Nakahara Mary Tomoyo

From Assault Lily Wiki

Nakahara Mary Tomoyo (中原・メアリィ・倫夜) is an Instructor and doctor serving under the Japanese National Defense Force. Originally a Lily and Battle Arsenal hailing from the American Boston Bravers Garden, she would later join Odaiba Girls' School as the Garden's practicing physician. Unbeknownst to most of the Garden's Lilies, Tomoyo also works as a researcher with ties to GEHENA, who is not hesitant to use her patients as subjects to her experiments.

Personality

[edit | edit source]

Tomoyo is, on the surface, a bright and positive woman. She treats her patients very kindly, and will even volunteer herself to listen to their worries and offer them counselling and encouragement during times of struggle. Tomoyo is well-mannered, and is a remarkably studied individual, with her knowledge encompassing not only subjects pertaining to her occupations as a either doctor, Lily, or Arsenal, but also extending to fields such as philosophy, cosmology or theology.[1] Presumably because of this, she has earned herself the title of "The Professor"[2]. Tomoyo is notoriously fond of quoting famous writers and philosophers.

On the other hand, Tomoyo is also incredibly cunning, actively making use of her approachable presentation and good reputation amongst her patients to manipulate and exploit them for her own benefit. Tomoyo's calculated nature often reaches the point of callousness, as exemplified when she fed intoFunada Ui's insecurities over temporarily ceding her place in Legion Hronesnæsse to Saigo Kurena, and ultimately arranging for Ui to kill her. On another occasion, she appeared to regret that the Irregular Huge Juggernaut was unable to completely decimate the members of Legion Hervör despite their encounter being completely accidental. In spite of this, Tomoyo will still retain her bright and well-mannered attitude when speaking with other Lilies, and as such, she comes off as smug and arrogant to those privy to her true character such as Shiba Tomoshibi.

A particularly interesting trait of Tomoyo's is her dismissive attitude towards Boosted Lilies, no matter if they are remarkably powerful or if they originate from more ambitious experiments such as the 13 Sisters Project. Tomoyo considers them mere "imitations" (紛い物) for appropriating the power of the Huge for themselves, and instead, she more greatly values Singular Lilies for possessing remarkable abilities that match or even surpass those of Boosted Lilies, while still remaining "untainted" by any Boosting procedure.

History

[edit | edit source]

During Tomoyo's time as a Lily, she served as a Battle Arsenal under the Boston Bravers Garden of the United States. Having reached the S-Rank of her Rare Skill, Hawk's Eye, she was a highly distinguished fighter of the Dueling generation. During her time of active duty, she was noted to have fought alongside Akira Blanton[3] and Inaba Mayumi.[4] Tomoyo became very famous not only within the Boston Bravers, but in the entire country, and is particularly renowned for playing a crucial part in repelling the Gigant-class Huge Cihuateteo.[5] Tomoyo was also a top-rate Arsenal, and most notably participated in the development of the Valkyrian Skirt Magie Reincarnation System.[6]

After graduating from the Boston Bravers, Tomoyo decided to return to Japan, as she "wasn't very fond of [American] cuisine".[5] She became a licensed physician, and also acquired surgeon qualifications.[7] At one point, she was admitted into Odaiba Girls' School as the Garden's resident doctor,[8] but while her primary activities were in the medical field, she also greatly influenced Odaiba's Arsenal Department, with many of the more innovative pieces of equipment used by the Garden's Lilies owing their adoption to her.[6]

Due to her friendly disposition and her eclectic knowledge, Tomoyo would go on to become a very popular and well trusted figure among Odaiba's students. She notably offered Kawanabe Nazuna advice when the Lily had become depressed,[1] and has similarly counselled Funada Kiito during her time as a junior high student, with Kiito herself admitting at a later point how much of a lasting effect Tomoyo's words had on her.[9]

At an unknown point in time, Tomoyo became affiliated with GEHENA, and is rumored to have risen to a very high rank within the organization.[10]

The Fateful Gift

[edit | edit source]

Tomoyo was one of the figures overseeing Toda Eulalia Kotohi's missions as an undercover field agent during GEHENA's experiments with Gigant-class Huge in Tokyo. While ecstatic that their previous experiments with a Gigant-class Huge in Shimokitazawa had proved fruitful, Tomoyo sternly reminds Kotohi that "failure will not be tolerated" as they move to the next step of their plan. GEHENA would later unleash a pair of Gigant-class Huge in Shinjuku, and so, several Legions of Tokyo, as well as Team Hitotsuyanagi from Kamakura deployed to exterminate them. Particularly seeking to retrieve the born Boosted Lilies Kishimoto Lucia Raimu and Sasaki Ran, GEHENA would once again deploy Kotohi in order to monitor the Legions and collect the pair of Lilies.

However, a third Gigant-class Huge would later appear, and as Kotohi was unaware of this, she concluded that GEHENA intended to ensure that all Lilies present, including her, would be killed so that no witnesses to their experiment would survive. After the Legions successfully destroyed all three Gigant-class Huge, Kotohi contacts Tomoyo for the final time, reporting that she had been ultimately unable to retrieve Raimu and Ran, and bitterly telling her that as all the Lilies that participated in the battle were able to survive, GEHENA's plans will no longer proceed as they intended it to.

The Singular Ability

[edit | edit source]

After speaking with Kotohi, Tomoyo is visited by Imamura Yukari in order to treat an injury she suffered during one of Legion Hronesnæsse's missions to neutralize a Cave. Because Hronesnæsse's aces Kiito, Ui and Tomoshibi are currently away on an Expedition, the remaining members of the Legion have struggled to take down the Cave, and Yukari attributes them leaving without warning to her own inexperience and unreliability. Tomoyo, however, assures her that they only left because they believed her and the other members of Hronesnæsse would still be successful even in their absence. Despite Tomoyo's encouragement, Yukari continues to belittle herself, as she believes that she is an inferior fighter to her late sister, Imamura Sakumi, and that she did not earn her place in Legion Hronesnæsse. In response, Tomoyo encourages Yukari to stop comparing herself to Sakumi and find her value as her own person, noting that being a member of a Legion as powerful as Hronesnæsse is reason to be proud of herself. Before Yukari returns to the battlefield, Tomoyo instructs her to tell the remaining Hronesnæsse members of a newly formed Cave she was able to detect in the Shin-kiba region.

Tomoyo is later visited by Heorot Saints members Hishida Haru and Suzuki Chinami. During the battle in Shin-kiba, Haru had inadvertenly launched into a rampage by way of her Aberration, Divine Possession, after the circumstances of the battle caused her trauma from the Odaiba Counteroffensive to resurface. When Chinami, a Charisma user, tried to bring her back to her senses, she was hit by a Huge attack that left her unable to produce any Magie. Haru's CHARM, the Caladbolg, was left severely damaged at the end of her rampage, and so, Haru frantically pleads with Tomoyo to have it repaired so that she can return to the battlefield as soon as possible. Tomoyo agrees, but directs Haru and Chinami to recover inside the medical bay's capsules in the meantime.

Tomoyo does not finish her repairs of the Caladbolg by the time Haru and Chinami recover, and so, she has Haru temporarily use the Galateia, an experimental CHARM that does not require a Contract. Unbeknownst to Haru, the Galateia is a Boosted CHARM, which Tomoyo handed her so that she could further observe the effects of Haru's Divine Possession. And so, Haru once again loses control of herself shortly upon returning to the battlefield, and as Kiito and Ui take it upon themselves to subdue her, they leave Hronesnæsse under Tomoshibi's supervision as they fight a Gravity Manipulator Huge identical to the one encountered by the Third Division during the Counteroffensive

Having promised to Kiito that she would not allow for a single life to be lost, Tomoshibi fights relentlessly while leading the Lilies' offensive against the Gravity Manipulator, and due to being constantly hit by the Huge, she relies heavily on her Regenerator ability to keep fighting. However, after shielding Nazuna from an incoming attack, Tomoshibi is left in a particularly precarious state, and so retreats to the medical bay, where she meets Tomoyo. Tomoshibi is immediately dismissive of Tomoyo's apparent concerns over her wounds, and instead reveals to the doctor that she knows that GEHENA's true intentions with this experiment was to make Haru, who is a Singular Lily due to being able to use Divine Possession, and the Funada Twins, who are Singular Lilies due to their Empathy Phenomenon, clash each other. Tomoshibi loses consciousness due to her wounds, and as Tomoyo holds the Lily in her arms, she expresses that if someone truly arranged for this situation to unfold, she will protect them from whoever it is.

The battle concludes, and both Hronesnæsse and the Heorot Saints return safely to Odaiba. Tomoshibi speaks with Tomoyo once again, telling her of how, as the Funada Twins fought Haru, multiple abnormal phenomena took place around them, those being identical to the "Emergence" phenomenon that happens when a Huge Nest first materializes. Once again, Tomoshibi presumes Tomoyo was involved in engineering the circumstances of that battle, and wonders if she got the results she wanted from the experiment. Tomoyo feigns ignorance to the Lily's accusations, but after Tomoshibi leaves, Tomoyo expresses her relief that both Haru and the Funada Twins returned safely, deeming them "precious individuals."

The Empathy Phenomenon

[edit | edit source]

Main article: Assault Lily: The Empathy Phenomenon.

Tomoyo is joined by Inaba Mayumi, who had recently been appointed as a counsellor in Odaiba, as she watches Legion Heorot Saints neutralize one of the many Caves which had been recently forming across Tokyo. Tomoyo is suspicious of Mayumi's sudden arrival, and wonders if she was the one responsible for creating the Caves. Though not offering any answers, Mayumi responds that "exciting things are about to unfold". At a later point, Tomoyo recalls one of her conversations with Kotohi, appearing particularly irritated at the Lily's eagerness to carry out GEHENA's plans despite being "a mere imitation".

Because Ui had suffered an injury during her and Kiito's latest Expedition to Tokyo, Tomoyo personally takes charge of overseeing her recovery. She tells Ui that it might take her around a full month before she fully recovers, much to the Lily's dismay. While Tomoyo encourages her to take the opportunity to rest after having participated in so many battles, Ui is still upset to learn from Tomoyo that her absence from Hronesnæsse may lead to a decrease in the team's efficiency. Ui is left restless at the prospect of not being able to rejoin her sister soon, but Tomoyo once again urges her to focus on her recovery so that she can more quickly do so.

Tomoyo and Mayumi oversee a special training session being held by Legion Hronesnæsse, with Saigo Kurena of the Heorot Saints having been placed as Ui's temporary replacement by Mayumi's suggestion, as the Lily had fallen into a depression after attacking her own teammates while under the effects of Negative Magie. Later, Tomoyo speaks with Ui once again, who appears somewhat insecure after seeing Kiito perform well during training even in her absence. Tomoyo attempts to ease her fears, arguing that Kiito is simply doing her best for the sake of her friend Kurena, noting that while her and Kiito's activation of the Empathy Phenomenon has indeed helped Kurena recover, its effects were still inferior to Kiito and Ui's Empathy Phenomenon. Tomoyo argues that Ui is the only one actually able to bring out Kiito's potential, and so, once again urges her to focus on her recovery so that she may return to her sister's side.

However, as Ui continues to watch Kiito and Kurena together, her anxieties are only amplified, as she grows increasingly afraid at the prospect of losing her place as Kiito's partner. Yet again, Tomoyo attempts to convince Ui that Kurena could never replace her, but suggests to Ui that, if she perceives Kurena to be in her way, then she should simply "get rid of her"

When Hronesnæsse and the Heorot Saints leave on a mission to neutralize an Irregular Large-class Huge, Tomoyo holds another counselling session with Ui, and after the Lily notes that the Irregular Huge might have been deployed as part of a GEHENA experiment, Tomoyo ponders if their intention is to test the extent to which Kiito and Kurena can activate the Empathy Phenomenon. But while Tomoyo once again assures Ui that the effect they produced is inferior to the one created by Kiito and her, Ui posits that it is only a matter of time until they reach her and Kiito's level. In turn, Tomoyo theorizes that GEHENA might seek to make Kiito into a Boosted Lily in order to bolster the effects of hers and Kurena's Empathy Phenomenon, and tells Ui of the many dangers a Lunatic Trancer user may face should they undergo the Boosting procedure. Ui is completely distraught at hearing this, and Tomoyo further feeds into her fears, speculating that even her injury might have been part of GEHENA's ploy to bring her apart from Kiito. An enraged Ui begs that Tomoyo takes her to her sister, and in response, Tomoyo tells Ui that she needs 'only a little push' so that she can fight again, and after utilizing her Magie on her, Ui falls unconscious.

Tomoyo brings Ui to Kiito and Kurena's location, and an incredibly irate Ui immediately begins attacking Kurena, intent on killing her as she recalls Tomoyo's words. Having been similarly manipulated by Mayumi, Kurena also fights back against Ui while a disheartened Kiito attempts to stop both of them. Ui's mental state continues to deteriorate, and Kiito takes Kurena's place in fighting against her sister, ordering the Saints Lily to continue pursuing the Irregular Large-class in the meantime. As Kiito and Ui's fight continues, the "Emergence" effects once again begin to take place around them, but after a long and intense battle, Kiito is eventually able to get through to her sister, and as the two twins hold each other in an embrace, they finally unleash their Empathy Phenomenon in its full might once again.

In the aftermath, Tomoyo is approached by Tomoshibi just as she is about to depart from Odaiba entirely. Tomoshibi tells her of how the Emergence phenomenon happened yet again during Kiito and Ui's fight, once again presuming that to have been Tomoyo's goal. While still withholding her true intentions, Tomoyo tells Tomoshibi of how she hopes that Lilies "untainted" by the power of the Huge, such as the Funada Sisters, will be the ones to truly save the world, as pure humans hold a power in their souls and emotions that the Huge lack. Tomoyo reveals to Tomoshibi that while her experiment was close to succeeding, it ultimately still needed further research, and assures the Lily that her plans do not involve "imitations" like her. Tomoshibi, in turn, asks why Kurena was targeted, and Tomoyo clarifies that she had nothing to do with whatever Mayumi's plans were, however, before she leaves, Tomoyo tells Tomoshibi that Mayumi was, in fact, a researcher at GEHENA the Kuramayama Labs, where Tomoshibi was originally experimented on, and that she is "someone you've killed once before".

Last Bullet

[edit | edit source]
Main Story: Chapter Two
[edit | edit source]

Main article: An Enigma in Flames

Following Aizawa Kazuha's encounter with the Irregular Huge Juggernaut, Tomoyo and another GEHENA researcher use a recording of the battle to analyze the Juggernaut's present capabilities. The researcher tells Tomoyo that the Huge shot past every single one of their predicted parameters, and that it had likely still not reached its fullest potential. In turn, Tomoyo theorizes that because the Juggernaut had not yet settled into a definitive form, it would likely continue to grow more powerful as it matured. This elicits the researcher's concern, who expresses to Tomoyo her worries that they had been "standing in defiance to God Himself" with their research, but Tomoyo tells the researcher that God had long abandoned them, and as such, "falling into the devil's ways" was their only choice.

New Chapter

[edit | edit source]

Main article: Assault Lily: New Chapter

Following the simultaneous emergence of four Nests near a fifth, Category S Nest in the island of Izu Oshima, Tomoyo, now integrating the National Defense Force, was moved to the island's walled city as a researcher and advisor. After the arrival of the Nest Survey team in Izu Oshima and their first encounter with the Flowers of the End, Tomoyo reunites with Tomoshibi, who is displeased to meet the doctor once again. Tomoyo notes how Tomoshibi very nearly turned out a remnant as the Flowers, and the Lily presumes Tomoyo to have been the one to dispatch them. However, Tomoyo once again insists that she has no interest in "imitations", and tells her that this time, she is on their side. Tomoshibi inquires Tomoyo on the origins of the Lilies they encountered, and while the doctor does refer to them by the title of "Flowers of the End", hinting that she does know their origin, Tomoyo leaves without providing further answers.

After the sudden disappearance of Hasebe Touka, Tomoshibi searches for Tomoyo again, presuming her to be the one responsible for abducting Touka due to the latter's possession of seven Subskills, making her a Singular Lily. Tomoyo, however, assures Tomoshibi she wouldn't treat such a valuable Lily so cruelly, and insists she had nothing to do with it. The pair is joined by the remaining members of the Nest Survey Team, and Tomoyo reveals to them that the Flowers of the End, as well as the Nests that sprouted in Izu Oshima are, in fact, part of a ploy by GEHENA's extremist faction, who wished to continue their research at any costs following the fall of Ludvico Private Girls' Seminary.

Tomoyo tells the Survey Team that she was able to track down Touka's location to be in the island's undercity, and noting that she is emitting not positive, but Negative Magie, Tomoyo presumes she was forcefully corrupted with a large amount of it, which might eventually turn her directly into a Huge. Kiito suggests that they chase after Legion Sanngriðr, who had left to search for Touka, but Tomoyo tells them that she was able to detect a second source of Negative Magie, which she presumes was responsible for the emergence of the four Nests, and as such might lead to the formation of a Death Zone, as well as furthering the growth of the Nests beyond the Lilies' ability to destroy them. Concluding this signal to originate from a singular Huge created by GEHENA, the Survey Team agrees to instead move to neutralize it as soon as possible.

After Legion Sanngriðr succeeds in retrieving Touka, Tomoyo visits her Schild, the Boosted Lily Luise Ingels, who had fallen into a coma due to being exposed to excessive Negative Magie originating from the Nests and the Flowers of the End. Luise is eager to see her Schutzengel soon after awakening, but Tomoyo insists that she still needs rest, and assures her that as Touka is a Singular Lily like no other, she will not allow anyone to lay their hands on her.

Tomoyo later meets with Kiito, Ui and Tomoshibi after they seemingly succeed in destroying the Irregular Huge they had previously detected, which was revealed to have been an evolved form of the Juggernaut. While Kiito is optimistic that this would stop the Nests' growth, Tomoyo explains that as they were not yet destroyed, the possibility of a Death Zone formation still remains. Kiito and Ui express their gratitude for the information Tomoyo provided them with, but Tomoshibi is still convinced that Tomoyo had a hand in engineering their situation, and threatens her that "there will not be a next time". In response, Tomoyo once again insists that "imitations" like her will not be the ones to save the world.

Last Bullet: Chapter Four
[edit | edit source]

Main article: A Blue Rose in Dark Waters

After the Boosted Lily Mori Tatsuki fell ill due to the effects of the four Nests, Tomoyo was the one to offer her first aid. Noticing the behavior of the Nests, Tomoyo predicts the Death Zone's formation to be on the horizon, a concern that is later exacerbated by the appearance of the Charybdis, one of the infamous Seven Great Ultra-class Huge.

Later, noticing that the Boosted Lily Tada Shiera had also arrived in the island, Tomoyo ponders whether she had been drawn to the region due to her cells, or if her presence there was a mere coincidence. Tomoyo would later remark that Shiera and Tatsuki made for a "rather uninteresting couple."

Tomoyo later tended to Amano Soraha's wounds after her encounter with the Charybdis.

New Chapter 2

[edit | edit source]

Main article: Assault Lily: New Chapter 2

Though the Nest Survey Team and Legion Álfheimr were able to repel the Charybdis, as well as the human-like Huge it created, Rusalka, they failed to completely kill the pair, and so, Tomoyo once again expresses her worries that a Death Zone will soon form in the region. Tomoyo meets with Kiito, Ui and Tomoshibi following their encounter with the Charybdis, and the trio are equally restless after learning that the Nests are still continuing to grow. After Ui points out that something else must be luring the Huge to the region to further the Nests' development, Tomoyo reveals to the trio that the Juggernaut had survived their previous encounter. Eventually, the four Nests reach Category A, and so, Tomoyo's fears come to pass as a Death Zone finally disperses in Izu Oshima.

Tomoyo succeeds in tracking down the Juggernaut's location, however, the Survey Team learns that it had since fused with another Small-class Huge, bolstering its capabilities. Due to the high concentration of Negative Magie created by the Death Zone, the Survey Team concludes they must defeat the Juggernaut quickly, while keeping their Magie consumption at a minimum, and Tomoyo tells them that, in order for the Juggernaut to be defeated beyond any chance of recovery, they must destroy the part of its body that allows it to continue reviving itself, and only then destroy the rest of its body in full.

After the Survey Team succeeds in exterminating the Juggernaut, Tomoyo watches on as they join Legion Sanngriðr in once again fighting the Flowers of the End, expressing her disdain at Kojima Nadeshiko for subjecting already withered Lilies to further experimentation. She is met by Tomoshibi, who notes how, when Luise and Yamaguchi Chihiro touched each other, they produced a phenomenon previously observed in Princesses of the Huge when they hold hands. Mary reveals that Luise and Chihiro had been Boosted utilizing cells from the same Huge, and so, they are able to resonate with each other, an ability further bolstered by both of them showing a disposition into evolving into Princesses themselves. Tomoyo theorizes that Chihiro has purposefully induced this state in order to forcefully usurp Luise away, in her ploy to take revenge on Touka.

Later, Tomoyo and Nadeshiko watch as the Survey Team and Sanngriðr are joined by the Flowers of the End, who were finally able to regain their consciousness, in fighting against Rusalka. Though still dismissive of the Flowers' capabilities as Boosted Lilies, Tomoyo concurs that Rusalka's extermination is a higher concern, appearing particularly disgusted at the notion of a Huge gaining sentience. Nadeshiko, in turn, advises Tomoyo to steer clear of her plans, insisting on her ideal that the Princesses will be the true saviors of this world.
