Maruyama Amane

From Assault Lily Wiki

Maruyama Amane (円山周) is a third year Lily who attends Odaiba Girls' School. A member of Legion Heorot Saints, she is a recurring character in the Odaiba series of stage plays.

Personality

[edit | edit source]

Amane maintains a cool attitude at most times, being described as kind, but of few words.[1] At the same time, she is very outspoken when she does speak, voicing her thoughts and opinions in complete earnest, and even being confrontational when necessary. Amane shows a great level of care towards her friends and Legion mates; her presence in the Heorot Saints has been equated to that of a "guardian angel",[2] and she is likewise supportive of her longtime friend and fellow veteran Nagasawa Yuki.[3][4] A diligent Lily, Amane holds activities such as training or mission reviews with due importance,[5] and is noted to have martial arts training as one of her hobbies.[6] She notably held the prestigious positions of both captain of the Heorot Saints and Student Council president in the past.[7]

Despite her usual collected attitude, Amane will frequently accentuate the more charismatic sides of her cool personality in order to appear more charming, though she appears mostly oblivious to other Lilies being unfazed or even amused by her attempts to capture their attention.

History

[edit | edit source]

Amane, as well as one Tsuzuki Hisui,[8] were held as test subjects in a GEHENA facility, where they were subjected to Boosting experiments before being rescued by Odaiba Girls' School Instructor Akira Blanton, who brought the pair to her Garden.[9] After being rescued, however, Amane's body began showing extreme rejection to the enhancements granted by the Boosting procedure, leaving her on the brink of death, and so, Akira would take her to the Irma Girls' High's GEHENA lab for treatment. Though they were unable to completely reverse the Boosting procedure, they were still able to remove most of her Boosted Skills, leaving her with only passive abilities that slowed down her Magie decline and enhanced its concentration.[10]

At some point during her time in Odaiba, Amane met Nagasawa Yuki, as well as one Munataka Ushio, and the trio grew to be very close friends.[11] After entering her first year of high school, Amane became the captain of Odaiba's Top Legion, the Heorot Saints,[7] with Yuki and Ushio being likewise selected to the Legion.[12]

The Mutant Small-class Outbreak of Odaiba

Following a sudden, large-scale outbreak of the Irregular Small-class Huge known as Soldier Ants, the Heorot Saints were deployed in order to aid the Funada Reserve Corps, which had been stationed nearby, in fighting them. They were narrowly able to rescue the team of junior high Lilies, who had fought relentlessly to keep themselves alive after being completely surrounded by the swarm of Huge.[13][12]

The Kasumigaura Defense

[edit | edit source]

Main article: The Kasumigaura Defense

When a swarm of Huge led by a Nestless Ultra attempted to seize control of the Ibaraki Prefecture's Lake Kasumigaura in order to build a Nest,[14] several of Kanto's Gardens deployed their Legions in order to stop them, with Odaiba's Heorot Saints at the helm of the operation. Together with the local Garden of Tamatsukuri Girls' High School,[15] the multi-Legion operation was eventually successful in destroying the Nest.[16] Notably, this was Amane's final battle as captain of the Heorot Saints, and it was likewise the Saints' final deployment as Odaiba's Top Legion.[17]

The Makuhari Recapture

[edit | edit source]

Main article: Makuhari Recapture

The Heorot Saints were among the several Legions of Kanto elected to participate in the large-scale operation to reclaim the Makuhari territory in the Chiba Prefecture, having initially aided the local Garden of Makuhari Girls' High in conducting civilian evacuations after the Huge first seized control of the area. Though all civilians would be successfully brought to safety, the Huge would succeed in creating their Nest within the grounds of Makuhari Girls' High, forcing its Lilies to abandon it.[18]

After the fall of Makuhari, the Gardens involved began conducting preparations for the region's eventual recapture. During this period, Amane and Yuki met Yoshii Kasumiko of Irma, Izue Shinobu of Yurigaoka Girls' Academy, and Kishimoto Maria Mirai of Ludvico Private Girls' Academy, and the five developed a close friendship.[19] The preparations for the recapture operation lasted for over a year, with the actual battle taking place shortly after the Odaiba Counteroffensive.[20] The event saw Amane, Yuki, Kasumiko, Mirai and Shinobu, now second year Lilies, rise to great prominence for their contributions. Notably, the Heorot Saints undertook an operation to take down the Greater Large-class Huge Kinrin, which Amane fired the finishing shot against,[21] and Amane and Yuki in particular are also credited with delivering the final blow to the Gigant-class Huge leading the hordes of Huge in Makuhari.[19]

Aftermath

[edit | edit source]

Amane became very highly regarded for her service in both the Kasumigaura Defense and the Makuhari Recapture.[2] After returning to Tokyo, Amane stood in defense of Hishida Haru, a first-year Lily whom she particularly cared for, due to her controversial decision to destroy Fujimi Bridge during the Odaiba Counteroffensive, with her recorded words being "It was surely a difficult decision, but to have such an impossible dilemma in hands, yet still choose to keep those unable to fight away from the battlefield cannot have been the wrong choice. I would have done the same had I been in her place."[22]

Upon entering her third year of high school, Amane became a sub-member of the Heorot Saints, and Yuki and Ushio would instead leave the Legion entirely, choosing instead to join the newly formed Legions Hronesnæsse and Coast Guard, respectively. Nonetheless, the trio remained close friends. At this point, Amane, Yuki and Ushio came to be seen as living legends, each of them now taking part in one of Odaiba's three greatest Legions.[1]

The Empathy Phenomenon

[edit | edit source]

Main article: Assault Lily: The Empathy Phenomenon

During a mission to neutralize one of the several Caves which materialized across Tokyo, the Heorot Saints encounter a Gigant-class, prompting them to begin performing the Neunwelt Tactic. While making their passes, the Saints members note that their Magie is being depleted much faster than usual and surmise the Gigant-class to be an Irregular, which Amane concludes must possess the Dominator Skill. When the high concentration of Negative Magie causes Lunatic Trancer user Saigo Kurena to lose control of herself, the Saints split themselves in two, with one team working to subdue Kurena with the help of Hirose Minato and Kishida Hanabusa of Legion Coast Guard while the other carries on with the Neunwelt. After Minato and Hanabusa succeed in bringing Kurena under control, the remaining Saints members quickly move to regroup with the Neunwelt team, however, they arrive shortly after Funada Kiito of Legion Hronesnæsse fires the finishing shot instead, which ultimately fails to bring the Gigant-class down.

Afterwards, the Saints' and Hronesnæsse's second and third years attend Igusa Subaru's mission review session, where upon reexamining the previous events, they are able to ascertain that Kurena's rampage was caused by her particular susceptibility to the effects of Negative Magie, being a Boosted Lily and Lunatic Trancer user. Kurena herself is absent from the meeting, and the Saints members reveal that the experience of attacking her own teammates left her incredibly depressed, and that she refused to join them in training ever since.

Amane speaks with Yuki, who asks for her opinion on Kiito's failed finishing shot. Yuki is visibly disquieted by the Gigant-class having survived, and Amane attempts to reassure her, noting that it isn't unusual for the Neunwelt Tactic to fail, particularly considering they were facing an Irregular. Yuki, however, notes how they've had little trouble dealing with similar situations recently, and worries that Kiito and her twin sister Ui may be blaming themselves for this failure.

After Kurena is temporarily placed with Hronesnæsse in order to help her recover, Amane, Tsukioka Momiji and Kawamura Yuzuriha meet with Hronesnæsse's members to discuss her condition. The Hronesnæsse Lilies are particularly bothered by Kurena's presence, mainly due to her overreliance on Kiito affecting their cohesion as a team. Kozue West brings up the possibility that she might not return to the Saints even if she does recover, and as Yuki notes that defeating the Dominator Huge may not be enough to put her worries to rest, Amane concludes that they would need to find a way to eliminate those fears entirely. Momiji assures the Hronesnæsse members that they are making the proper preparations for Kurena's eventual return, asking that they continue taking care of Kurena until Ui can return to activity.

The Saints, Hronesnæsse, as well as Minato and Hanabusa deploy following the detection of another Cave. Upon arriving at its location, they are met with the Irregular Gigant-class Gigafloat, which possesses an energy shield that renders it invulnerable. As such, the two Legions agree to each perform a Neunwelt Tactic, with the Saints using their Magisphere to destroy its shield while Hronesnæsse uses theirs to destroy its core. The Saints and Hronesnæsse begin to make their passes, with select members of each Legion fending off the Huge's light tentacles in the meantime, but with the Gigafloat's presence greatly increasing the concentration of the surrounding Negative Magie, Amane struggles to continue fighting. She eventually collapses, but Minato purifies her with her Magie Reincarnation System, allowing her to continue fighting while keeping her distance from the Gigafloat.

As the battle progresses, Momiji and Yuzuriha are captured by the Gigafloat, being taken into its energy shield. As Momiji held the Saints' Magisphere, the Lilies switch tactics, now aiming to use Hronesnæsse's Magisphere to destroy the shield in hopes of retrieving the two. Though struggling with their exhaustion, the Lilies succeed in rescuing Yuzuriha and Momiji, and resume making their passes with the second Magisphere, eventually allowing Kiito to take a successful finishing shot and kill the Gigafloat.

The Snowdrop

[edit | edit source]

Main article: Assault Lily: The Snowdrop

Shortly after another joint mission by the Saints and Hronesnæsse, the first year Lily Komai Sumire transfers into Odaiba Girls' School from Ambrosia Ladies' Institute, joining Hronesnæsse as a temporary member. The circumstances of her sudden transfer arouse the suspicions of the Saints' second years, and so, they task Hayami Katsura and Takehisa Nakaba with secretly probing her during one of their tea parties. Amane finds the second years as they monitor the first years' conversations, and oblivious to their plans, almost causes them to be found out.

At another time, the Saints and Hronesnæsse deploy together following the appearance of a Great Cave. They are told by Akira that the Cave had been formed by the Ultra-class Huge Cihuateteo, which was able to survive their previous encounter with it in Tochigi by absorbing the core of the undead Huge Giant Zombie, subsequently granting the Undead ability to the other Huge spawned by the Cave. As such, Kiito proposes that they ignore the larger Horde of Huge, focusing only on the Cihuateteo and the Huge near it in order to conserve as much Magie as possible. Amane, however, is strongly opposed to the idea, noting that it may lead to casualties, but Kiito is certain that the remaining Odaiba Lilies would be able to handle the swarm in their stead, and with Momiji in agreement to her idea, the two Legions carry on with the plan.

With their strategy consisting in approaching the Cihuateteo in pairs, Amane approaches Nakaba just as the first year attempts to take Yuzuriha as her partner. As Amane intended to pair up with Nakaba, she instead proposes that they continue as a trio, noting that as they were deploying as a team of eleven, Yuzuriha was bound to be left out. Though Yuzuriha is initially reluctant, Amane manages to convince her, and Nakaba acquiesces. And so, the three of them begin advancing through the horde of Huge together.

The two Legions successfully regroup after making past the horde of Huge, however, Sumire and Shiba Tomoshibi remain absent. Instructor Akira instructs the Saints and Hronesnæsse to each perform a Neunwelt Tactic, noting that the impact of two Magispheres would cause enough damage to expose the Cihuateteo's core, which she would destroy herself. Keeping their distance in order to avoid the Cihuateteo's tentacles, the two Legions begin making their passes while waiting for Sumire and Tomoshibi to arrive.

The Saints and Hronesnæsse reunite after making most of their passes, but as they would need to approach the Cihuateteo to continue in order to better make use of its Magie Intensity, the two Legions agree to split between themselves the task of neutralizing its tentacles, but as they are unable to settle on how many of them each Legion should be in charge of destroying, Amane volunteers to take down the ninth and final one by herself, allowing the remaining members to each fight against an equal set.

The two Legions resume combat, and the Saints eventually succeed in destroying the five tentacles they were tasked with handling, though the high concentration of Negative Magie causes Amane to immediately collapse shortly after destroying hers. With their Magisphere complete, they move to regroup with Hronesnæsse as they continue to destroy their set. Sumire and Tomoshibi arrive just in time to allow Hronesnæsse to complete their Magisphere. After Kiito and Momiji fire their two Magispheres in unison, the Cihuateteo's core is exposed as predicted, and Akira swiftly destroys it.

Combat Style

[edit | edit source]

Amane's fighting style is centered around her Rare Skill, Shukuchi, and her Subskill Stealth, with the combination between them allowing her to appear and disappear from view in the blink of an eye. She is considered a pioneer of this style, which is described as making her "just like a ninja".[23] During the Neunwelt Tactic, she similarly uses her speed to lure the Huge away while still making highly precise passes.[24] Having reached the S-Rank of her Shukuchi, Amane is able to utilize the unique ability "The Gate",[25] which virtually grants her teleportation abilities.

As a third year Lily, Amane is also an excellent Duelist,[23] however, she is noted to struggle in the TZ position.[26]

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • Amane is very fond of old-school media. She likes reading period books,[6] and particularly enjoys watching period dramas, which she uses for combat reference.[27] She is noted to be a fan of the Mito Koumon series.[28]
  • Amane's favorite samurai from the Sengoku period is Maeda Toshimatsu.[29]
