Yokoyama Azusa (横山梓) is a second year Lily who attends Odaiba Girls' School. A member of Legion Heorot Saints, Azusa is a recurring character in the Odaiba series of stage plays.
Personality
[edit | edit source]Described as "self-confident and jovial",[1] Azusa's friendly and laid-back disposition is balanced by a level-headed and realistic outlook on things.[2] This is best exemplified in her relationship with her good friend Kawamura Yuzuriha, as while Azusa's usual lighthearted demeanor is on par with Yuzuriha's, she appears to be more conscious of when it is adequate to tone down her playfulness, and will sometimes be the one to encourage Yuzuriha to take things seriously.
Azusa is kind to her juniors, which, coupled with her down-to-earth personality and versatility in the battlefield, has earned her the admiration of many of them.[2] Azusa is similarly kind to her closest friends, particularly towards her childhood friend Hishida Haru, whom she notably stood in support of during the many hardships Haru endured in her time in Odaiba.
Azusa appears to be very aware of her own shortcomings, as though she did disagree with Funada Kiito's relentless treatment of her during her time in the Funada Reserve Corps, she was still able to recognize that her abilities as a Lily were, in fact, lacking,[3] and that she had been so far ignoring her flaws. Unlike many of her teammates, who attempted to take sole responsibility for the dissolution of their team, Azusa was able to realize that all of them had played a part in the events that led up to its end.[4]
History
[edit | edit source]Since early childhood, Azusa was a close friend of Hishida Haru, and supported her drive to become a Lily even in spite of Haru asthma frequently resulting in visits to the hospital.[1] Both Azusa and Haru were also close friends with one Imamura Sakumi, and as Haru grew particularly close to Sakumi, Azusa showed full support to their bond.[5][6] At the same time, Azusa and Haru also became friends with Sakumi's younger sister, Imamura Yukari, during this time.[7]
However, Sakumi, who had been battling a lifelong illness, ultimately passed away shortly before their first year of junior high. Prior to her death, Haru and Sakumi had made a vow to become Odaiba's finest Lilies and become the protectors of their Garden, and after Sakumi's passing, Haru swore that she would fulfill their vow in Sakumi's honor, and Azusa likewise swore to do everything in her power to help her achieve that goal.[8] In order to fulfill her promise to Sakumi, Haru began striving to become Odaiba's Student Council president.[9]
Joining the Funada Reserve Corps
[edit | edit source]During their third year of junior high, Azusa and Haru joined the Funada Reserve Corps, a Reserve founded and led by the Student Council president of the time, the strict Funada Kiito. Both Azusa and Haru would grow incredibly close to their teammates Kawamura Yuzuriha and Tsukioka Momiji,[10] and the Funada Reserve Corps went on to become one of the most accomplished teams of its kind, with their feats earning them worldwide renown.[11]
Azusa's performance, however, was wildly inconsistent, causing her to fall short of the high standards Kiito required of her team. This incited Kiito's ire, as she reportedly reprimanded Azusa with the words "Haru still can't fight to her fullest potential all because you aren't stepping up!".[12] Kiito's rebuke shook Azusa to her core, while Haru, meanwhile, was infuriated by Kiito's treatment of her friend.[13]
The Mutant Small-class Outbreak of Odaiba
[edit | edit source]Main articles: The Mutant Small-class Outbreak of Odaiba, Assault Lily: The Battle to Overcome
Following the sudden emergence of a massive horde of the Small-class variety of Irregular Huge known as the Soldier Ants, the Funada Reserve Corps deployed as the primary line of defense, as the Heorot Saints were absent at that point in time. The team's commander, Kon Kanaho, instructed the Reserve Corps to move to the defense of Odaiba's CHARM testing facilities after they finished their evacuations, however, they were unable to meaningfully bring down the number of Soldier Ants in the area, and ultimately found themselves completely surrounded.
Kanaho, desolate because of her mistake, attempted to sacrifice herself to create an escape route for their team, but this in turn caused her partner, Miyagawa Takane, to be mauled by one of the Huge after attempting to retrieve her. With Takane no longer in fighing condition and Kanaho tending to her wounds, the remaining members of the Reserve Corps fought relentlessly to keep themselves alive until the Heorot Saints finally came to their rescue.
Aftermath
[edit | edit source]Though all members of the Reserve Corps survived the event, Takane's injury left her chronically impaired, and she was no longer able to meet the standards of combat performance required by their team or even Odaiba as a whole. As Takane did not want to burden her teammates, and with Kanaho still overcome by guilt over her mistake, the pair ultimately decided to leave Odaiba, transferring to Kamba Girls' High School for the Fine Arts.
Kanaho and Takane parted ways with their teammates on good terms, however, their absence was still greatly felt in their team's performance, particularly Takane, who previously fought alongside Kiito and her sister Funada Ui in the AZ position. Kiito would then elect Azusa and Momiji, their most underperforming members, to fill Kanaho and Takane's vacancies, and Azusa, primarily a BZ fighter, was appointed to replace Takane in the AZ, as though her results in the field were very inconsistent, she was a very capable fighter when in proper form.[14] Despite this, however, Azusa's nature as a multipurpose fighter still prevented her from reaching the high combat efficiency Kiito demanded of her.[15]
Simultaneously, Kiito, as Odaiba's Student Council president, had also forcibly introduced a Garden-wide "power-ranked training curriculum" as part of her power-based ideological rule over Odaiba's student body. Because they were still underdeveloped as fighters, Azusa and Momiji suffered greatly under this policy, as they were reportedly "coerced into pushing themselves to death" by Kiito.[16] This not only stirred the ire of Haru and Yuzuriha, but also led to a divide within the Student Council itself, and with resistance to her methods coming not only from Odaiba's Students, but even some of her closest associates, Kiito ultimately resigned from her position as Student Council president. And as several of the Reserve Corps members also integrated the Council, the team was dissolved not long after.
Azusa, despite having suffered tremendously during the Reserve Corps' tumultuous final days, was ultimately able to become a proficient AZ Lily through the harsh training she was subjected to.[17]
The Odaiba Counteroffensive
[edit | edit source]Main articles: Assault Lily Wunder, The True Story of the Odaiba Counteroffensive
Azusa, Haru, Yuzuriha and Momiji were present in the multi-Garden Neunwelt Tactic Technical Conference being held in Odaiba when a Great Cave suddenly materialized in the district's Wakasu Park, producing a massive swarm of Soldier Ants which were soon followed by a colossal, Nestless Ultra-class Huge. As the Lilies present in the conference were the only primary means of defense available at the time, the event's host, Takegoshi Chihana, arranged them into five teams in order to properly counter the Huge's invasion. Both Azusa and Haru were appointed to the Third Division, whose main role would be assisting civilian evacuations in central Odaiba.
While evacuating the Toyosu and Shinonome areas of the city, the Third Division learned from the Second that the Fifth Division was no longer operational after encountering a Gigant-class Huge, as they'd been forced to retreat after the sudden appearance of a large horde of Soldier Ants soon after. Altea Alessandrini of the Second Division instructs the Third to move to the Fifth's aid, but after briefly establishing contact with the latter, they agree to only move out to their rescue after finalizing the evacuations in Shinonome.
The Third Division is able to reach Shin-Tatsumi bridge, where the Fifth had been surrounded, but they are soon completely overwhelmed by the swarm of Huge, which included several Large, Greater-Large and Gigant-class. One of the Gigant-class, clad in armor, begins approaching the Lilies, and the Third Division swiftly performs a Neunwelt Tactic. Azusa fires the finishing shot and, armor notwithstanding, effortlessly disposes of the giant Huge. Taking over the incredibly exhausted Fifth Division's role, the Third then continues on to dispose of every Huge at Shin-Tatsumi bridge.
After tending to the Fifth Division's injuries, the Third learns that several Huge, including five Irregular Gigant-class, were able to move past them and into areas with civilians still remaining. And so, the Third Division, joined by the Fifth Division members still in fighting condition, moves out to intercept them. The two teams quickly arrive back in Toyosu, where they locate three of the five Gigants attempting to breach through one of the city's defensive barriers. As the Third Division prepares to perform another Neunwelt Tactic, one of the Gigant-class, a Gravity Manipulator, activates its ability and stops the team dead in their tracks, allowing it to fully destroy the defensive barrier and granting the other Gigants access further into the city.
The Third Division quickly resumes their pursuit of the Gigants, and at that moment, Tokyo's Light Walls activate, leaving all the Lilies and civilians still in Odaiba locked outside of its enclosure until its Full Admission mode reaches its one hour time limit. And so, the Third Division is instructed by Instructor Akira Blanton to finish off the three Gigant-class before that happens, being provided assistance from the Odaiba Light Wall Defense Team.
Deciding to prioritize the other two Gigant-class, a pair of twins, the Third Division follows them through Toyosu. Both Huge possessed a field where within it, any shot they fired would miss, prompting the Lilies to turn their focus to finding a way to disable this ability. Haru, utilizing her Divine Possession Aberration, discovers that the fields are being generated from a specific portion of the twins' bodies, prompting the Defense Team and the Fifth Division members to join the Third Division in performing a double Neunwelt Tactic, which ultimately succeeded in destroying the two Gigant-class Huge.
With three Gigant-class still at large, as well as their accompanying horde of Huge spreading through Toyosu, the three teams decide to split their forces: the Light Wall Defense Team sets off to pursue the Gravity manipulator while most of the Third Division decides to clear out Toyosu from the Soldier Ants. In the meantime, Azusa and Haru, as well as Nishikawa Miharu and Nakabayashi Kaina of Irma Girls' High, are instructed to move to Toyosu Market in order to assist the military's defense efforts in the area.
The four quickly arrive at Toyosu Market, where roughly six thousand civilians were taking shelter under the military's protection. In order to prevent the Huge from reaching the area, all the nearby bridges had been destroyed with the exception of Fujimi bridge, where the four Lilies stationed themselves, accompanied by the military. They were soon met by a horde of Soldier Ants, and promptly set out to curb their advance into Toyosu. Struggling to effectively keep the Huge at bay, the four Lilies were soon horrified to see a Gigant-class Soldier Ant commanding the horde.
Desperate, the four Lilies attempted to halt the giant Ant's advance by themselves, but with the other members of the Third Division too far away to reach them in time, Haru ultimately realizes that she had no choice but to destroy the bridge. Azusa, quickly realizing the gravity of that action, pleads with Haru not to, noting how there were still several civilians and junior high Lilies in Ariake, on the opposite side of the bridge. Haru, however, insisted, as the alternative would be the deaths of all civilians in Toyosu Market. Azusa continues to try and reason with Haru, telling her that if she goes through with it, she would be breaking her promise to Sakumi, but Haru remained steadfast in her decision. As a last resort, Azusa desperately attempted to physically stop Haru as she moved ahead of the others, but she was ultimately unable to, and so, brought to her knees, Azusa tearfully watched as Haru brought Fujimi bridge down, and the horde of Huge commanded by the Gigant-class turned around and back into Ariake.
Afterwards, with the Light Wall set to reopen and admit the civilians at Toyosu Market inside its limits, Azusa, Haru, Miharu and Kaina regrouped with the Third and Fifth Divisions, as well as the Wall Defense Team in Toyosu. Learning that some of the remaining Fifth Division members would be joining them, the team of Lilies then moved to meet with the Second Division at the Tokyo International Exhibition Center, where they elaborated their final strategy to bring down the Nestless Ultra and its Great Cave, involving an 18 person Neunwelt Tactic performed by the members of the Second and Third Divisions.
With the Second Division advancing to Wakasu by Gunship, the Third and Fifth Divisions deployed by land ahead of time, hoping to draw the attention of the hordes of Huge in the area away from the park so that the Second Division could make landfall. After successfully making past the swaths of Huge in the area, the two Divisions encountered another Gigant Soldier Ant, prompting them to perform yet another Neunwelt Tactic in order to bring it down. The Third and Fifth Divisions arrived in Wakasu just as the Second had begun engaging the masses of Huge converging in the area, but shortly after their arrival, the Nestless Ultra itself began attacking the crowd of Lilies.
Noting that the Negative Magie emanated by the Nestless Ultra could potentially disarm their Magisphere entirely, the Lilies agree on performing their Neunwelt based on Momiji's Zero Top technique, allowing them a failsafe in the occasion of unfavorable conditions. With all Lilies in agreement, the Third and Fifth Divisions were the ones to set the operation in motion, making the Neunwelt's first passes while avoiding the Nestless Ultra's Negative Magie waves and the surrounding Huge in the process, before finally sending the Magisphere the Second Division's way. After making their passes, the Magisphere found its way to Yurigaoka Girls' Academy's Amano Soraha, who fired the supercharged sphere at the Nestless Ultra, destroying it completely.
Aftermath
[edit | edit source]Though Haru's destruction of Fujimi Bridge did not result in any casualties, her decision was still seen as reprehensible by many within Odaiba,[18] and she was barred from joining the Heorot Saints. Azusa, on the other hand, would be chosen to integrate the Legion, but she repeatedly declined the offer.[19] After Momiji assumed the position of Odaiba's Student Council president, she was able to ensure that both Haru and Azusa would be able to join the Saints under her leadership.
And so, Momiji, Yuzuriha, Azusa and Haru, as well as fellow former Funada Reserve Corps teammate Saigo Kurena went on to form the newest iteration of the Heorot Saints together. Though they did also invite Kawabata Hotaru, another former member of the Reserve Corps, she refused, citing that she wanted to join the Legion Kiito would form when she eventually returned to Odaiba.[20]
Azusa's experiences during the Odaiba Counteroffensive finally allowed the full extent of her talents to bloom, and because of it, Azusa came to the conclusion that Kiito had been correct about her shortcomings,[3] now understanding that she sought to draw out the inert potential that she'd seen in her.[4] Now a much more capable fighter, Azusa went on to develop exquisite teamwork with Haru in the Heorot Saints.[21]
The Liberation of Niigata

Note: this section follows the webnovel version of the story, and is therefore incomplete.
Upon entering their second year of high school, the Heorot Saints, as well as Kiito's newly formed Legion Hronesnæsse, set off together in an Expedition to Niigata, Japan, following a request by Amatsu Marei that they aid Legion Álfheimr and Ryuto Girls' Academy in taking down the Fafnir, one of the Seven Great Ultra-class Huge which had made its Nest in Niigata in the year following the Odaiba Counteroffensive. The Saints and Hronesnæsse initially arrived at the neighbouring prefecture of Tochigi, where Ryuto's Legion Kólga was locked in combat against a horde of Huge that suddenly emerged from Lake Chuzenji.
After rescuing Legion Kólga, the Heorot Saints were tasked with accompanying Legion Dúfa in retaking Niigata's harbour from the Huge's control, as Ryuto hoped to have a clear path towards Niigata's Sado Island, where the Fafnir was located. There, the Saints and Dúfa encountered the two-headed Gigant-class Restore Orthrus. The two Legions agree to each perform a Neunwelt Tactic in order to destroy both of the Gigant's heads, while at the same time Legion Hronesnæsse had joined Legion Kólga in returning to Lake Chuzenji, where they learned that the master of the Nest in the Lake, the Gigant-class Cihuateteo, had since evolved into an Ultra-class, forcing them to retreat.
Now with two Ultra-class Huge to contend with, the Lilies devised the strategy called "Mission Drachentöter", which entailed separating their forces into two teams, as they ascertained that the Fafnir and the Cihuateteo would eventually converge, hence requiring them to be neutralized simultaneously. And so, with Legion Álfheimr and the leaders of Ryuto's Legions of the Nine continuing with their operation to neutralize the Fafnir, The Heorot Saints and Hronesnæsse were tasked with defeating the Cihuateteo together.

The Singular Ability
[edit | edit source]Main article: Assault Lily: The Singular Ability
When the Heorot Saints deployed in an Expedition to Makuhari, Azusa and Haru, as well as the first year Kawanabe Nazuna were instructed to remain in Tokyo in order to aid Legion Hronesnæsse in the neutralization of a particular Cave, as their aces were also absent on another Expedition at the time. Soon after reaching Legion Hronesnæsse, the Saints are joined by Suzuki Chinami, who had also stayed in Tokyo without their knowledge. The two Legions learn from Yukari that another Cave had materialized in Shin-Kiba, and so immediately set off to preemptively destroy it.
While on their way towards the Cave, they reunite with Kiito, Ui and Shiba Tomoshibi, as well as Yuzuriha, who had accompanied them in their Expedition. Ui notes that several of the Huge they encountered on their way back resembled the Irregular types they've fought during their Expedition, those having been genetically engineered by GEHENA, leading Kiito to presume that that the Cave in Shin-Kiba could have been purposefully created for the sake of an experiment.
Suddenly, the two Legions are approached by a Gigant-class Huge, and the Saints members note how it seemed to behave similarly to the Huge they encountered during the Odaiba Counteroffensive. This stirs Haru's trauma of the battle, prompting her to set off on a rampage, determined to bring the Gigant-class down. Activating her Divine Possession, an enraged Haru continues to fight her way to the Gigant-class despite the Saints' members' attempts to reason with her, before finally being subdued by Hronesnæsse's Nagasawa Yuki. With Haru having broken her CHARM and Chinami having been hit by the Huge, Azusa advises the pair to fall back and seek care while the remaining Saints members and Hronesnæsse continue with their mission.
In the meantime, the Saints and Hronesnæsse discuss the Gigant-class they previously encountered, and noting that not only its presence caused their Magie to be drained much faster, but also noticeably slowed down their movements, the Lilies conclude that the Gigant-class was a variant of the Gravity Manipulator they'd encountered during the Odaiba Counteroffensive. Azusa notes how Haru in particular harbored very traumatic memories of that battle because of the consequences brought upon by her decision to destroy Fujimi Bridge, and the two Legions conclude that GEHENA purposefully sought to recreate the conditions of the Counteroffensive in order to elicit the trauma of the Lilies who participated in it. And so, the Saints members ask that they also join Hronesnæsse in taking the Gravity Manipulator down, hoping that doing so may help bring Haru closure.
Chinami and Haru rejoin the Saints just as they and Hronesnæsse locate the Gravity Manipulator. Now with a total of 14 Lilies present, the two Legions begin performing the Neunwelt Tactic together, with the Saints assisting Hronesnæsse in building up the Magisphere. As they make their passes, the Saints note that Haru is acting strangely, and upon receiving the Magisphere from Yukari, Haru begins to break down again, recalling how her decision to destroy Fujimi Bridge during the Counteroffensive left her, as well as Nazuna and several other young Lilies stranded with the horde of Huge led by the Gigant-class Soldier Ant.
As she attempts to continue fighting regardless, Haru completely loses control of herself once again, prompting the Saints members to attempt subduing her as she begins yet another rage-fueled rampage. Though Kiito is able to retrieve the Magisphere, Haru continues to aimlessly and mindlessly attack her surroundings. With Kiito and Ui taking it upon themselves to bring Haru under control, the Saints and remaining Hronesnæsse members continue the Neunwelt Tactic in the meantime.
After Tomoshibi is forced to retreat due to suffering an injury, the Lilies begin to struggle to complete the Magisphere in the absence of her Laplace to counteract the Magie drainage caused by the Gravity Manipulator. Chinami then constantly activates her Charisma in order to compensate for Tomoshibi's absence, eventually causing it to evolv into Laplace after she shields Nazuna from an incoming attack. With her newly awakened Laplace replenishing the other Lilies' Magie, the Saints switch to covering Hronesnæsse as they complete their Magisphere, and with Yukari firing the finishing shot, they successfully destroy the Gravity Manipulator.
The Empathy Phenomenon
[edit | edit source]Main article: Assault Lily: The Empathy Phenomenon
While the Saints and Hronesnæsse received the aid of Hirose Minato and Kishida Hanabusa of Odaiba's Legion Coast Guard in neutralizing the Gigant-class Huge Gigafloat, Azusa, as well as the Saints' sub-members Ito Urara and Uemura Warabi joined the rest of Legion Coast Guard in a separate mission.[22]
The Battle to Overcome
[edit | edit source]Main article: Assault Lily: The Battle to Overcome
During a joint deployment by the Saints and Hronesnæsse, the Lilies of both Legions note how there are several Irregular Soldier Ants among the swarm of Huge they're fighting against, which Kiito very quickly recognizes as the same type as the one they'd encountered two years prior during the Mutant Small-class Outbreak, a battle that turned out to be the Funada Reserve Corps' very last mission as a team.
Upon returning from their mission, the second year Lilies of both Legions gather for Igusa Subaru's mission review, where they discuss the Soldier Ants' reappearance. They note how they seemed to have evolved since their previous encounters with it during both the Mutant Outbreak, as well as the Odaiba Counteroffensive, and Azusa points out how their ability to evade detection by their Huge searchers could be the product of having developed the Stealth Subskill, their evolution ultimately meaning that they were able to colonize Odaiba by forming a Nest. Haru, on the other hand, notes how all of them possess traumatic memories from their previous encounters with the Soldier Ants, leading the Lilies to theorize that their sudden reappearance could be the result of another GEHENA experiment seeking to exploit their trauma.
Reminiscing of their past, Azusa, Haru, Yuzuriha and Momiji ponder on what could have been of them if the Funada Reserve Corps hadn't disbanded, with Azusa revealing that she thinks about the topic frequently. Yuzuriha recalls how much Azusa and Momiji suffered under Kiito's rule after Kanaho and Takane's departure, and Haru concludes that perhaps their disbandment had been for the best, as the pair was finally able to develop their own fighting styles after leaving the team.
The Saints and Hronesnæsse move out to Odaiba's Wakasu Park following the reappearance of the Soldier Ants. With a Gigant-class variant present, the Light Walls' Full Admission mode is triggered, leaving the Lilies with one hour to bring the Soldier Ants down. Just then, they are joined by Kanaho and Takane, who request that they fight alongside them, as they hoped to lay the ghosts of their past to rest. With all the former members of the Funada Reserve Corps present, Kiito proposes that they reform into their old team for the final time in order to finally settle their score with the Soldier Ants. With all Lilies in agreement, the Funada Reserve Corps reassembles, taking on the task of performing the Neunwelt Tactic against the Gigant-class before the end of the Light Walls' Full Admission mode while the remaining Lilies keep the swarm of Ants at bay.
As the Lilies begin to engage the swarm of Soldier Ants, Azusa and Momiji finally speak with Kanaho and Takane face to face. Noticing Kanaho's grief, Momiji insists that she is not to blame for the Reserve Corps' disbandment, as well as Kiito's subsequent treatment of her, and Azusa in turn tells Takane of how her desperation to fill her shoes and meet Kiito's standards drove her to hate herself for her failure to do so, and how Kiito's disappointment with the two of them would go on to affect the entire team. Recalling how it was the pushback against Kiito's power-based regimen that forced her to retire, Azusa and Momiji once again reiterate that Kanaho and Takane's departure was not what caused the Reserve Corps to come apart.
Finally, Azusa notes that she believes Kiito may have been right about her in the end, concluding that the blame for the Reserve Corps' disbandment falls upon all of them equally. Elaborating on her position, Azusa points out how it was those events that led her to stop ignoring her flaws, finally allowing her to master the AZ position. Beginning their Neunwelt Tactic, Azusa tells the others that they'll never be able to move forward if they're stuck thinking about what could have been.
The Reserve Corps' Neunwelt continues, and nearing its conclusion, the Lilies regroup. Just then, they watch in horror as Odaiba Instructor Inaba Mayumi is devoured by the Gigant-class Soldier Ant. Noting how she appeared to let herself be eaten by the Huge, the Lilies reach the conclusion that Mayumi purposefully sought to use herself to boost the Gigant Soldier Ant's powers, presuming her to be the one responsible for the Soldier Ants' appearance. The Lilies are then contacted telepathically by Mayumi, her consciousness having merged with the Huge's, and she explains to them that she truly hopes to save the world, noting that for that end, the power of Lilies and Huge must be joined together. Suddenly, however, the telepathic connection is severed, and the Lilies surmise that the Gigant Soldier Ant ultimately rejected her consciousness. With Mayumi seemingly dead, the Reserve Corps resumes performing their Neunwelt Tactic.
With their Magisphere completed, Kanaho and Takane fire the finishing shot together, finally destroying the Gigant-class Soldier Ant, but with the Ants' Nest still active, Kiito and Ui order the Reserve Corps to join the other Lilies in holding off their swarm while the pair proceeds ahead to destroy the Nest before the end of the Light Walls' Full Admission mode. In the aftermath of the battle, the Reserve Corps members reunite one final time in order to see Kanaho and Takane off as the pair prepares to return to their Garden, and as the two of them leave, the Funada Reserve Corps, having finally overcome their one final regret, disbands for good.
The Snowdrop
[edit | edit source]Main article: Assault Lily: The Snowdrop
Following a joint mission by the Saints and Hronesnæsse to destroy one of the several Caves which had formed across Tokyo, the first year Lily Komai Sumire transfers to Odaiba from Ambrosia Ladies' Institute, being temporarily placed in Legion Hronesnæsse as an interim member. The circumstances of Sumire's transfer elicit Momiji's suspicion, and so, she and Yuzuriha consult with Azusa, Haru and Kurena on investigating more about the Lily. Particularly noting how unusual it was for Sumire to transfer into Odaiba from a Garden of such high prestige and standards like Ambrosia, the second years decide to enlist the help of Hayami Katsura and Takehisa Nakaba, hoping that they could use one of the first years' regular tea parties to extract more information from Sumire herself.
The second years watch from afar as the Saints and Hronesnæsse first years invite Sumire to their tea party, becoming increasingly desperate as their conversation quickly derails despite Katsura and Nakaba's efforts to fulfill their mission, as well as almost having their cover blown by Maruyama Amane. Katsura and Nakaba ultimately fail to extract any meaningful information from Sumire, and reuniting afterwards, the second years admit their method was ultimately flawed, with Momiji proposing they continue investigating through other means.
At a later point, Odaiba receives reports of several Caves forming across its territory, which includes a Great Cave. The Lilies soon learn that the master of the Great Cave was the Cihuateteo, and Instructor Akira explains that it was able to survive their previous takedown of it in their mission to Niigata by absorbing the core of the Gigant-class Huge known as Giant Zombie, consequently granting all the Huge spawned by its Cave the Undead ability. In order to avoid needlessly exhausting themselves fighting the horde of resurrecting Huge, both Kiito and Momiji agree to ignore the greater swarm spawned by the Cave and instead focus solely on engaging the Cihuateteo and the Huge in its immediate vicinity.
The Lilies of both Legions settle on a plan to approach the Cihuateteo in pairs, and as they begin to move out, Azusa finds Haru caught between Nazuna and Chinami, with the pair fighting for the opportunity to be Haru's partner. Azusa offers herself to join the trio, noting that with her present, they would technically be two pairs, allowing Nazuna and Chinami to both stay together with Haru. The two Legions eventually regroup after successfully making past the larger swarm of Huge, however, Tomoshibi and Sumire are still absent. Akira instructs the Saints and Hronesnæsse to each perform a Neunwelt Tactic, in the hopes that the explosion would be damaging enough to expose the Cihuateteo's core, which Akira would destroy herself. In order to avoid the Cihuateteo's tentacles, which could sap them of their Magie, the Legions move further away from the Ultra-class Huge as they begin making their passes.
The two Legions build up their Magispheres with significant struggle, as they rely on Chinami's Laplace alone to counteract the Negative Magie surrounding the Cihuateteo in Tomoshibi's absence. As they would need to approach the Cihuateteo to make their final passes in order to make use of its Magie Intensity, the two Legions split between themselves the task of neutralizing its tentacles. Despite their great exhaustion, the Saints are able to destroy their half of the tentacles and complete their Magisphere, while Tomoshibi and Sumire are able to return just in time to allow Hronesnæsse to complete theirs. Momiji and Kiito then fire their finishing shots together, and as expected, the ensuing explosion exposes the Cihuateteo's core, allowing Akira to destroy it.
Combat Style
[edit | edit source]Azusa is highly regarded for her remarkable versatility.[2] Her primary position is the BZ, and she is considered an ideal lateral BZ Lily due to the set of Subskills she possesses: Rainbow Path, Promised Land and Whole Order, a combination noted to be rather uncommon.[1] Her speed and dexterity in the battlefield are noted to be highly above average, and she adopts a fighting style focused on suddenly appearing and disappearing out of the the Huge's sight, throwing them into confusion. This earned her the title of "The Phantom".[23]
Azusa takes the left side of the Saints' BZ arrangement, and primarily acts as a partner and counterbalance to Haru, who fights in the right side BZ. Their coordination in the field is of such high level that they are able to predict how the other will act in a given situation without even looking at them. Indeed, their remarkable ability to balance each other out is noted to be foundational to the Saints' stability in the field.[24] This synchronicity is shared with Momiji, the center BZ, with the trio's combination said to be the single most stable BZ arrangement in all of Odaiba Girls' School.[25]
Though her primary position is the BZ, Azusa is also a competent AZ Lily, a trait acquired from her time replacing Takane in the Funada Reserve Corps. During the Neunwelt Tactic, she and Haru usually spread out from their flank positions while performing highly dynamic passes, and Azusa in particular able to both set up passes from her position in the rearguard, as well as fire the finishing shots personally at the front lines.[26] Azusa also shows a remarkably high degree of coordination with Nazuna, who is positioned right above her as the left-side AZ. With both of them being technique-oriented fighters, their pass exchanges are described as "elegant", and their teamwork is noted to be one of the Saints' highlights.[27]
