Otake Sunao
This article contains major spoilers for the Assault Lily stage plays. Unless you're confident that you know them already, read further at your own peril! |
Otake Sunao (尾竹廉) is a first-year Lily who attends Odaiba Girls' School. A sub-member of Legion Heorot Saints, Sunao is a recurring character in the Odaiba series of stage plays.
Personality
[edit | edit source]Contrary to the notoriety her beautiful looks and her remarkable skillset as a Lily earned her, Sunao is modest and earnest, and does not think particularly highly of herself. Rather than the "Idol Lily" others see her as, Sunao is much more of a Lily Nerd[1] in the molds of Futagawa Fumi or Toki Kureha, holding a particular fascination with the uniforms worn by Lilies, especially their Legion uniforms.[2] She'll thoroughly research uniform designs from Gardens all across the country, taking particular interest on ones she deems "cute".[3] Similarly, Sunao is also a fashion savant, and enjoys dressing up in outfits that pique her interest.[4]
When in the company of her fellow first years, Sunao is easygoing and excitable, participating in their banter and even teasing them frequently. But in contrast, Sunao is incredibly disciplined and deliberate when in combat. True to her modest attitude in regards to her most noteworthy qualities, she much more prefers to act in support of her Legion mates[5] despite the several offensive skills she boasts, being described as a "sleeper" kind of Lily.[6]
History
[edit | edit source]Sunao was a student of Odaiba Girls' School since kindergarten, very quickly drawing the attention of others not only due to her beautiful looks, but also the remarkable degree of potential she displayed.[7] At some point, Sunao met Suzuki Chinami, and the pair developed a very close friendship, with Sunao coming to support Chinami's feelings towards Hishida Haru.[1] In a similar vein, Sunao would develop an admiration towards the senior Tsukioka Momiji.[8]
The Odaiba Counteroffensive
[edit | edit source]During their third year of junior high, Sunao and Chinami were among the Lilies present in Odaiba when the Odaiba Counteroffensive unfolded. Though the pair found themselves stranded in Wakasu during the Soldier Ants' rampage, they were able to survive by locking themselves inside one of Odaiba Girls' School's Arsenal development installations present in the area. From there, Sunao was able to watch as Amano Soraha delivered the final blow to the Nestless Ultra. Deeply inspired by her performance, Sunao would come to hold Soraha as her "eternal Idol."[9]
Aftermath
[edit | edit source]Not long after the events of the counteroffensive, the once retired junior high Lily Hayami Katsura would enroll into Odaiba by Momiji's encouragement. Due to Katsura's closeness with Momiji, Sunao came to see her as a rival figure,[8] though she and Katsura were still able to become friends.
Upon entering their first year of high school, Sunao, Chinami and Katsura would all be selected to integrate Legion Heorot Saints' under Momiji's command. However, unlike Chinami and Katsura, who went on to become part of the team's headliners, Sunao instead joined the Legion as a sub-member.

[edit | edit source]The Empathy Phenomenon
[edit | edit source]During one of their missions to neutralize one of the several Caves which had formed in Tokyo, the Heorot Saints encounter a Gigant-class Huge, and promptly begin performing the Neunwelt Tactic in order to destroy it. After making her pass, Sunao quickly notices something unusual about the situation, and rushes to meet the Saints' Lunatic Trancer user Saigo Kurena. Upon reaching her location, she finds Chinami struggling to properly use her Laplace to counteract the effects of the ambient Negative Magie emanating from the Huge.
The high concentration of Negative Magie causes Kurena to completely lose control of herself, attacking the other Saints members in a fit of madness. Sunao attempts to use her Rare Skill, Brave to subdue Kurena, but ultimately fails. The Saints continue to battle Kurena until Hirose Minato and Kishida Hanabusa of Odaiba's Legion Coast Guard arrive at the scene, with Minato using her Valkyrian Skirt Magie Reincarnation system to purify Kurena of Negative Magie. With Kureha under control, the Saints members rush to continue the Neunwelt Tactic, but are only able to regroup with Momiji, who was in possession of the Magisphere, after Funada Kiito of Legion Hronesnæsse takes it from her and fails to destroy the Gigant-class with it.
After the battle, the Saints and Hronesnæsse first years skip Igusa Subaru's mission review to have a tea party together. When discussing their encounter with the Gigant-class, the Lilies note how unusual it was for Kiito to have failed her finishing shot, and an inebriated Kawanabe Nazuna presumes that her failure was the result of her inability to work together with her sister Funada Ui, who had suffered an injury. Offended, Hronesnæsse member Shiba Tomoshibi instead attempts to argue that the Saints simply did not load the Magisphere with sufficient Magie to finish off the Gigant-class.
Later, the Saints hold a training session without Kurena, who had since been temporarily moved to Hronesnæsse in order to fill Ui's vacancy, as well as help her recover from the trauma of having attacked her teammates. Believing her failure to properly use her Laplace was to blame for Kurena's rampage, Chinami is particularly eager to better herself so that Kurena can fight at ease once she returns. Noticing this, Sunao encourages her to not overthink things, and focus on improving at her own pace.
The first years have another tea party, where they discuss the effects that Kurena's temporary move to Hronesnæsse had on the Legion. Noting how well she had been performing as Kiito's partner, Katsura ponders that, even after Ui recovers, Kurena may choose not to return to the Saints. An irritated Tomoshibi declares that she'll "not let that happen", leading all the first years to simultaneously conclude that Tomoshibi intends to drive Kurena out of Hronesnæsse by force. Worried, the first years abruptly stop their tea party to go after Tomoshibi.
Odaiba is alerted to another Cave, and the Saints, Hronesnæsse, Minato and Hanabusa deploy together to neutralize it. Upon arrival, they encounter the Gigant-class Huge Gigafloat, which possesses an energy shield that renders it invulnerable to regular attacks. And so, the two Legions agree to each perform a Neunwelt Tactic, with the Saints using their Magisphere to disable the shield while Hronesnæsse uses theirs to destroy the Huge's core. As the two Legions begin making their passes, the Gigafloat attempts to attack the Lilies with its light tentacles, and so, Sunao, Nazuna, Imamura Yukari and Kozue West are tasked with keeping them at bay.
Before the Saints can complete their Magisphere, the Gigafloat takes Momiji and Kawamura Yuzuriha captive in a surprise attack, bringing the pair inside its shield. Because Momiji was in possession of their Magisphere, the Lilies instead decide to use Hronesnæsse's to destroy the shield in order to rescue the two and retrieve the Saints' sphere. However, with Momiji and Yuzuriha, as well as Kiito and Kurena absent, the now mixed Legion team is forced to make their passes closer to the Huge in order to exploit its Magie intensity, exposing themselves to the high levels of Negative Magie surrounding it in the process.
The Saints and Hronesnæsse eventually succeed in destroying the Gigafloat's shield, allowing Momiji and Yuzuriha to escape. The Saints then resume building up the second Magisphere, and are eventually joined by Kiito, Ui and Kurena. Sunao, Chinami, Tomoshibi and Nagasawa Yuki, another Brave user, join the trio in making the final passes, using the combination of their support Rare Skills to aid them in completing the Magisphere. Finally, Kiito and Ui fire the finishing shot together, successfully destroying the Gigafloat.
The Snowdrop
[edit | edit source]Shortly after another joint mission by the Saints and Hronesnæsse, the first year Komai Sumire transfers to Odaiba Girls' School from Ambrosia Ladies' Institute, immediately joining Hronesnæsse as a temporary member. The first years of the two Legions invite her to one of their tea parties to welcome her, unaware that Katsura and Takehisa Nakaba had been tasked with covertly probing Sumire for information, as Momiji found the circumstances of her transfer suspicious.
The first years are quick to inquire Sumire on why she chose to join Legion Hronesnæsse, and she responds that she hadn't yet fully committed to join them, and in return, asks the first years to learn more about the Legion so she can make a better informed decision. This prompts the first years native to the Garden, including Sunao, to tell her the history of Legion Hronesnæsse as they know it, from their time as the Funada Reserve Corps to the present. With such a derailing in their conversation ultimately preventing Katsura and Nakaba from learning anything useful from Sumire, Kurena, speaking with Momiji after the fact, notes that Sunao would have been a much better pick for a spy.
Following the appearance of a Great Cave in Odaiba, the Saints and Hronesnæsse once again deploy together to neutralize it. They learn from Instructor Akira Blanton that the Cave's master is the Ultra-class Cihuateteo, which managed to survive their previous encounter with it during the Niigata Expedition by fusing itself with the core of the Undead Gigant-class Giant Zombie, subsequently granting all the Huge spawned by the Cave the Undead ability. And so, in order to avoid exhausting themselves fighting the larger horde of undead Huge, Kiito and Momiji instead agree to ignore the larger swarm and instead advance directly towards the Cihuateteo, only engaging the Huge directly near it.
The two Legions divide themselves in pairs, surrounding the Cihuateteo as they approach it, and Sunao pairs up with Kurena. The second year praises Sunao's performance, noting her to be a "gorgeous genius" like herself, though not exactly on her level. Kurena also takes the opportunity to tease Sunao by suggesting that she would've preferred to pair up with Momiji instead, leaving Sunao flustered. Eventually, all the pairs, sans Tomoshibi and Sumire, regroup after moving past the larger horde of Huge, and Akira instructs the two Legions to each perform a Neunwelt Tactic, as the resulting detonations would damage the Cihuateteo enough to expose its core, which Akira herself would destroy.
In order to avoid the Cihuateteo's tentacles, which could sap them of their Magie, the Saints and Hronesnæsse begin making their passes further away from it. Seeing Chinami's excitement to be fighting alongside Haru, Sunao urges her to maintain focus on combat, noting that with Tomoshibi absent, her Laplace was the single cornerstone of their operation. After rejoining Kurena, Sunao recalls her experiences during the Odaiba Counteroffensive, declaring that even if it is against an Ultra-class, she hopes to fight as valiantly as the witnessed the Second Division do on that day.
Both the Saints and Hronesnæsse eventually build up their Magispheres sufficiently, but as making the final passes would incur approaching the Cihuateteo, they split the task of neutralizing its tentacles between both of their Legions. Though incredibly exhausted, the Saints successfully destroy the tentacles they were in charge of, and Tomoshibi and Sumire arrive just in time for Hronesnæsse to destroy the final tentacle and complete their Magisphere. Finally, Kiito and Momiji fire their spheres in unison, and as predicted, the damage they cause leaves the Cihuateteo's core exposed, allowing Instructor Akira to destroy it.
Combat Style
[edit | edit source]Sunao is very highly regarded for the sheer number of Subskills she possesses: War God's Protection, Invisible One, Awakening, Consecration, Stealth and Whole Order. This particular combination of Subskills is noted to be the most ideal,[7] as War God's Protection allows Sunao to undertake commanding roles, and the other five, notably more combat oriented, greatly boost her versatility in the field by building on top of her Rare Skill, the support-focused Brave,[10] while also not providing any additional risk of Magie contamination.[11] As researching battle tactics is one of her personal interests,[3] she boasts a great degree of tactical knowledge,[12] and her CHARM wielding technique is described as steady and precise.[8]
In the field, Sunao is fully devoted to the role of the Saints' dedicated support player, being described as a "working bee"[8] and a "super-utility"[1] type of fighter. During the Neunwelt Tactic, Sunao is particularly proficient in "Off the Sphere" maneuvers, that is, assisting on the creation of pass trajectories for her teammates whenever she is not in possession of the Magisphere herself. Most notably, she can very quickly kill any Huge obstructing her teammates even without any orders from a commander, and because of this, she is very deeply trusted by the other members of her Legion.[13]
Because of her focus on acting as a support despite her high stats, Sunao's contributions will not often be reflected on her combat records.[14]
