Nosaka Jacqueline Kazane

Nosaka Jacqueline Kazane (野坂・ジャクリーヌ・風音) was a Lily who attended Ludvico Private Girls' Academy. She was the vice-captain of the Garden's Top Legion, the Temple Legion, during the Duelist era, serving under the leadership of Kishimoto Maria Mirai, the strongest Lily in Ludvico's history. Kazane was once the Schwester of Seto Veronica Ichika, whom she ultimately gave her life to protect.

Personality

Kazane was a notably measured individual, with her kindness and positivity balanced by a calm and composed attitude. As such, while she'd often be the one to raise her colleagues' spirits, Kazane would remain thoughtful and reasonable, earnestly weighing her friends' words against reality and choosing to not overly sugarcoat her words. Because of this, she enjoyed a good friendship and partnership with the greatly emotional Mirai.

Similarly, Kazane was a greatly encouraging figure towards younger Lilies, as shown when she first met the frightened middle school Lily Yoshii Kasumiko, assuring her that she and Mirai would have her back, and also when posthumously encountering a deeply depressed Saeki Julia Karen, with Kazane urging her to keep on fighting for Ichika's sake. Though gentle, her kindness was never to the point of coddling, however, exemplified in her rigorous training of her Schwester, Ichika, as well as during the Temple Legion's intervention during Irma Girls' High School for the Arts' Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Campus Defense, where despite leading the way during the battle, she encouraged the Lilies of Irma to fight for their own Garden.

History

During her time in junior high, Kazane met the Lilies Seto Veronica Ichika and Tachibana Theresia Nagisa. Despite attracting Nagisa's affection, Kazane would develop a particularly close relationship with Ichika, and she would often personally offer her combat lessons, sharing her discipline of "always listening to what your CHARM and the voices of the wind tell you" with the junior. During her final year of junior high, Kazane expressed her intentions to take the Schwester's Oath with Ichika, prompting Nagisa to transfer away from Ludvico, enrolling in the Swedish Garden Heimskringla Trädgård.

At an unknown point in time, Kazane met the prodigy Lily Kishimoto Maria Mirai, and after graduating from junior high into high school, the pair would be selected to integrate Ludvico's Temple Legion, with Mirai appointed as the captain and Kazane as the vice-captain. The pair was joined by Takatori Natalie Towa and Li Christina Susu.

The Bond with the White Rose - First Half

As a first year, Kazane joined the Temple Legion in providing reinforcements to the Lilies of Irma Girls' High School for the Arts after a Great Cave formed over their Kiyosumi-Shirakawa campus. In the absence of Irma's Top Legion, the Irminshines, their front lines consisted mostly of junior high and first-year Lilies. As such, many of them were pushed beyond their limits and had given in to exhaustion by the time the Temple Legion arrived. The Ludvico Legion took the lead in their counterattack, with Mirai and Kazane, as well as Towa and Susu, encouraging the junior Lilies to stand up and continue fighting.

During this battle, Mirai and Kazane met the first year Lily Yoshii Kasumiko, who, paralyzed with fear, was still unable to fight. The pair encourage Kasumiko to join her fellow Lilies in battle, assuring her that they'll provide her cover. And so, Kasumiko, who was deeply impressed by the Temple Legion's efficiency, sets off to the front lines, with Kazane and Mirai following her soon after.

With the Temple Legion's aid, the Irma Lilies were successful in destroying the Great Cave and driving away the remaining Huge. However, the event greatly affected Mirai, who was particularly heartbroken after witnessing so many Lilies grieving the loss of their partners. And so, Mirai, Kazane, Towa and Susu make a pact among themselves, promising that if the same situation ever comes to pass in Ludvico, they should always prioritize saving the lives of the Garden's Lilies over saving the Garden itself, with Kazane remarking that as long as Ludvico's Lilies survive, then the Garden's spirit can continue on.

Following the Kiyosumi-Shirakawa Campus Defense, Kazane and Mirai remained in contact with Kasumiko, eventually becoming close friends. By the pair's influence, Kasumiko was greatly inspired to fight in the AZ position, promising to herself to take down as many Huge as she possibly could in honor of the many Lilies that lost their lives during this battle.

The Makuhari Recapture

Some time after the Campus Defense, the Makuhari area of Chiba is completely overtaken by the Huge, with their occupation persisting into Mirai, Kazane and Kasumiko's time as second-year Lilies. And so, the trio were among the Lilies elected to begin preparations for the Makuhari Recapture, with Mirai and Kazane tasked with exterminating all the Huge and Caves occupying strategic locations in Makuhari's vicinity, while Kasumiko joined Yurigaoka Girls' Academy's Izue Shinobu with securing material supply lines and arranging the stationing of the participating Lilies.

However, Kazane would ultimately lose her life before the Makuhari Recapture properly began, being mortally injured by a Huge while protecting Ichika. Meanwhile, Mirai suddenly deserted Ludvico and disappeared entirely after being forcibly made into a Boosted Lily, and would eventually lose her life as well during this time. And so, Kasumiko took it upon herself to fight in their place during the recapture operation, and realizing that she is unsuited for the AZ position, she forfeited her promise to instead assume the TZ and BZ positions.

At some point, Kazane was retrieved by GEHENA, who effectively resurrected the Lily while conducting multiple Boosting experiments on her. As a result, Kazane lost all sense of identity after being resurrected, something that GEHENA took advantage of to fashion her into an unthinking underling, using her to dispose of any Lilies that may attempt to oppose them.

White Resistance ~The Blade of Truth~

Kazane is secretly deployed together with a Gigant-class Huge to battle the current iteration of the Temple Legion and the rebel Legion Ironside, in hopes that the ensuing battle will drain all Lilies in the battlefield of their Magie. Kazane reveals herself while the Temple Legion performs the Neunwelt Tactic, swiftly stealing the Magisphere from Hanaoka Angela Moe during her pass. Kazane fires the Magisphere at the Lilies, and though they are able to avoid it, the Temple Legion is briefly knocked down while the Gigant-class Huge flees. And so, Ichika and Nagisa stay back and engage Kazane, while the remaining Lilies set off in pursuit of the Gigant-class.

The two Legions hold their ground against a swarm of Huge while Sano Matilda Kokoro retrieves a second Neunwelt bullet from the Garden. However, Ichika's current protégée, Saeki Julia Karen, continuously fails to fight properly, causing her to break down in frustration, admonishing herself for her uselessness. Karen then sees a vision of Kazane, who inquires the first year on her relationship with Ichika. After Karen fails to answer, Kazane encourages Karen to not give up on herself, as she is the one Ichika chose to become her new Schwester. Karen, now motivated to return to Ichika's side, raises her CHARM once again, finally awakening to the Rare Skill Regista. Meanwhile, Ichika and Nagisa continue fighting against the resurrected Kazane, though unable to gain the upper hand, as not only she is now a Boosted Lily, but Ichika cannot bring herself to harm her former Schwester. Nagisa offers to finish off Kazane in Ichika's stead, but the latter insists on fighting Kazane herself, throwing away the Medalha Kazane had given her as she steels her resolve. Their battle continues, and Ichika realizes that Kazane possesses a Magie Reflector, concluding that the only way to defeat her is to aim for her heart.

After Kazane briefly falters after glimpsing Ichika's Medalha on the ground, Ichika takes the opportunity to hold her in place, allowing Nagisa to successfully take the shot. Kazane regains her consciousness in her final moments, and after Nagisa returns her Ichika's Medalha, Kazane once again places it around Ichika's neck, before dying for the second time in her Schwester's arms. Ichika is left furious at her Schwester's memory being defiled by GEHENA, and promises to spare no mercy to whoever was responsible. However, she is immediately shot down by Instructor Makabe Melania Sayoko in retaliation for killing Kazane. Karen reaches Ichika shortly after, and the two Lilies take the Schwester's Oath before Ichika's consciousness fades away.

While in her coma, Ichika reunites with Kazane in a dream, and the pair talk. Kazane tells Ichika that she always feared leaving her alone, but still wanted to protect her all the same, which ultimately led her to give her life to save Ichika. Kazane tells Ichika that it is not yet her time to come to her side, as she now has her own Schwester to look after, and saying her final goodbye to Ichika, Kazane encourages her to keep on fighting in her stead, with her spirit fading away as Ichika wakes up.

The Bond with the White Rose - Second Half

Following the appearance of a Great Cave over Ludvico's campus after Instructors Makabe Melania Sayoko and Toride Suzanne Reika disable the protective barrier surrounding the Garden, the Temple Legion, as well as Towa and Susu, take to fighting the invading Huge while helping in the evacuation of the Lilies still present in the campus. After the current captain of the Temple Legion, Ichinomiya Michaela Himari, exhausts herself while attempting to make her way back to the campus, she briefly sees a vision of Mirai and Kazane while unconscious, where the pair asks that she stand up and keep on fighting to protect the lives of Ludvico's Lilies.

With the help of Irma's Legion Irminshines and Legion Hakolberand, the Temple Legion succeeds in evacuating all the Lilies to safety, however, Ludvico's facilities are left completely destroyed, with the Huge still on the loose in the Garden's vicinity. While the first-year Lilies lament the destruction of their Garden, Towa and Susu find comfort in fulfilling the promise they made with Mirai and Kazane, with Himari echoing Kazane's words that while their Garden has been lost, the unity between Ludvico's Lilies remain unbroken.

Trivia

• Kazane's baptismal name, "Jacqueline", is the female form of the name "Jacques", which is a traditionally adopted form of the name "James" in French. As such, Kazane's baptismal name likely refers to Catholic Saint James the Great, one of the twelve apostles of Jesus.
• Kazane's teaching of "listening to the voices of the wind" is a play on her own name, as "Kazane" (風音) roughly translates to "the sound of the wind".
  • As such, Karen's vision of Kazane's spirit in White Resistance ~The Blade of Truth~ could be interpreted as Karen "listening to the voice of the wind", as the teaching had been passed down to her by Nagisa earlier in the play.
