of the more sensitive information pertaining to GEHENA's goals. As such, whenever learning that information was withheld from her, Rina does not shy away from voicing her criticisms at her superiors, and ultimately decided to abandon their cause entirely after learning of the more appalling details of their experiments.

History

[edit | edit source]

Rina was a highly distinguished Lily during her time in active duty, said to have spawned multiple legends in her tenure as a member of the Temple Legion.[1] She met and became good friends with Kosaka Anastasia Ryoko during this time, and the pair would very frequently share the battlefield, with Ryoko cheering on Rina and the Temple Legion as part of her own group, the Cheering Squad.[2]

After graduating, Rina and Ryoko became Instructors together, and likewise, the pair was eventually enlisted to aid GEHENA in conducting experiments on Ludvico's students, being particularly tasked with sourcing the Lilies with the highest Skiller Values to undergo Boosting procedures. At some point, Rina taught Kaido Beatrice Chiharu's class, with the Lily growing to deeply admire her.

At the height of the Duelist era, Rina taught Kishimoto Maria Mirai, the strongest Lily in all of Ludvico, with Rina taking notice of Mirai's peculiar tendency to attract the Huge's presence. Due to her ever increasing power, Mirai continuously struggled with controlling her abilities, and so, Rina directed her to GEHENA, who offered the Lily a way to take hold of her powers.

However, while on her way to their lab, Mirai was suddenly ambushed by a Cave, with the ensuing battle leaving her at the brink of death. She was then collected by GEHENA, and made into a Boosted Lily under the pretense of "receiving treatment". Mirai, however, was utterly repulsed by what she had been made into, prompting her to suddenly leave Ludvico, and eventually appearing to lose her life shortly before the Makuhari Recapture.

Schwester's Prayer

Rina, together with Ryoko, are assigned as the Instructors for the newly enrolled B Class of first-years, which notably has Kishimoto Lucia Raimu, Mirai's younger sister, as one of its students. The pair explains to them the basics of combat, as well as Ludvico's educational policies centering around joining the Garden's single operating Legion, the Temple Legion. The Instructors then summon the second year Lilies to supervise the first-years' training, with Raimu being placed under Fukuyama Jeanne Sachie as per GEHENA's orders.

Later, Rina and Ryoko hold a secret conference with GEHENA, reporting to them that Amamiya Sophia Seren and Ichinomiya Michaela Himari are currently the Lilies with the highest potential amongst the first and second year classes, respectively. They also disclose Raimu and Kuroki Francisca Yuria's present situations, with GEHENA particularly remarking that Raimu was sure to wield results, as she is Mirai's sister. Their conference is interrupted by the appearance of a Cave, but with no orders to assemble the Temple Legion yet, Rina orders all Lilies to deploy to battle.

After the battle, Rina and Ryoko confirm to GEHENA that Himari currently has the highest Skiller Value in the entire Garden, and so, they are ordered to conduct the same procedure as the one done to Mirai. Ryoko questions if they aren't moving too fast, but GEHENA retorts that Mirai had simply been a "failed attempt" due to her Rare Skill being Phase Transcendence. Appalled at their callousness, Rina attempts to reason with them, arguing how they are betraying their students' earnest desires to help humanity by making them into human experiments, but her pleas are immediately rebuked by GEHENA, telling her that their experiments are the means to humanity's triumph. Defeated, the two Instructors agree to continue following their plans, with Rina being particularly warned against disobeying their orders.

During Ludvico's Easter Festival, Ludvico receives reports of another Cave, with a swarm of Huge quickly making their way towards the Garden's cemetery, Maria's Hill. As Rina orders the Lilies to deploy into battle, Ryoko informs Rina that Raimu was by herself at Maria's Hill, prompting Rina to remember GEHENA's particular interest in Raimu. Predicting the appearance of a Gigant-class Huge, Rina assembles the Temple Legion in order to defeat it, with Raimu being selected as one of its members.

In the aftermath of the battle, Rina and Ryoko pray together at Maria's Hill. Distraught, Rina wonders if Mirai's spirit resents her for betraying her sincere desire to become stronger under her guidance, tearfully revealing to Ryoko that she was the one who sent Mirai to GEHENA.

Schwester's Secret

While holding another conference with GEHENA, Rina questions them about Raimu, citing that much like Mirai, she also appears to attract the Huge's presence. However, GEHENA refuses to offer her an answer, prompting Rina to declare that she will no longer aid in their experiments. This causes her to be strongly admonished by GEHENA, chiding Rina for her self-righteousness, labeling it as vain and self-centered. Humiliated, Rina leaves the conference, being advised to "cool her head".

Rina assembles the Temple Legion after receiving reports of another Cave, and in the ensuing battle, the Lilies encounter Mirai still alive, though visibly different from her former self. After the battle, Rina and Ryoko report the event to GEHENA, who reveal they were already aware of Mirai's circumstances. In utter dismay, Rina inquires why Mirai refused to return to Ludvico for all this time, but after GEHENA once again refuses to answer her, Rina leaves the conference halfway through.

Later, Rina tells Ryoko of how Mirai, as one of the greatest Lilies of the Duelist era, would often fight without the aid of a Legion, despite her strange tendency to attract the Huge's presence. She explains that, as these battles caused her power to continue growing, Mirai had increasingly less control over her own abilities, and that it was GEHENA that offered her a way to regain control over her powers. Rina tells Ryoko of the Cave that ambushed Mirai, remarking that it went undetected by any searchers, essentially preventing her from requesting backup. Rina worries that Raimu may suffer the same fate should her own power continue to grow, and is determined to keep it from happening.

After detecting another Cave, Rina assembles the Temple Legion once again, and they promptly encounter Mirai a second time in the ensuing battle. Mirai, this time completely overtaken by the Huge cells in her body, turns to fighting the Lilies, being eventually defeated by Raimu as she uses a Magisphere to purge Mirai's body of Huge cells, killing her in the process. In the aftermath, Ryoko finds a completely heartbroken Rina at Maria's Hill, wondering how Mirai must've felt as the repeated Boosting procedures she was subjected to continued to destroy her body.

Vowing to protect Raimu from suffering the same fate as her sister, Rina sets off to uncover the true reason for the sisters' tendency to attract the Huge, declaring her intentions to join her students in fighting for the truth.

During her investigations of the Kishimoto sisters' true nature, Rina recorded her discoveries in a journal, where she wrote that the one who conducted the Boosting experiments on Mirai had been her own father, Professor Kishimoto. After learning of Mirai and Raimu's true nature as born Boosted Lilies due to experiments conducted on their mother, Rina decided to leave Ludvico, with her journal eventually coming into possession of Ryoko and Kaido Beatrice Chiharu, who had become herself an Instructor by this point.

In Rina's absence, Ryoko and Chiharu continued to investigate her disappearance, but after Chiharu is mysteriously murdered in Rina's old room, Instructors Makabe Melania Sayoko and Toride Suzanne Reika publicly announce Rina as the perpetrator. As a result, Rina is placed on the national most wanted list, and Ludvico is left on high alert for her possible reappearance.

White Resistance ~The Blade of Truth~

During her time away from Ludvico, Rina presumably learned of Professor Kishimoto's observation journal, where he recorded the first 14 years of Raimu's life in order to study her nature as a born Boosted Lily. The journal's very last page, however, had been torn out, as it presumably contained information on Raimu's potential to communicate with and possibly control the Huge. Rina learned that Mirai had been the one to take this last page, and was eventually able to retrieve it.

In light of her new discoveries, Rina returns to Ludvico, arriving just in time to rescue Raimu, Seren and Matsunaga Brigitta Kayo, who were targeted by Instructor Sayoko due to conducting their own investigations on Raimu's father. Before the Lilies leave, Rina hands Seren the final page of Professor Kishimoto's journal. The two Instructors fight, with Rina chiding Sayoko for attacking her own students, while Sayoko in turn mocks Rina for her change of heart, despite being the one to offer Mirai to GEHENA. As Sayoko is herself a Boosted Lily, Rina is unable to defeat her, and after hearing a student in need of help, she decides not to follow Sayoko after the Instructor leaves.

Rina rescues Nagase Marta Nonoka after the Lily was surrounded by multiple Huge without a CHARM. Later, Rina reaches Legion Ironside, who had been ambushed by Sayoko and Reika while fighting a Gigant-class. Ryoko shortly joins Rina in fighting the Instructors, and while the pair manages to gain the upper hand, Ryoko suddenly kills both Reika and Sayoko in cold blood. Rina turns to confronting Ryoko, revealing that she knows the Instructor to actually be Seren's father, Professor Amamiya, possessing her body, and that she was the one to kill Chiharu. Ryoko drops her character and reveals her true identity, telling Rina and the Lilies of how Professor Amamiya, the one actually responsible for conducting experiments on Raimu's mother, fused his consciousness with her own in order to continue his observations of Raimu.

Rina and the Lilies battle Ryoko, but are easily overpowered, as the Instructor had undergone a special Boosting procedure that grants her a near limitless output of Magie, which attracts even more Huge to their location. Rina then tells Raimu that, as she was born a Boosted Lily, she is seen by the Huge as one of their own, which should allow her to form a sympathetic bond with the Huge surrounding them. Rina asks that Raimu focus her mind on the Gigant-class while she and the other Lilies continue to battle Ryoko. Rina attempts to plead with Professor Kishimoto, arguing that the Magie on Ryoko's body cannot be truly infinite, and that her body will only continue to break down the more she uses it. However, Ryoko ignores her pleas, and knocks Rina down.

Eventually, Raimu is able to briefly command the Gigant-class Huge to attack Ryoko, who is successfully taken down after Seren and Yuria hold her in place for long enough to be hit. Ryoko does not die, however, and after briefly fighting Raimu, she is then lethally shot by Sachie, and as Professor Kishimoto's consciousness is purged from her body, the true Ryoko extends her hand to Rina in her final moments, before she succumbs to her wounds.

In the aftermath of the battle, Rina prays for Ryoko's soul at Maria's Hill, lamenting the fact that she was unable to save her old friend. In tears, Rina vows to continue protecting Ludvico, promising to return the Garden to the glory it once had in their days as Lilies.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Rina's confirmation name, "Rosa", is likely in reference to Catholic Saint Rose of Lima.
    • Interestingly, not only does her confirmation name and given name spelled together resemble "Rose of Lima" ("Rosa Rina"), but they also resemble the name "Rosalina", which could reference a completely different Saint, Roseline de Villeneuve.
  • Rina's existence as a character predates her presence in the Assault Lily universe. A character named "Izumi Rina" appears in other plays by Ludvico Private Girls' Academy and Saint Ludovico Academy dating back to 2013. In some of these plays, she is a high school student, not an instructor.
  • Rina's interests include flower arranging and performing traditional tea ceremonies.[3]
  • Rina's favorite foods are Mont Blanc and Soba noodles.[4]
