Assault Lily: The Singular Ability
Assault Lily: Odaiba Girls' School Edition -The Singular Ability- (アサルトリリィ・御台場女学校編 -The Singular Ability-) is a stage play created by AZONE International and acus. Taking place after The Fateful Gift, it is the first of four stage plays focused on Odaiba Girls' School and their two strongest Legions, Legion Hronesnæsse and Legion Heorot Saints.
The Singular Ability ran from August 20 to 29, 2021 at Kinokuniya Hall in Shibuya, Tokyo. A sequel, The Empathy Phenomenon, premiered on February 17, 2022. Though minor in nature, the play also shows loose connections to the Assault Lily: Last Bullet event Transcendent Arsenal Hearts.
Plot[edit | edit source]
Prelude[edit | edit source]
Odaiba Instructor and physician Nakahara Mary Tomoyo watches over Legion Hronesnæsse while they’re out on a mission. She receives a transmission from Ludvico Private Girls’ Academy’s Toda Eulalia Kotohi, who informs her that though the experiments conducted by GEHENA in Shinjuku utilizing Gigant-class Huge were successful, she failed to retrieve the two Lilies she was ordered to collect. Kotohi informs them that all Lilies present in the battlefield, including her, managed to survive.
Tomoyo is visited by Hronesnæsse member Imamura Yukari in order to tend to her wounded arm. Tomoyo speaks with Yukari about the Cave they’re currently tasked with neutralizing, with Hronesnæsse’s members struggling to destroy it quickly due to their aces, the twins Funada Kiito and Funada Ui, as well as Shiba Tomoshibi, currently being out on an Expedition. Yukari blames herself and her inexperience as the reason that Kiito and the others left them without saying a word, but Tomoyo instead argues that they did so because they trust her and the remaining Hronesnæsse members to deal with the current Cave by themselves.
As an example, she points out how Kawamura Yuzuriha, the vice-captain of the Heorot Saints, has also left to Shinjuku, trusting that the rest of her Legion will be successful in their current Expedition to Makuhari. However, the Saints members Hishida Haru, Kawanabe Nazuna and Yokoyama Azusa were elected to stay behind and provide Hronesnæsse with backup, which leads Yukari to once again view herself as not needed. Meanwhile, the Saints member Suzuki Chinami tails her teammates as they move to regroup with Hronesnæsse.
Kiito, Ui, Tomoshibi and Yuzuriha argue amongst themselves as they make their way back to Odaiba following their Expedition. Having faced multiple Irregular Huge so far, Yuzuriha takes particular notice of their unusual numbers, as well as their emergence locations and movement patterns, as it largely resembles the behavior displayed by the Huge she encountered during the Odaiba Counteroffensive. Annoyed at the Counteroffensive being mentioned yet again, Kiito and Ui are completely dismissive of her concerns.
Prologue[edit | edit source]
Tomoyo takes her time healing Yukari's wound, and as she does so, the latter wonders if she’ll still have a place in Hronesnæsse if the time comes when she is too severely injured to recover. Though Tomoyo attempts to comfort her by saying that every Lily fears the battlefield to some extent, Yukari points out that her late sister, Imamura Sakumi, was a much better fighter than she is. Tomoyo once again tries to raise Yukari's spirits, arguing that she has her own strengths apart from Sakumi’s, but Yukari is still unsure, as she believes that she wouldn’t have made it into Hronesnæsse if Sakumi had not succumbed to her illness, believing that others see her as a mere shadow of her sister. After Tomoyo finally finishes healing Yukari’s arm, she urges the Lily to stop trying to match her sister, and be more proud of herself for the individual she is.
Legion Hronesnæsse meets with the Saints members as they continue their offensive against the Huge pouring out from the Cave. Haru is particularly worried after learning that Yukari had injured herself, but Igusa Subaru assures her that her wounds were not severe. Chinami catches up with the other Saints members, disappointed that Haru, whom she pines for, had left her behind despite bringing Nazuna along. Azusa points out that only three of them were ordered to provide backup to Hronesnæsse, but Chinami tells them that Tsukioka Momiji granted her permission to join them as well.
The Lilies are soon rejoined by Yukari, and Haru is relieved after ascertaining that her wounds weren’t serious, causing Chinami to be jealous. Yukari tells the Lilies of how she was informed by Tomoyo that a small Cave appeared in Shin-kiba, Koto, which went undetected due to its faint signal. The two Legions agree to proceed to Shin-kiba in order to preemptively deal with the Cave before it has the chance to grow. While on their way there, they meet with Kiito’s group, and Ui tells them of how many of the Irregular Huge they’ve encountered on their outing are identical to the ones they’ve fought during their Expedition to Ludvico Private Girls’ Academy, which were purposefully engineered by GEHENA. This leads Kiito to presume that the Cave currently faced by Legion Hronesnæsse is also a product of a GEHENA experiment.
First battle[edit | edit source]
As they speak, the two Legions are suddenly faced with a Gigant-class Huge, which was not detected by their Huge searchers. As they fight, the Lilies immediately notice the similarity of the Huge’s behavior to the horde faced by Haru at Fujimi bridge during the Odaiba Counteroffensive. Remembering the incredibly difficult decision she was forced to take in that battle, Haru is visibly unsettled, and hoping to redeem herself from her past mistakes, she sets off to fight the Huge on her own.
The two Legions leave in pursuit of Haru as she continues to relentlessly fight against the Huge. Kiito demands that the Saints retreat, remarking that the Gigant-class is theirs to defeat, but filled by rage, Haru unleashes her Divine Possession, an Aberration caused by the overdriven resonance of Magie between a Lily and her CHARM. Haru continues her rampage, with the other Saints members pleading with her to stop as she continues to pour all of her Magie into her attacks. Chinami attempts to offset Haru’s Magie consumption with her Charisma, but in doing so, she is hit by a stray attack from the Huge as Haru continues to push herself beyond her limits. Just as Haru's Divine Possession reaches its nine second limit, she is stopped by Hronesnæsse member Nagasawa Yuki.
As Haru returns to her senses, she expresses worry for Chinami due to the attack she received, however, Chinami realized that the Huge's attack did not cause her any physical injuries, but instead rendered her unable to use her abilities. Haru notices that her CHARM, the Caladbolg, has been damaged due to her pushing it beyond its limits during her rampage. Haru and Chinami retreat from the battlefield to consult with Tomoyo at the medical bay, while the remaining Saints members move to rejoin Hronesnæsse in their pursuit of the Huge.
Interlude[edit | edit source]
Tomoyo speaks with GEHENA, appearing excited that their experiments with the “Infestator” Irregular Gigant-class produced successful results, though also somberly reminding them that “failure will not be tolerated”. After finishing her call, she is approached by Haru and Chinami, and after being informed of the latter's conditions, Tomoyo presumes that she was attacked by a Huge capable of inducing a blockage in her Magie. Tomoyo advises Chinami to rest inside one of the medical bay's capsules so that the effect can wear off, and proposes that Haru join her while she works on restoring the Caladbolg in the meantime.
Meanwhile, Hronesnæsse and the Saints settle down after the previous battle. Kiito is furious that the Saints' mishandling of the situation allowed the Gigant-class Huge to escape, but in spite of this, Yuzuriha insists that the Saints join them in continuing their hunt for the Huge, in hopes that doing so would allow Haru to regain her peace of mind. Fujita Asagao points out how, while fighting the Gigant-class, their Magie was depleted much faster than usual, and Kozue West further adds that their movements were incredibly sluggish, remarking that her body felt unusually heavy while near the Huge. Yuzuriha confirms that the Gigant-class Huge they just fought was identical to the Gravity Manipulator Gigant they encountered during the Odaiba Counteroffensive.
The Saints recall Haru’s battle at Fujimi Bridge during the Counteroffensive, where Haru ultimately made the choice to destroy the bridge in order to prevent a horde of Huge from reaching the civilian evacuees. In doing so, she effectively trapped the civilians and junior high Lilies still in Ariake, Koto with the Huge horde, while simultaneously sealing their only means of escape. Though the Lilies of the two Legions believe Haru’s decision was justified, they point out how it still led her to be admonished by many. Azusa further recalls that Haru was particularly devastated for being unable to fulfill the vow she took with Sakumi before her death, promising her that she'd defend Odaiba as its finest Lily.
Kiito ultimately agrees with the Saints joining Hronesnæsse in hunting down the Gigant-class Huge. The Lilies conclude that GEHENA purposefully created the Cave in order to replicate the developments of the Odaiba Counteroffensive, and Asagao wonders why they’ve suddenly turned their attention to Odaiba. Ui points out that the experiments conducted on Ludvico left its territory in complete disarray, making it no longer a viable testing ground for them to use. They further conclude that in replicating the conditions of the Counteroffensive, GEHENA seeks to particularly target the Lilies who participated in it, possibly with the goal of severely crippling them in order to forcefully turn them into Boosted Lilies.
In order to counter the Gigant-class Huge’s gravity manipulation and Magie fatigue effects, the Lilies form a plan to perform the Neunwelt Tactic at very close range in order to make full use of the local Magie Intensity, which would be further facilitated by Tomoshibi’s Laplace. In agreement, the Two Legions then set out for battle, hoping to be rejoined by Haru while on their way. Meanwhile, Haru and Chinami are able to fully recover, however, due to the Caladbolg’s Crystal Core being damaged, Tomoyo offers Haru the Galateia, a CHARM that does not require a Contract, as a temporary replacement while she continues her repairs. Haru pleads with Tomoyo to discharge her, appearing eager to return to the battlefield, and Tomoyo ultimately agrees to let her go. As Haru leaves with Chinami, Tomoyo expresses an unusual interest in Haru’s high level abilities.
Second battle[edit | edit source]
Hronesnæsse and the Saints arrive at the Gigant-class’ location, where they’re soon joined by Haru and Chinami. With 14 Lilies present, the Two Legions promptly begin a joint Neunwelt Tactic, over the course of which, the Saints notice that Haru appears more absentminded than usual. Chinami joins Tomoshibi as the Lilies make their passes, using her Charisma in conjunction with Tomoshibi's Laplace in order to offset the effects of the Negative Magie for the most susceptible Lilies.
While on her turn with the Magisphere, Yuki reminisces of her past with the Funada Twins, reliving the incident the three of them experienced at their final year of elementary school, where, finding themselves surrounded by Huge, Yuki's poor judgment led her to leave the two Twins behind in hopes of reaching backup. This caused Kiito to suffer a severe head injury while fighting the Huge by herself, and though the Twins survived the encounter, the two of them grew to feverishly loathe Yuki for leaving them behind. Yuki recalls how, in her grief, it was the words of Kishimoto Maria Mirai that drove her to move past her pain and regret, allowing her to eventually reconcile with the Funada Twins. Having learned that Mirai herself had perished after being made into a Boosted Lily, Yuki vows to stand against the forces that claimed her dear friend's life.
The Legions' Neunwelt continues, and the Magisphere eventually makes its way to Haru. She receives her pass from Yukari, who was one of the junior high Lilies present in Ariake during the Counteroffensive, and recalling the words of reproval she received after she made the choice to destroy the bridge and trap the civilians in Ariake with the Huge, Haru begins to lose control of herself once more. Suddenly, she sees a vision of Sakumi, who assures her that she wasn’t wrong in her decision, and that she did all that she could. Wishing to prove to Sakumi and herself that her choice was justified, Haru returns to her senses and continues fighting, determined to end this battle by her own hands.
However, before she is able to make her pass, Haru is suddenly overtaken by a mysterious force, and begins mindlessly attacking while completely disregarding her surroundings. The other Saints members attempt to stop her as they plead with her to return to her senses, but Haru instead begins fighting her Legion mates, telling them that they cannot possibly understand the weight that she carries. Kiito eventually manages to retrieve the Magisphere from Haru, however, the other Lilies are unable to completely restrain her, and completely blinded by her emotions, Haru runs off by herself.
Concluding that Haru had succumbed to the effects of the Negative Magie, Kiito and Ui decide to pursue her, as their Lunatic Trancer makes them the most suitable to battle her due to it granting them a level of resistance against Negative Magie. The Twins entrust Asagao and Subaru with commanding the Neunwelt from thereafter, and Kiito has Tomoshibi promise that she will not allow any of the Lilies present to perish. After the Twins leave after Haru, the Hronesnæsse members realize how much more trusting of her teammates Kiito had become since their time together in junior high.
As their Neunwelt continues, Chinami continues to try her hardest to keep up with Tomoshibi, motivated to earn Haru’s approval once she returns. As she watches Chinami's earnest efforts, Yukari once again loses her spirits. In an attempt to encourage her, Nazuna acknowledges that Haru’s decision left them helpless during the Counteroffensive, but she argues that Haru might have not been so strongly admonished for her choice had they also fought their hardest back then, and that it is something they can do for her now.
Motivated, Nazuna unleashes her Rare Skill, Phantasm, as she goes on the offensive. However, she fails to foresee one of the Huge's attacks, and as she is about to be hit, Tomoshibi intervenes, using her own body to shield the first year from the blast, determined to keep her promise to Kiito that she’d keep all Lilies present safe. Though severely injured, Tomoshibi is able to survive the attack due to her increased endurance as Boosted Lily, but as her injuries are still debilitating, she retreats to the medical bay, noting that she has matters to discuss with Tomoyo.
At the same time, the Funada Twins continue to battle Haru, drawing her away from the Gravity Manipulator Gigant in order to abate the effects of its Negative Magie. Having completely lost her conscious mind, Haru once again unleashes her Divine Possession, and Ui surmises that GEHENA purposefully sought to recreate the conditions of the Odaiba Counteroffensive in order to force Haru to relive her trauma, meaning to observe the limits of their powers.
To the twins' surprise, Haru’s Divine Possession persists despite its nine second limit having expired, with the Negative Magie overtaking her only continuing to increase. Predicting that neither of them would be able to resist the Negative Magie any longer, the Funada Twins reluctantly realize that they will only be able to stop Haru by harming her to a degree where she cannot fight any longer. Kiito, however, is hesitant to use her blade to hurt another Lily, leaving Ui to continue battling the relentless Haru alone. Kiito soon realizes that the Galateia wielded by Haru is a Boosted CHARM, boasting a particularly abnormal Crystal Core. Presuming it to be the source of Haru’s instability, the Twins resume fighting together, this time focusing their attacks towards the Galateia's Core.
A still disheveled Tomoshibi reaches Tomoyo, and immediately questions the Instructor on her true intentions. Though Tomoyo is dismissive of her accusations, Tomoshibi reveals that during her time under GEHENA’s custody, she learned of the existence of “Singular Lilies”, the advanced stage of a Lily who possesses an Aberration. Both Haru and the Funada Twins are Singular Lilies, as the former is able to actively control the Divine Possession state for a total of nine seconds, while the latter two are able to produce the event known as the Empathy Phenomenon when activating their Lunatic Trancer in unison.
Tomoshibi presumes that as Singular Lilies, they are the true target of GEHENA’s experiment, which she surmises Tomoyo is complicit with. Tomoshibi demands that Tomoyo get her ready to return to the battlefield before finally falling unconscious due to her wounds. Holding the limp Tomoshibi in her arms, Tomoyo promises that she’ll “protect them from whoever may have planned this”, as she does not wish for any others to gain possession of them.
The two Legions’ continue performing their Neunwelt, but with Tomoshibi absent, the Lilies are now exhausted from the Magie fatigue caused by the Huge, and consequently, their Magisphere is not yet complete. Chinami is particularly saddened for failing to curb the effects of the Gravity Manipulator to the same extent that Tomoshibi did. With no other choice, the Lilies continue to make their passes while they wait for Kiito and Ui’s return, and at the same time, a mysterious, light rain begins to fall. As Asagao notices that the surrounding temperature has suddenly risen, the Huge surrounding the two Legions begin to self-destruct, with some directly attacking the others.
Eager to prove themselves, Nazuna and Chinami continue fighting despite their exhaustion, with Chinami repeatedly using her Charisma to revitalize Nazuna as she attacks. After Nazuna is disarmed by one of the Huge's attacks, Chinami moves in to shield her from an incoming projectile just as Tomoshibi did. Instead, however, Chinami's Magie suddenly blooms, and the Huge’s attack is completely deflected. The other Lilies notice that their Magie is being replenished due to Chinami’s power, and as Tomoshibi makes her return, she identifies it as Laplace, pointing out that being in the presence of her own Laplace facilitated Chinami’s Charisma to evolve.
With their Magie reserves revitalized, the Lilies set off to continue their Neunwelt at full strength. Subaru proposes that Yukari takes the finishing shot, as her skill as a sniper would allow her to take the shot from a safe enough distance for her not to be affected by the Gravity Manipulator. Yukari is unsure, however, and as Kawabata Hotaru points out that they will only have a single chance, Subaru urges Yukari to make a decision. With the other Lilies assuring her that they will respect her choice, Yukari ultimately agrees to take the finishing shot.
For the final time, the Lilies resume their Neunwelt, with Hronesnæsse making the passes while the Heorot Saints provide them with cover fire. As they fight, Yuzuriha points out that Subaru purposefully raised their strategy in order to push Yukari to grow. The Magisphere eventually makes it to Yukari, but as she takes aim, she begins to give in to her worries once again. Yukari begins to break down when she is approached by Sakumi’s spirit, who appears to use Phantasm in order to provide Yukari with a direct firing path towards the Gigant-class Huge. Sakumi's presence causes Yukari to regain her composure, and she takes the shot, successfully destroying the Gravity Manipulator Gigant.
As the Lilies congratulate Yukari for her successful shot, Yuzuriha points out how she felt as though Phantasm had been activated, and Yukari responds that it was, in fact, her sister’s, remarking that she was together with her when taking the shot. Yuzuriha recalls that while she never awakened to her Rare Skill in life, it was highly predicted that Sakumi would one day awaken to Phantasm. With the Gigant-class now destroyed, the Lilies retreat in order to recover, hoping for Kiito, Ui and Haru to return safely.
Final battle[edit | edit source]
Kiito and Ui continue their battle against Haru, with the rain pouring over them being much more intense, but though all three of them are significantly exhausted, they are yet to break out of their stalemate. Presuming that a particularly powerful blow would be required to destroy the Galateia’s Core, Ui proposes that Kiito use her iai technique while she holds Haru in place. Kiito is hesitant, as doing so would require Ui to fight Haru by herself, but Ui insists that they have no other choice.
Ui continues fighting Haru on her own, and as she watches her sister be overpowered by Haru's fierce attacks, Kiito attempts to reason with her, worrying that Ui might be killed if she fails to perform her iai correctly. Ui yet again demands that Kiito does as she says, assuring her sister that she would never leave her alone. Haru continues to have the upper hand against Ui, landing particularly severe blows on the older twin. Kiito is unable to shake off her worries for her sister’s safety, but as Ui once again insists that she go through with her plan, Kiito ultimately concedes, and begins to focus her Magie on the blade of her Hrunting.
Haru eventually completely disarms Ui, who is now barely able to protect herself from her swings. After landing multiple hits, Haru moves in for a lethal strike, but stops herself as she is met by Sakumi’s spirit. Realizing that their vow is the cause for her suffering, Sakumi pleads with Haru to stop. Sakumi's visage causes Haru to slowly regain her consciousness, and as she finally brings down her CHARM, Ui takes the opportunity to hold it in place for long enough for Kiito to finally destroy its Core.
With Haru subdued, Kiito holds the severely injured Ui in her arms, lamenting that she couldn’t protect her sister the same way that she is always protected by her. Ui, however disagrees, reminding Kiito of how, during their incident in elementary school, the very reason why Kiito had suffered her head injury was because she had risked herself to save her life. Held in her older twin's embrace, Kiito breaks down in tears.
Epilogue[edit | edit source]
Haru awakens the next day, once again in the companionship of Sakumi’s spirit. Sakumi asks that Haru stop tearing herself down over the vow they took, telling her that she had already become the splendid Lily she hoped she'd be. Haru does not understand, and Sakumi explains that becoming Odaiba’s finest Lily doesn’t mean a rank or position such as being Student Council President, but rather, to be a Lily who will always prioritize protecting the lives of everyday people, just as Haru had done. Sakumi tells Haru that she is her ideal Lily, and that it was thanks to her that she was able to live happily despite her terminal illness. Haru responds that she feels the same, as it was Sakumi who motivated her to become a Lily despite being held back by her asthma. Sakumi tells Haru that she is proud of both her and Yukari for the fine Lilies they’ve become.
Yukari enters the room, and tells Haru of how she felt that Sakumi was by her side in their battle yesterday, as it was thanks to her Phantasm that she was able to take the finishing shot and destroy the Gravity Manipulator. Sakumi’s spirit watches over the pair as they speak, and after telling Haru that she’ll always remain by their side, she finally fades away. Haru tells Yukari of how Sakumi was with them until a moment ago, passing on her message that she is proud of her sister. Finally, Haru tells Yukari that she’ll no longer hold onto her past, as she now understands that Sakumi will be with her as she fights.
The pair is met by the Saints members, and Yuzuriha tells them that Momiji and the others should be returning soon, as the Cave over Makuhari has been brought under control after the Gigant-class on the region was defeated. They’re joined by Kiito, Ui and Tomoshibi, and Haru soon notices the wounds Ui suffered in their previous battle. Haru offers her apologies, but Ui is unbothered, arguing that Haru is not to blame, as she was not in control of herself. Despite this, Kiito arrogantly demands that Yuzuriha show her gratitude for their rescue of Haru, and though begrudgingly, Yuzuriha offers Kiito her thanks.
As the Saints leave to welcome their remaining members home, Tomoshibi speaks with Tomoyo once again, inquiring her on the multiple abnormal phenomena that took place during Haru’s fight with the Funada Twins. She notes that they were similar to the “Emergence” phenomenon that takes place when a Huge Nest first materializes, and presumes that replicating that event was the goal of their experiment. Tomoyo still feigns ignorance to Tomoshibi's accusations, but after Tomoshibi leaves, Tomoyo expresses her relief that Haru, Kiito and Ui were able to return safely, as she finds them to be “precious individuals.”
Later, Hronesnæsse reunites, and after Yukari informs them of Haru’s condition, Kiito earnestly expresses her gratitude to Asagao and Subaru for following through with their duties, much to the Lilies' surprise. Kiito also thanks Tomoshibi for keeping her promise, and the latter is overjoyed at earning the recognition of her beloved. Yuki points out that while they emerged from the battle unscathed, they’re yet to learn the intentions of who engineered the situation in the first place. As they speak, the Cave alarm goes off, and reaffirming their pride as Lilies of Odaiba, Hronesnæsse sets off for battle once again.
